    An Improved Optimal Slip Ratio Prediction considering Tyre Inflation Pressure Changes

    The prediction of optimal slip ratio is crucial to vehicle control systems. Many studies have verified there is a definitive impact of tyre pressure change on the optimal slip ratio. However, the existing method of optimal slip ratio prediction has not taken into account the influence of tyre pressure changes. By introducing a second-order factor, an improved optimal slip ratio prediction considering tyre inflation pressure is proposed in this paper. In order to verify and evaluate the performance of the improved prediction, a cosimulation platform is developed by using MATLAB/Simulink and CarSim software packages, achieving a comprehensive simulation study of vehicle braking performance cooperated with an ABS controller. The simulation results show that the braking distances and braking time under different tyre pressures and initial braking speeds are effectively shortened with the improved prediction of optimal slip ratio. When the tyre pressure is slightly lower than the nominal pressure, the difference of braking performances between original optimal slip ratio and improved optimal slip ratio is the most obvious

In this paper, we use the approach of Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to determine which SCM software best meets the needs of a company.     Gear wear process monitoring using a sideband estimator based on modulation signal bispectrum

    As one of the most common gear failure modes, tooth wear can produce nonlinear modulation sidebands in the vibration frequency spectrum. However, limited research has been reported in monitoring the gear wear based on vibration due to the lack of tools which can effectively extract the small sidebands. In order to accurately monitor gear wear progression in a timely fashion, this paper presents a gear wear condition monitoring approach based on vibration signal analysis using the modulation signal bispectrum-based sideband estimator (MSB-SE) method. The vibration signals are collected using a run-to-failure test of gearbox under an accelerated test process. MSB analysis was performed on the vibration signals to extract the sideband information. Using a combination of the peak value of MSB-SE and the coherence of MSB-SE, the overall information of gear transmission system can be obtained. Based on the amplitude of MSB-SE peaks, a dimensionless indicator is proposed to assess the effects of gear tooth wear. The results demonstrated that the proposed indicator can be used to accurately and reliably monitor gear tooth wear and evaluate the wear severity

    A Dynamic Deformation based Lubrication Model between the Piston Rings and Cylinder Liner

    The piston ring-cylinder liner friction pair is one of the most important friction pair in IC engines. In previous modelling studies, most researches were carried out based on a hypothesis that the inner surface of liner is an ideal cylindrical shell without considering the effects of dynamic deformation on oil film distribution. To investigate the potential influences of structural deformations on tribological behaviors of cylinder assemblies, the dynamic deformation of liner surface was obtained by FEM-based dynamic simulation, and then introduced into the lubrication model. Different from the traditional lubrication model where the pressure stress factor and shear stress factor are regarded as constant, this paper calculated these factors in real time by numerical integration to achieve more realistic simulation results. This study shows that the friction force obtained from the improved model manifests obvious fluctuations, and shows a significant reduction compared to original model

    Exploring wettability difference-driven wetting by utilizing electrospun chimeric Janus microfiber comprising cellulose acetate and polyvinylpyrrolidone

    In exploring the difference in the wettability of fibers with various structures, three inner constructions of fibers, namely, uniaxial, Janus and chimeric Janus, have been fabricated by electrospinning. In electrospun fibers, polyvinyl pyrrolidone and cellulose acetate were used as a polymer matrix and ketoprofen was used as a model drug. Morphologies and inner structures were respectively investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Physical states and compatibilities of materials were detected by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Water contact angle (WCA) tests were conducted to determine the difference between wettability and wetting time among assorted fiber membranes. Results showed that the wettability gradient could drive water movement and wetting, which resulted in the rapid decrease of the WCA, to prepare Janus and chimeric Janus fiber membranes compared with uniaxial fiber membranes. Otherwise, in vitro drug release experiments were carried out and four fitting models were applied in matching release profiles. The results showed that electrospun fiber membranes belonged to sustained-release systems and such membranes were influenced by drug diffusion and backbone corrosion effects.     Dopamine Transporters in Striatum Correlate with Deactivation in the Default Mode Network during Visuospatial Attention

    BACKGROUND:Dopamine and dopamine transporters (DAT, which regulate extracellular dopamine in the brain) are implicated in the modulation of attention but their specific roles are not well understood. Here we hypothesized that dopamine modulates attention by facilitation of brain deactivation in the default mode network (DMN). Thus, higher striatal DAT levels, which would result in an enhanced clearance of dopamine and hence weaker dopamine signals, would be associated to lower deactivation in the DMN during an attention task. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS:For this purpose we assessed the relationship between DAT in striatum (measured with positron emission tomography and [(11)C]cocaine used as DAT radiotracer) and brain activation and deactivation during a parametric visual attention task (measured with blood oxygenation level dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging) in healthy controls. We show that DAT availability in caudate and putamen had a negative correlation with deactivation in ventral parietal regions of the DMN (precuneus, BA 7) and a positive correlation with deactivation in a small region in the ventral anterior cingulate gyrus (BA 24/32). With increasing attentional load, DAT in caudate showed a negative correlation with load-related deactivation increases in precuneus. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE:These findings provide evidence that dopamine transporters modulate neural activity in the DMN and anterior cingulate gyrus during visuospatial attention. Our findings suggest that dopamine modulates attention in part by regulating neuronal activity in posterior parietal cortex including precuneus (region involved in alertness) and cingulate gyrus (region deactivated in proportion to emotional interference). These findings suggest that the beneficial effects of stimulant medications (increase dopamine by blocking DAT) in inattention reflect in part their ability to facilitate the deactivation of the DMN

