The effect of kinesiology tape on knee proprioception in healthy subjects
Kinesiology tape can improve athletic performance; however, due to cutaneous stimulation its application can have an influence on proprioception.
Objectives
To determine the effects of kinesiology tape on knee proprioception applied to quadriceps, namely in the joint position sense (JPS) and in the threshold to detect passive movement (TTDPM), both immediately after and 24 h after its application.
Methods
Thirty young healthy participants were randomly divided into experimental and control group. In the experimental group, a kinesiology tape on the quadriceps muscle was applied. The JPS and the TTDPM of the knee was assessed before, immediately after and 24 h after the kinesiology tape intervention.
Results
No significant differences were found in the assessment made before intervention. The Friedman Test showed that kinesiology tape had no influence on JPS in either group over time (p > 0.05). However, the TTDPM decreased significantly immediately after and 24 h after its application (p < 0.05).info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the Portuguese version of the Knee Outcome Survey-Activities of Daily Living Scale (KOS-ADLS)
Abstract The objective of this study was to cross-culturally adapt and validate the Portuguese version of the Knee Outcome Survey-Activities of Daily Living Scale (KOS-ADLS). This version was obtained with forward/backward translations, consensus panels and pre-testing. The Portuguese KOS-ADLS and Medical Outcomes Study, 36-item Short Form (SF-36) questionnaires, visual analogue scales (VAS) of pain, disability and discomfort, and a form for patient’s characteristics were administered to 168 subjects with knee osteoarthritis (OA). Reliability was acceptable (Cronbach’s alpha?=?0.91; ICC?=?0.97). There were significant correlations with SF-36 physical component subscales, all VAS, and duration of knee OA. The subjects with bilateral knee OA and that need walking aids obtained lower scores (p?<?0.001). No floor/ceiling effects were detected. Responsiveness to physical therapy was showed (standardized effect size?=?0.62; standardized response mean?=?1.02). The Portuguese KOS-ADLS evidenced acceptable reliability, validity, floor/ceiling effects, and responsiveness
Cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the european portuguese version of the western ontario shoulder instability index (WOSI)
Introduction: The Western Ontario Shoulder Instability Index (WOSI) is a self-administered questionnaire specifically used to determine the impact of shoulder instability on quality of life. The aim of this study was to translate the WOSI into European Portuguese and analyze its validity and reliability in a population with shoulder instability.Material and Methods: The WOSI was translated and culturally adapted from its original version into European Portuguese (WOSI PT). Internal consistency and test-retest analyses were conducted to determine the level of reliability of the scale. WOSI-PT, Quick DASH, and SF-12 questionnaires were applied to 81 patients with symptomatic shoulder instability to assess validity, and reliability was tested by randomly selecting 50 patients within 72 hours using a test-retest design. Results: The reliability of the WOSI-PT was very high, with Cronbach´s alpha equal to 0.97 and an intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.98. Regarding the construct validity, the correlation between the WOSI-PT and QuickDASH was high and negative (-0.79). The correlations between WOSI-PT and SF-12 were positive, respectively, moderate with physical (0.66) and low with mental (0.34) health. Conclusion: WOSI-PT is a reliable and valid instrument for assessing the functional impact of shoulder joint instability on quality of life. Evolution of conventional and functional ratio in individuals after reconstruction of anterior cruciate ligament
Regional Nº1, no Porto. Todos os indivíduos que
participaram no estudo tiveram de preencher o
consentimento informado.
o cálculo do rácio convencional=Isquiotibiais
A recolha
apresentaram GE:0,67±0,17; GC:0,98±0,22 no rácio
funcional a 60˚/s e GE:0,66±0,12; GC:0,58±0,11
no rácio convencional a 60˚/s é GE:0,62±0,10 e
GC:0,58±0,11.
do rácio convencional e funcional a 60˚/s tendem a
aproximar-se dos valores normativas aos 12 meses
após a cirurgia de reconstrução da ligamento
cruzado anterior.ABSTRACT:
Goals
Understanding how the values of the functional and
conventional ratios have envolved after six months
of reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament.
Besides that, comparing the values with healthy
people.
Materials and methods
The sample is non-probabilistic and it is convenience.
The experimental group had 19 people, that were
recruited at the Hospital Militar Regional Nº1 Nº1,
in Porto. All the people, who participated in the
study had to fill out the informed consent. After this
procedure, the data were collected on the isokinetic.
With the isokinetic, it was possible to: (a) collect the
peak torque values of the hamstrings in concentric
action and the quadriceps in concentric action which
allows the calculation of the conventional ratio =
(Hamstring (concentric)) / (Quadriceps (concentric)
and (b) to obtain the peak torque value of the
hamstrings in eccentric action and the quadriceps
in concentric action, which allowed to calculate
the functional ratio = (Hamstrings (Eccentric)) /
(Quadriceps (concentric)). The data were collected
at a speed of 60˚ / s. In the other way, the controlled
group had 32 healthy people, who made the same
procedures, but the collections were made at Escola
Superior de Saúde Dr. Lopes Dias. Results
In T0, the experimental group and the controlled
group had an EW: 0.67 ± 0.17; GC: 0.98 ± 0.22 of the
functional ratio at 60 ° / s and GE: 0.66 ± 0.12; GC:
0.58 ± 0.11 of conventional ratio at 60˚ / s. After 12
months of surgical intervention, the functional ratio
values at 60˚ / s are GE: 0.64 ± 0.13 and GC: 0.98 ±
0.22, while in the conventional ratio at 60˚ / s it is
GE: 0.62 ± 0.10 and GC: 0.58 ± 0.11. The values of
functional ratio at 60˚ / s between T0 and T1 are T0:
0.67 ± 0.17 and T1: 0.64 ± 0.13 and the values of the
conventional ratio at 60˚ / s between T0 and T1 are
T0: 0.66 ± 0.12 and T1: 0.62 ± 0.10. Conclusion
The obtained values suggest that the values of the
conventional and functional ratios at 60˚ / s tend
to approximate the normative values at 12 months
after reconstruction surgery of the anterior cruciate

Evidence-based practice questionnaire for physical therapists: Portuguese translation, adaptation, validity, and reliability
BACKGROUND: Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) is becoming increasingly important in Physical Therapy (PT). For proper designing, implementing, disseminating and evaluating EBP in PT, a valid and reliable questionnaire measuring attitudes, knowledge, behavior, prerequisites, and barriers related to EBP and guidelines is needed. One questionnaire that could be used to collect this information is the “EBP Questionnaire”, developed by Jette et al. 2003. However, to our knowledge, no Portuguese version or published study with the Portuguese PT population was performed using this questionnaire. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to translate, cross-culturally adapt and validate the “EBP Questionnaire” to European Portuguese and for the PT population. Material and Methods: A draft version was pilot tested for content validity (n=17), and a revised version was tested for test-retest reliability (n=72). The percentage of agreement and the Kappa coefficients between the 2 tests were analyzed. Additionally, the internal consistency was calculated. RESULTS: The preliminary final version of the European Portuguese EBP questionnaire was well accepted (only the items 22, 23, 45-51 needed to be reviewed). The mean average percentage of agreement was 82% (ranged 58–97%), and the Kappa coefficients were 0.658 (ranged 0.336–0.844). In the internal consistency, the mean average Cronbach’s ? coefficients were 0.665 (ranged 0.365–0.879). CONCLUSION: The results suggested that this questionnaire can be a useful instrument for measuring self-reported beliefs, attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors related to EBP in the Portuguese PTs context
