Limits on the quiescent radio emission from the black hole binaries GRO J1655-40 and XTE J1550-564
We present the results of radio observations of the black hole binaries GRO
J1655-40 and XTE J1550-564 in quiescence, with the upgraded Australia Telescope
Compact Array. Neither system was detected. Radio flux density upper limits (3
sigma) of 26 micro Jy (at 5.5 GHz), 47 micro Jy (at 9 GHz) for GRO J1655-40,
and 1.4 mJy (at 1.75 GHz), 27 micro Jy (at 5.5 GHz), 47 micro Jy (at 9 GHz) for
XTE J1550-564 were measured. In conjunction with quasi-simultaneous Chandra
X-ray observations (in the case of GRO J1655-40) and Faulkes Telescope optical
observations (XTE J1550-564) we find that these systems provide the first
evidence of relatively `radio quiet' black hole binaries at low luminosities;
indicating that the scatter observed in the hard state X-ray:radio correlation
at higher luminosities may also extend towards quiescent levels.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA
Strongly residual coordinates over A[x]
For a domain A of characteristic zero, a polynomial f over A[x] is called a
strongly residual coordinate if f becomes a coordinate (over A) upon going
modulo x, and f becomes a coordinate upon inverting x. We study the question of
when a strongly residual coordinate is a coordinate, a question closely related
to the Dolgachev-Weisfeiler conjecture. It is known that all strongly residual
coordinates are coordinates for n=2 . We show that a large class of strongly
residual coordinates that are generated by elementaries upon inverting x are in
fact coordinates for arbitrary n, with a stronger result in the n=3 case. As an
application, we show that all Venereau-type polynomials are 1-stable
coordinates.Comment: 15 pages. Some minor clarifications and notational improvements from

A long-term optical - X-ray correlation in 4U 1957+11
[abridged] Three years of optical monitoring of the low-mass X-ray binary
(LMXB) 4U 1957+11 is presented. The source was observed in V, R and i-bands
using the Faulkes Telescopes North and South. The light curve is dominated by
long-term variations which are correlated (at the > 3 sigma level) with the
RXTE ASM soft X-ray flux. The variations span one magnitude in all three
filters. We find no evidence for periodicities in our light curves, contrary to
a previous short-timescale optical study in which the flux varied on a 9.3-hour
sinusoidal period by a smaller amplitude. The optical spectral energy
distribution is blue and typical of LMXBs in outburst, as is the power law
index of the correlation beta = 0.5, where F_{nu,OPT} propto F_X^beta. The
discrete cross-correlation function reveals a peak at an X-ray lag of 2 - 14
days, which could be the viscous timescale. However, adopting the least squares
method the strongest correlation is at a lag of 0 +/- 4 days, consistent with
X-ray reprocessing on the surface of the disc. We therefore constrain the
optical lag behind X-ray to be between -14 and +4 days. In addition, we use the
optical - X-ray luminosity diagram for LMXBs as a diagnostic tool to constrain
the nature of the compact object in 4U 1957+11, since black hole (BH) and
neutron star (NS) sources reside in different regions of this diagram. If the
system contains a BH (as is the currently favoured hypothesis), its distance
must exceed ~ 20 kpc for the optical and X-ray luminosities to be consistent
with other soft state BH systems. For distances < 20 kpc, the data lie in a
region of the diagram populated only by NS sources. 4U 1957+11 is unique: it is
either the only BH LMXB to exist in an apparent persistent soft state, or it is
a NS LMXB which behaves like a black hole.Comment: MNRAS accepted, 12 pages, 8 figure
Fluid/solid transition in a hard-core system
We prove that a system of particles in the plane, interacting only with a
certain hard-core constraint, undergoes a fluid/solid phase transition
Extracellular Vesicles Secreted in Response to Cytokine Exposure Increase Mitochondrial Oxygen Consumption in Recipient Cells
