Theoretical study of small signal modulation behavior of Fabry-Perot Germanium-on-Silicon lasers

This work investigated the small signal performance of Fabry-Perot Ge-on-Si lasers by modeling and simulations. The 3dB bandwidth dependence on the structure parameters such as poly-Si cladding thickness, Ge cavity width and thickness, and minority carrier lifetime were studied. A 3dB bandwidth of 33.94 GHz at a biasing current of 270.5 mA is predicted after Ge laser structure optimization with a defect limited carrier lifetime of 1 ns

A Nonaqueous Approach to the Preparation of Iron Phosphide Nanowires

Previous preparation of iron phosphide nanowires usually employed toxic and unstable iron carbonyl compounds as precursor. In this study, we demonstrate that iron phosphide nanowires can be synthesized via a facile nonaqueous chemical route that utilizes a commonly available iron precursor, iron (III) acetylacetonate. In the synthesis, trioctylphosphine (TOP) and trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) have been used as surfactants, and oleylamine has been used as solvent. The crystalline structure and morphology of the as-synthesized products were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The obtained iron phosphide nanowires have a typical width of ~16 nm and a length of several hundred nanometers. Structural and compositional characterization reveals a hexagonal Fe2P crystalline phase. The morphology of as-synthesized products is greatly influenced by the ratio of TOP/TOPO. The presence of TOPO has been found to be essential for the growth of high-quality iron phosphide nanowires. Magnetic measurements reveal ferromagnetic characteristics, and hysteresis behaviors below the blocking temperature have been observed

The natural chemical, erythritol is a C4 polyol approved by FDA for use as a sweetener. Here we examined a potential role for erythritol in the control of postprandial blood glucose levels in DM. An anti-postprandial hyperglycemia effect upon erythritol administration (500 mg kg-1) was demonstrated in alloxan-induced DM model mice by monitoring changes in blood glucose after intragastric administration of drugs and starch. We also found that erythritol most likely exerts its anti-postprandial hyperglycemic activities by inhibiting α-glucosidase in a competitive manner. This was supported by enzyme activity assays and molecular modelling experiments. In the latter experiments it was possible to successful dock erythritol into the catalytic pocket of α-glucosidase, with the resultant interaction likely to be driven by electrostatic interactions involving Asp 215, Asp69 and Arg446 residues. This study suggests that erythritol may not only serve as a glucose substitute but may also be a useful agent in the treatment of diabetes mellitus to help manage postprandial blood glucose levels.PostprintPeer reviewe

Electrochromics for energy efficient buildings : Towards long-term durability and materials rejuvenation

    No full text
Electrochromic devices such as "smart windows" for energy efficient windows must be durable enough for many years of practical use. Typical devices employ films based on W oxide and Ni oxide, and this paper surveys recent progress on durability-related issues for these materials. In the case of W oxide, we discuss the beneficial effects of Ti addition, and we describe recent and unexpected progress concerning galvanostatic rejuvenation of aged W oxide films. For Ni oxide, we report how charge exchange declination during extended voltammetric cycling can be modeled in terms of a power law

Grinding is an important link in the process of mineral processing. It plays a vital role in mineral processing by optimizing the grinding process, improving the quality of grinding products and ensuring the follow-up operation indicators. In this paper, the Python language, intelligent theoretical control technology and mineral processing were combined to solve the problem of ore feeding control in mineral processing. Using error factor analysis, an extended control algorithm was designed. The NumPy library and data collected from the Yuan YangMou concentrator in China were used to quantitatively analyze the factors affecting the error of electronic belt scales. This paper introduces the use of Kalman filtering for electronic belt scale weight data to reduce the effect of noise and hence reduce errors. The factors affecting the process of mill feeding are also analyzed. The core ideas and methods of fuzzy control theory are summarized, and a Python-based fuzzy controller suitable for the mill feeding process that improves the overall robustness and accuracy of feeding system is implemented

Friction and wear behaviors of reduced graphene oxide- and carbon nanotube-reinforced hydroxyapatite bioceramics

Friction and wear properties play an important role in the long-term in vivo performance of load-bearing bioceramic implants. In this study, the friction and wear behaviors of hydroxyapatite (HA) reinforced with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and rGO + carbon nanotube (CNT) hybrids were studied by ball-on-disk tests to understand the effects of nanocarbon content and morphology on the composites’ tribological behaviors. The intact and worn surfaces were characterized by optical microscopy, nanoindentation, field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. We found that the incorporation of rGO and rGO + CNT hybrids in HA bioceramic both improved the friction and wear behaviors, and the highest wear resistance was achieved by employing 1 wt% rGO and 1 wt% CNT as reinforcements. The major reinforcing mechanism was the formation of carbonaceous films between the composite surfaces and counterbody, which served as solid lubrication films that resulted in a lower coefficient of friction, higher hardness, and increased hardness/modulus ratio. Importantly, CNT addition facilitated the uniform distribution of the reinforcements in the HA matrix and the pinning effects of CNT enhanced the connection between rGO and HA.Ministry of Education (MOE)Nanyang Technological UniversityPublished versionThis work was supported by Nanyang Technological University Singapore (Grant No. M4080160) and Ministry of Education, Singapore (AcRF Tier 1 Grant RG141/17)
