Controlled Ecological Life Support System. Design, Development, and Use of a Ground-Based Plant Growth Module

    Get PDF
Problems of food production by higher plants are addressed. Experimentation requirements and necessary equipment for designing an experimental Controlled Ecological Life Support System (CELSS) Plant Growth Module are defined. A framework is provided for the design of laboratory sized plant growth chambers. The rationale for the development of an informal collaborative effort between investigators from universities and industry and those at Ames is evaluated. Specific research problems appropriate for collaborative efforts are identified

Discussion of Factors Controlling Army Helicopter Reliability

The Army\u27s interest in significant aviation improvements actually started, or at least gained steam, in the 1960\u27s during the extended combat we had in southeast Asia where a lot of problems in the utilization of the rotary wing aircraft came to a head, and I\u27ll talk about those in more detail. What I would like to do is go through how the Army has responded to those problems that were revealed, through R&D and even more specifically in the diagnostics area. When I say diagnostics, what I\u27m talking about is the second category of NDI that I see, the first category being the one I think that most people here have a prime interest in and that is the one time, static inspection during manufacture, a verification of quality control. The other type is the repetitive in-service inspection

This symposium was held at the NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, California, July 24-27, 1990. The NASA exobiology investigators reported their recent research findings. Scientific papers were presented in the following areas: cosmic evolution of biogenic compounds, prebiotic evolution (planetary and molecular), early evolution of life (biological and geochemical), evolution of advanced life, solar system exploration, and the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI)

X-radiographic, liquid penetrant, ultrasonic, eddy current and magnetic particle testing techniques were optimized and applied to the evaluation of 4340 steel (180 KSI-UTS) and 6Al-4V titanium (STA) alloy specimens. Sixty steel specimens containing a total of 176 fatigue cracks and 60 titanium specimens containing a total of 135 fatigue cracks were evaluated. The cracks ranged in length from .043 cm (0.017 inch) to 1.02 cm (.400 inch) and in depth from .005 cm (.002 inch) to .239 cm (.094 inch) for steel specimens. Lengths ranged from .048 cm (0.019 inch) to 1.03 cm (.407 inch) and depths from 0.010 cm (.004 inch) to .261 cm (0.103 inch) for titanium specimens. Specimen thicknesses were nominally .152 cm (0.060 inch) and 0.635 cm (0.250 inch) and surface finishes were nominally 125 rms. Specimens were evaluated in the "as machined" surface condition, after etch surface and after proof loading in a randomized inspection sequence
