Catches in ghost-fishing octopus and fish traps in the northeastern Atlantic Ocean (Algarve, Portugal)
Ghost fishing is the term used to describe the continued capture of fish and other living organisms after a
fisherman has lost all control over the gear. Traps may be lost for a variety of reasons including theft, vandalism,
abandonment, interactions with other gear, fouling on the bottom (i.e., traps and ropes are caught on rocky substrate), bad weather, and human error (Laist, 1995). Annual trap loss can be as high as 20% to 50% of fished traps in some fisheries (Al-Masroori et al., 2004). Because lost traps can continue to fish for long periods, albeit
with decreasing efficiency over time (e.g., Smolowitz, 1978; Breen, 1987, 1990; Guillory, 1993), ghost fishing is
a concern in fisheries worldwide
Analysis of a vegetable oil performance in a milling process by MQL lubrication
In this work, we carried out a comparison between the dry machining of an aluminum block with conventional cutting oil and a block with vegetable oil. The two oils had different flow rates. Using the Taguchi method, it was possible to determine the matrices for optimizing the best parameters for each group of tests. Then, we studied the utility of using vegetable oil as a cutting lubricant. We found that the vegetable oil studied in this work had good properties in terms of reducing cutting temperatures but was less effective than conventional cutting oil in reducing the surface roughness of the machined part. Tribological tests were carried out to understand the influence of the selected lubricants in reducing friction and wear. After the sliding experiments, which were performed without lubrication in the presence of the same lubricants that were used in the machining tests and in the presence of distilled water, we concluded that vegetable oil has satisfactory lubricating properties that are similar to those of the conventional cutting fluid, indicating a potential for consideration as an effective alternative to the conventional cutting fluid, with economic, environmental, and health advantages.Financial support was provided by Portugal’s national funding FCT/MCTES (PIDDAC)

Space of memory and representation : Bouça da Cova da Moura (Ardegães, Maia, Northwest of Portugal)
Bouça da Cova da Moura is the local place-name attributed to a stretch of a plateau overlooking the Leça valley. Here,
Neolithic burial mounds share their landscape setting with scatters of archaeological materials that include Bell Beaker fragments,
idols and metalwork. Since these are mostly surface findings, their contexts have not yet been accurately determined. Another
significant feature is the presence of prehistoric rock carvings. The plateau may thus be considered a public space, conceptually and
physically built over time. Its significance and meanings were certainly created and transmitted through practices of memory
construction which are representative of cultural identity and social cohesion.
The rock carvings of Bouça da Cova da Moura (Ardegães, Maia, Northern Portugal) in the context of Late Prehistory in the Leça basin
A inserção deste
a Pré-história Recente. Neste sentido as diferentes
The aim of this paper is to offer an overview of the
rock art assemblage at Bouça da Cova da Moura
in its local and regional contexts. The site is located
in Ardegães, parish of Águas Santas, municipality
of Maia, district of Porto, in north-western
Portugal. Fieldwork carried out in the end of the
20th century and the beginning of the 21st century,
resulted in the discovery of new carved surfaces in
the place where the well-known ‘pedra partida de
Ardegães’ had been found; it was not only possible
to unveil aspects related to its topographical context
but also to discover other materialities which
are spatially related to the rock carvings.
Stylistic analysis undertaken to the set of carvings
allow us to consider that we are beyond an assemblage
which is partly constituted of rock art compositions
belonging to the prehistoric art tradition
conventionally called atlantic art, there is one
schematic human figure and other motifs that belong
to historical periods.
In the vicinities of the carved outcrops there are
megalithic monuments dated to the Neolithic, scatters
of pottery fragments probably dated to the
Copper Age, evidence for a Bronze Age occupation
site, as well as clusters of surface finds from
the same period. Overall, the field data recovered
so far is extremely relevant for the analysis of the
biography of this place at a small scale of analysis.
The integration of this locus in a wider spatial scale,
i.e. in the plateau that cuts across the territory
in the north-south direction linking it to the Bougado hills, allow us to admit that this rock art complex
would be part of a vast territory of symbolic
significance in Late Prehistory. Thus, the distinct
archaeological remains may be the materialisation
of the importance of this geomorphological unit in
the cognitive map and ideological universe of the
prehistoric communities who dwelled, over a long
period of time, along the middle basin of the River
Neiva. These different materialities would result
from a process of addition in the occupation of the
plateau, of its reuse and reinterpretation in a cyclical
time.Este texto insere-se no projeto Bronze Age

UV-A activation of peroxymonosulfate for the removal of micropollutants from secondary treated wastewater
The occurrence of micropollutants (MPs) in the aquatic environment poses a threat to the environment and to the human health. The application of sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) to eliminate these contaminants has attracted attention in recent years. In this work, the simultaneous degradation of 20 multi-class MPs (classified into 5 main categories, namely antibiotics, beta-blockers, other pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and herbicides) was evaluated for the first time in secondary treated wastewater, by activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) with UV-A radiation, without any pH adjustment or iron addition. The optimal PMS concentration to remove the spiked target MPs (100 mu g L-1) from wastewater was 0.1 mM, leading to an average degradation of 80% after 60 min, with most of the elimination occurring during the first 5 min. Synergies between radiation and the oxidant were demonstrated and quantified, with an average extent of synergy of 69.1%. The optimized treatment was then tested using non-spiked wastewater, in which 12 out of the 20 target contaminants were detected. Among these, 7 were degraded at some extent, varying from 10.7% (acetamiprid) to 94.4% (ofloxacin), the lower removals being attributed to the quite inferior ratio of MPs to natural organic matter. Phytotoxicity tests carried out with the wastewater before and after photo-activated PMS oxidation revealed a decrease in the toxicity and that the plants were able to grow in the presence of the treated water. Therefore, despite the low degradation rates obtained for some MPs, the treatment effectively reduces the toxicity of the matrix, making the water safer for reuse
The carbonated sedimentation in Ossa-Morena Zone during the Palaeozoic is formed, at least, by two main episodes. However, some chronological questions remain open, due to lack of biostratigraphic data in some carbonates. Sr isotope analysis was performed in selected limestones and marbles of Ossa-Morena Zone, in order to discriminate the Sr signature of the two main carbonate sedimentation episodes. The Sr isotopic data from the analyzed carbonate show two clusters of 87Sr/86Sr ratios, one related with the Lower Cambrian and other with the Lower-Middle Devonian carbonates
