    Spondylolisthesis in an Etruscan Woman from Spina (Ferrara, Italy): an Iron Age Case Report

    Spondylolisthesis consists of the slippage of a vertebra in relation to the one beneath. It is caused by separation of the neural arch from the vertebral body (spondylolysis), and predominantly occurs at the isthmus (pars interarticularis). Originally thought to be a congenital anomaly, its strict correlation with certain activities that seem to exert stress on lower spine was later demonstrated. This paper describes a case of progression of spondylolysis to spondylolisthesis found on an adult female skeleton from the Etruscan necropolis of Spina (Ferrara, Italy). The case in question was identified among 209 skeletons exhumed at Spina. As spondylolisthesis is strictly connected with activities that exert stress on lower spine, the evidence suggests that this woman was engaged in stressful physical activity, perhaps related to the specific trade function of the site

    Although interpreting is an ancient communicative practice, presumably born together with the birth of language, the interpreting profession, and in particular conference interpreting, has a rather recent genesis. As a consequence, interpreter education and research on interpreting are also recent. The aim of this contribution is to present an overview of Interpreting Studies and of their different research paradigms and fields, focusing on conference interpreting. Therefore, far from being exhaustive, the present contribution aims at providing a concise account of the wealth of approaches, methodologies and research areas that have been thriving over the years. To this end, the following areas are presented together with some of the most representative publications: cognitive studies, studies on the interpreter\u2019s linguistic output, professional and didactic practices and, finally, interpreting and technology

    Hybridase activity of human ribonuclease-1 revealed by a real-time fluorometric assay

    Human ribonuclease-1 (hRNase-1) is an extracellular enzyme found in exocrine pancreas, blood, milk, saliva, urine and seminal plasma, which has been implicated in digestion of dietary RNA and in antiviral host defense. The enzyme is characterized by a high catalytic activity toward both single-stranded and double-stranded RNA. In this study, we explored the possibility that hRNase-1 may also be provided with a ribonuclease H activity, i.e. be able to digest the RNA component of RNA:DNA hybrids. For this purpose, we developed an accurate and sensitive real-time RNase H assay based on a fluorogenic substrate made of a 12 nt 5′-fluorescein-labeled RNA hybridized to a complementary 3′-quencher-modified DNA. Under physiological-like conditions, hRNase-1 was found to cleave the RNA:DNA hybrid very efficiently, as expressed by a k(cat)/K(m) of 330 000 M(−1) s(−1), a value that is over 180-fold higher than that obtained with the homologous bovine RNase A and only 8-fold lower than that measured with Escherichia coli RNase H. The kinetic characterization of hRNase-1 showed that its hybridase activity is maximal at neutral pH, increases with lowering ionic strength and is fully inhibited by the cytosolic RNase inhibitor. Overall, the reported data widen our knowledge of the enzymatic properties of hRNase-1 and provide new elements for the comprehension of its biological function

    Effect of cracks on the service life of RC structures exposed to chlorides

    To move towards a more sustainable concrete, the enhancement of its durability is strongly encouraged and, dealing in particular with reinforced concrete (RC), this mainly means to prevent the damage due to environmental actions, e.g. due to chloride-induced corrosion. Therefore, there is the need of models aimed at designing durable structures. Usually the service life design models consider concrete in uncracked condition. In real structures, however, several phenomena can generate cracks on concrete surface, leading to an acceleration of the corrosion of steel rebar. A number of studies have been recently carried out in order to evaluate the influence of cracks on reinforced concrete durability in chloride-contaminated environment, however the knowledge of the effect of cracks on the initiation and propagation periods is still lacking. Furthermore, few studies have considered additional protection strategies, such as the use of stainless steel rebar. In this work, experimental results are presented concerning the influence of cracks on the service life of reinforced concrete structures in order to evaluate if cracks lead to an earlier corrosion initiation induced by chlorides. Prismatic specimens, reinforced with carbon steel and 304L stainless steel bars, were longitudinally cracked and exposed to ponding with 3.5% NaCl solution.     [99mTc]Sestamibi SPECT can predict proliferation Index, angiogenesis, and vascular invasion in parathyroid patients: a retrospective study

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible association among sestamibi uptake and the main histopathological characteristics of parathyroid lesions related to aggressiveness such as the proliferation index (Ki67 expression and mitosis), angiogenesis (number of vessels), and vascular invasion in hyperparathyroidism patients. To this end, 26 patients affected by primary hyperparathyroidism subjected to both scintigraphy with [(99)mTc]Sestamibi and surgery/bioptic procedure were retrospectively enrolled. Hyperfunctioning of the parathyroid was detected in 19 patients. Our data showed a significant positive association among the sestamibi uptake and the proliferation index histologically evaluated both in terms of the number of Ki67 positive cells and mitosis. According to these data, lesions with a higher valuer of L/N (lesion to nonlesion ratio) frequently showed several vessels in tumor areas and histological evidence of vascular invasion. It is noteworthy that among patients with negative scintigraphy, 2 patients showed a neoplastic lesion after surgery (histological analysis). However, it is important to highlight that these lesions displayed very low proliferation indexes, which was evaluated in terms of number of both mitosis and Ki67-positive cells, some/rare vessels in the main lesion, and no evidence of vascular invasion. In conclusion, data obtained on patients with positive or negative scintigraphy support the hypothesis that sestamibi can be a tracer that is capable of predicting some biological characteristics of parathyroid tumors such as angiogenesis, proliferation indexes, and the invasion of surrounding tissues or vessels

    Association between elevated TGA-IgA titers and older age at diagnosis with absence of HBV seroconversion in celiac children

    Patients with celiac disease can have a low rate of protective hepatitis B (HBV) antibody titers after vaccination. We aimed to evaluate the HBV seroconversion in celiac disease (CD) children at the time of diagnosis as well as to identify the presence of possible predictive factors. Celiac disease children were prospectively enrolled and tested for antibodies against the S protein of HBV (HBsAg) at time of diagnosis between January 2009 and February 2020. Based on the serologic response to the vaccine, “responders” and “non-responders” were identified. Statistical analysis has been performed through R statistical software (3.5.1 version, R core Team) Of 96 CD children evaluated, 41.7% (n = 40) showed non-protective or absent antibody titers against HBV. Elevated IgA-antibodies against transglutaminase 2 (TGA-IgA) values and older age at diagnosis were associated with an absent seroconversion to HBV vaccine, while presenting symptoms were not significant. An elevated prevalence of absent seroconversion to HBV vaccine exists in this cohort of CD patients at the time of disease diagnosis. Elevated TGA-IgA titers and older age at diagnosis seem to negatively predict seroconversion. Further studies are needed to identify the real profile of “non-responders”, aiming to organize surveillance and eventual revaccination strategy