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are small, membrane-bound nanoparticles released from most, if not all cells, and can carry functionally active cargo (proteins, nucleic acids) which can be taken up by neighboring cells and mediate physiologically relevant effects. In this capacity, EVs are being regarded as novel cell-to-cell communicators, which may play important roles in the progression of neurodegenerative diseases, like Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Aside from the canonical physical hallmarks of this disease [amyloid β (Aβ) plaques, neurofibrillary tangles, and widespread cell death], AD is characterized by chronic neuroinflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction. In the current study, we sought to better understand the role of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), known to be involved in inflammation, in mediating alterations in mitochondrial function and EV secretion. Using an immortalized hippocampal cell line, we observed significant reductions in several parameters of mitochondrial oxygen consumption after a 24-h exposure period to TNF-α. In addition, after TNF-α exposure we also observed significant upregulation of two microRNAs (miRNAs; miR-34a and miR-146a) associated with mitochondrial dysfunction in secreted EVs. Despite this, when naïve cells are exposed to EVs isolated from TNF-α treated cells, mitochondrial respiration, proton leak, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production are all significantly increased. Collectively these data indicate that a potent proinflammatory cytokine, TNF-α, induces significant mitochondrial dysfunction in a neuronal cell type, in part via the secretion of EVs, which significantly alter mitochondrial activity in recipient cells
Measurement resources for dissemination and implementation research in health
BACKGROUND: A 2-day consensus working meeting, hosted by the United States National Institutes of Health and the Veterans Administration, focused on issues related to dissemination and implementation (D&I) research in measurement and reporting. Meeting participants included 23 researchers, practitioners, and decision makers from the USA and Canada who concluded that the field would greatly benefit from measurement resources to enhance the ease, harmonization, and rigor of D&I evaluation efforts. This paper describes the findings from an environmental scan and literature review of resources for D&I measures. FINDINGS: We identified a total of 17 resources, including four web-based repositories and 12 static reviews or tools that attempted to synthesize and evaluate existing measures for D&I research. Thirteen resources came from the health discipline, and 11 were populated from database reviews. Ten focused on quantitative measures, and all were generated as a resource for researchers. Fourteen were organized according to an established D&I theory or framework, with the number of constructs and measures ranging from 1 to more than 450. Measure metadata was quite variable with only six providing information on the psychometric properties of measures. CONCLUSIONS: Additional guidance on the development and use of measures are needed. A number of approaches, resources, and critical areas for future work are discussed. Researchers and stakeholders are encouraged to take advantage of a number of funding mechanisms supporting this type of work. Against the Compositional View of Facts
It is commonly assumed that facts would be complex entities made out of particulars and universals. This thesis, which I call Compositionalism, holds that parthood may be construed broadly enough so that the relation that holds between a fact and the entities it ‘ties’ together counts as a kind of parthood. I argue firstly that Compositionalism is incompatible with the possibility of certain kinds of fact and universal, and, secondly, that such facts and universals are possible. I conclude that Compositionalism is false. What all these kinds of fact and universal have in common is a violation of supplementation principles governing any relation that may be intelligibly regarded as a kind of parthood. Although my arguments apply to Compositionalism generally, I focus on recent work by David Armstrong, who is a prominent and explicit Compositionalist
Highly Stereoselective Biocatalytic Synthesis of Key Cyclopropane Intermediate to Ticagrelor
Extending the scope of biocatalysis to important non-natural reactions such as olefin cyclopropanation will open new opportunities for replacing multistep chemical syntheses of pharmaceutical intermediates with efficient, clean, and highly selective enzyme-catalyzed processes. In this work, we engineered the truncated globin of Bacillus subtilis for the synthesis of a cyclopropane precursor to the antithrombotic agent ticagrelor. The engineered enzyme catalyzes the cyclopropanation of 3,4-difluorostyrene with ethyl diazoacetate on a preparative scale to give ethyl-(1R, 2R)-2-(3,4-difluorophenyl)-cyclopropanecarboxylate in 79% yield, with very high diastereoselectivity (>99% dr) and enantioselectivity (98% ee), enabling a single-step biocatalytic route to this pharmaceutical intermediate
