Is HIV-1 RNA dimerization a prerequisite for packaging? Yes, no, probably?
During virus assembly, all retroviruses specifically encapsidate two copies of full-length viral genomic RNA in the form of a non-covalently linked RNA dimer. The absolute conservation of this unique genome structure within the Retroviridae family is strong evidence that a dimerized genome is of critical importance to the viral life cycle. An obvious hypothesis is that retroviruses have evolved to preferentially package two copies of genomic RNA, and that dimerization ensures the proper packaging specificity for such a genome. However, this implies that dimerization must be a prerequisite for genome encapsidation, a notion that has been debated for many years. In this article, we review retroviral RNA dimerization and packaging, highlighting the research that has attempted to dissect the intricate relationship between these two processes in the context of HIV-1, and discuss the therapeutic potential of these putative antiretroviral targets

Impact of Ranch and Market Factors on an Index of Agricultural Holding Period Returns
This study develops nominal and real holding period return indices for operating ranches. The indices contain two components, monthly ranch operating profit and capital appreciation. A regression model that determines the effect of various attributes on total market value is used to estimate capital appreciation, and a second model determines operating profit. The two different ranch data series are compared with United States Long Term Government Bonds, the S&P 500 Index and Small Capitalization Stocks. Both ranch indices show very low correlation with the S&P 500 Index and very low or negative betas. Further, both ranch series have excess actual nominal and real returns when compared to expected returns determined from the Capital Asset Pricing Model.

Advanced propfans were selected to be used throughout the family of commuters. These propulsion systems offer a 25 to 28 percent fuel savings over comparably sized turbofans operating in the 1990s. A brief study of the propulsion systems available for the family of commuters is provided and the selection of the advanced turboprops justified. The propeller and engine designs and performance are discussed. The integration of these designs are examined. Also addressed is the noise considerations and constraints due to propfan installation
Bimodal Fusion in Audio-Visual Speech Recognition
Extending automatic speech recognition (ASR) to the visual modality has been shown to greatly increase recognition accuracy and improve system robustness over purely acoustic systems. especially in acoustically hostile environments. An important aspect of designing such systems is how to incorporate the visual component Into the acoustic speech recognizer to achieve optimal performance. In this paper, we investigate methods of Integrating the audio and visual modalities within HMM-based classification models. We examine existing integration schemes and propose the use of a coupled hidden Markov model (CHMM) to exploit audio-visual interaction. Our experimental results demonstrate that the CHMM consistently outperforms other integration models for a large range of acoustic noise levels and suggest that it better captures temporal correlations between the two streams of information

Crystallographic phase changes and damage thresholds of CsPbI3 microwire waveguides through continuous wave photoablation
We investigate waveguide efficiency of CsPbI3 microwire waveguides and their photodegradation over a range of continuous wave laser excitation energies and intensities. Under modest laser input intensities <1 kW cm−2 we observe a wavelength dependent efficiency of light propagation in the waveguides. At increased power densities and wavelengths of 473 nm or shorter, microwires undergo photoablation into discrete fragments. Use of diffraction-limited excitation allowed localised cleavage of the microwires with observation of transient photoluminescence from degradation products. TEM analysis of the microwires revealed transformation from the yellow δ-phase to amorphous phases in the region of the photodamage with a degraded morphology consistent with efficient thermal transfer and induced melting