    Age- and time-of-day dependence of glymphatic function in the human brain measured via two diffusion MRI methods

    Advanced age, accompanied by impaired glymphatic function, is a key risk factor for many neurodegenerative diseases. To study age-related differences in the human glymphatic system, we measured the influx and efflux activities of the glymphatic system via two non-invasive diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) methods, ultra-long echo time and low-b diffusion tensor imaging (DTIlow–b) measuring the subarachnoid space (SAS) flow along the middle cerebral artery and DTI analysis along the perivascular space (DTI-ALPS) along medullary veins in 22 healthy volunteers (aged 21–75 years). We first evaluated the circadian rhythm dependence of the glymphatic activity by repeating the MRI measurements at five time points from 8:00 to 23:00 and found no time-of-day dependence in the awake state under the current sensitivity of MRI measurements. Further test–retest analysis demonstrated high repeatability of both diffusion MRI measurements, suggesting their reliability. Additionally, the influx rate of the glymphatic system was significantly higher in participants aged >45 years than in participants aged 21–38, while the efflux rate was significantly lower in those aged >45 years. The mismatched influx and efflux activities in the glymphatic system might be due to age-related changes in arterial pulsation and aquaporin-4 polarization

    Association of Body Mass and Brain Activation during Gastric Distention: Implications for Obesity

    BACKGROUND:Gastric distention (GD), as it occurs during meal ingestion, signals a full stomach and it is one of the key mechanisms controlling food intake. Previous studies on GD showed lower activation of the amygdala for subjects with higher body mass index (BMI). Since obese subjects have dopaminergic deficits that correlate negatively with BMI and the amygdala is innervated by dopamine neurons, we hypothesized that BMI would correlate negatively with activation not just in the amygdala but also in other dopaminergic brain regions (midbrain and hypothalamus). METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS:We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to evaluate brain activation during GD in 24 healthy subjects with BMI range of 20-39 kg/m(2). Using multiple regression and cross-correlation analyses based on a family-wise error corrected threshold P = 0.05, we show that during slow GD to maximum volumes of 500 ml and 700 ml subjects with increased BMI had increased activation in cerebellum and left posterior insula, and decreased activation of dopaminergic (amygdala, midbrain, hypothalamus, thalamus) and serotonergic (pons) brain regions and anterior insula, regions that were functionally interconnected with one another. CONCLUSIONS:The negative correlation between BMI and BOLD responses to gastric distention in dopaminergic (midbrain, hypothalamus, amygdala, thalamus) and serotonergic (pons) brain regions is consistent with disruption of dopaminergic and serotonergic signaling in obesity. In contrast the positive correlation between BMI and BOLD responses in posterior insula and cerebellum suggests an opposing mechanism that promotes food intake in obese subjects that may underlie their ability to consume at once large food volumes despite increasing gastric distention

    Gear wear monitoring by modulation signal bispectrum based on motor current signal analysis

    Gears are important mechanical components for power transmissions. Tooth wear is one of the most common failure modes, which can present throughout a gear’s lifetime. It is significant to accurately monitor gear wear progression in order to take timely predictive maintenances. Motor current signature analysis (MCSA) is an effective and non-intrusive approach which is able to monitor faults from both electrical and mechanical systems. However, little research has been reported in monitoring the gear wear and estimating its severity based on MCSA. This paper presents a novel gear wear monitoring method through a modulation signal bispectrum based motor current signal analysis (MSB-MCSA). For a steady gear transmission, it is inevitable to exist load and speed oscillations due to various errors including wears. These oscillations can induce small modulations in the current signals of the driving motor. MSB is particularly effective in characterising such small modulation signals. Based on these understandings, the monitoring process was implemented based on the current signals from a run-to-failure test of an industrial two stages helical gearbox under a moderate accelerated fatigue process. At the initial operation of the test, MSB analysis results showed that the peak values at the bifrequencies of gear rotations and the power supply can be effective monitoring features for identifying faulty gears and wear severity as they exhibit agreeable changes with gear loads. A monotonically increasing trend established by these features allows a clear indication of the gear wear progression. The dismantle inspection at 477 hours of operation, made when one of the monitored features is about 123% higher than its baseline, has found that there are severe scuffing wear marks on a number of tooth surfaces on the driving gear, showing that the gear endures a gradual wear process during its long test operation. Therefore, it is affirmed that the MSB-MSCA approach proposed is reliable and accurate for monitoring gear wear deterioration
