Experience Gleaned
This summer while many Iowa State women continue their studies in the speeded up educational program, others will seek another means to accelerate their education. They will be employed in home economics positions to discover whether they have chosen a field interesting to them, to obtain experience in that field and to earn money
Purple-Nozzled Yogurt Slingers and Cracks of Heaven: Genital Humour on UrbanDictionary.com
The internet offers possibilities to form communities and share a sense of humour that might not be acceptable in other spheres of public discourse. The internet also provides possibilities to develop and subvert text genres, such as dictionaries. There are serious slang dictionaries, but UrbanDictionary.com lies where humour and subversion meet. This article explores how the genre conventions of dictionaries are used and expanded to create a subversion of lexicographical standards and how these instances of subversion may result in humorous content. Also, the semantic properties of the entries, namely those based on metaphors, will be analysed with respect to how far these play a role in creating the specific genital humour UrbanDictionary.com is known for. For this, theories of metaphoric humour will be expanded to see how unexpected mapping processes result in incongruity and configurational humour.

Visual Discrimination Of Letters In The Alphabet By Young Children: A Rasch Measurement Analysis
Data on 30 items for upper case letters and 36 items for lower case letters, where each item was scored in one of two categories (wrong scored zero and correct scored one), were Rasch analysed to create two linear scales . The student sample was N=324 pre-primary and primary students (aged 5 to 9 years) in Perth, Western Australia. Twelve of the initial 30 items of Visual Discrimination of Upper Case Letters were deleted due to item misfit statistics leaving 18 items and five of the original 36 items for Visual Discrimination of Lower Case Letters were deleted leaving 31 items. The 18 item-scale and the 31 item-scale each had a good fit to the measurement model, were reliable (Person Separation Indices of 0.55 and 0.82 and Cronbach Alphas of 0.70 and 0.82), and were unidimensional, showing no statistically significant interaction on item difficulties along the scale. Items were ordered from easy to hard and student measures from low to high on the same scale, allowing the objective identification of alphabet letters that students found difficult to discriminate. Students who had poor visual discrimination skills of alphabet letters could also be identified objectively
The framing and fashioning of therapeutic citizenship among people living with HIV taking Antiretroviral Therapy in Uganda
In this article, we examine how people living with HIV (PLWH) were able to reconceptualize or “reframe” their understanding of HIV and enhance their capacity to self-manage the condition. Two in-depth interviews were held with 38 PLWH (20 women, 18 men) selected from three government and nongovernment antiretroviral therapy (ART) delivery sites in Wakiso District, and the narratives analyzed. ART providers played an important role in shaping participants’ HIV self-management processes. Health workers helped PLWH realize that they could control their condition, provided useful concepts and language for emotional coping, and gave advice about practical self-management tasks, although this could not always be put into practice. ART providers in this setting were spaces for the development of a collective identity and a particular form of therapeutic citizenship that encouraged self-management, including adherence to ART. Positive framing institutions are important for many PLWH in resource-limited settings and the success of ART programs
One Size Fits All? Reflecting on Local Program Planning Processes Among Three Iterations of the “Clemente” Program
This paper reports on the first stage of an ongoing research project: how three Canadian adult education programs, which share the common mission of providing access to the study of the liberal arts for non-traditional adult learners, have evolved over the past few years. We consider both the commonalities and variances across the programs to understand how each iteration’s socio-political context has informed their interpretation of the common mission
DEER data analysis software : a comparative guide
We acknowledge financial support from EPSRC (studentship to HR EP/R513337/1 and The Royal Society (URF to JEL UR150698F). The UKRI block grant to St Andrews supported the journal charges for open access.Pulsed Dipolar Spectroscopy (PDS) Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) experiments are popular techniques to measure dipolar coupling and therefore nanometre-scale distances and distance distributions between paramagnetic centres. The most common experiment is Double Electron Electron Resonance (DEER, also known as PELDOR), which is a well-tested and documented experiment. Until recently there were few methods to analyze data, however this has changed of late. The current plethora of DEER analysis packages may appear overwhelming to a new practitioner of DEER. In this work, six of the most popular packages are reviewed. This includes a brief guide for getting started with the environments, and qualitative testing and comparison of each using both simulated and experimental DEER data.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Meeting the need for regenerative therapies I: Target-based incidence and its relationship to U.S spending, productivity, and innovation
Regenerative therapies possess high theoretical potential for medical advance yet their success as commercial therapeutics is still open to debate. Appropriate data on target opportunities that provide perspective and enable strategic decision making is necessary for both efficient and effective translation. Up until now, this data have been out of reach to research scientists and many start-up companies—the very groups currently looked to for the critical advance of these therapies. The target-based estimate of opportunity presented in this report demonstrates its importance in evaluating medical need and technology feasibility. In addition, analysis of U.S. research spending, productivity, and innovation reveals that U.S. basic research in this field would benefit from greater interdisciplinarity. Overcoming the barriers that currently prevent translation into high value therapies that are quickly clinically adopted requires simultaneous integration of engineering, science, business, and clinical practice. Achieving this integration is nontrivial
