Tyrosine kinase inhibitors for the therapy of anaplastic thyroid cancer

    Get PDF
Anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) is often incurable so new therapeutic approaches are needed. Tyrosine kinases inhibitors (such as imanitib, sunitinib or sorafenib) are under evaluation for the treatment of ATC. Other vascular disrupting agents, such as combretastatin A4 phosphate, and antiangiogenic agents, such as aplidin, PTK787/ZK222584 and human VEGF monoclonal antibodies (bevacizumab, cetuximab), have been evaluated. Small-molecule adenosine triphosphate competitive inhibitors directed intracellularly at EGFRs tyrosine kinase, such as erlotinib or gefitinib, are also studied. Furthermore, new molecules have been shown to be active against ATC, such as CLM94 and CLM3. However, more research is needed to finally identify therapies able to control and to cure this disease

First principles theory of fluctuations in vortex liquids and solids

Consistent perturbation theory for thermodynamical quantities in type II superconductors in magnetic field at low temperatures is developed. It is complementary to the existing expansion valid at high temperatures. Magnetization and specific heat are calculated to two loop order and compare well to existing Monte Carlo simulations and experiments.Comment: 3 .ps fig. In press Phys. Rev.

Intermodal vs. conventional logistic of refrigerated products: a case study from Southern to Northern Europe

Most of perishable goods, such as fruit and vegetables, are transported in Europe by truck and clogging up the main road networks. The increasing demand for freight transport and the environmental concerns all indicate the necessity to embrace new means of transport such as the intermodal one. The intermodal transport uses swap bodies and reefer containers that allow for the use of interchangeable truck, train, and ship to reduce direct and external costs. Nowadays, the utilization of exclusive truck transport is due to its considerable flexibility and often to the disregard of the motor vehicle regulations during transport. This research aims to analyze some essential readjustments that must be made in order to increase efficiency in the logistic of refrigerated fruit and vegetables. To do so, some hypotheses were analyzed and formulated in which the strategic use of the truck was recognized and inserted as part of an intermodal transport system. The transport options of a combined use of ships and trains in association with trucks were evaluated with respect to the current prevalent solution of exclusive use of trucks. Such options were evaluated by comparing them under different itineraries hypotheses (from south Italy, Sicily to Germany, Munich) on the base of costs and transit-times parameters. This was done mainly throughout interviewing sector-relevant transport operators. The results of the comparison between the intermodal and conventional transport was shown to be economically more convenient with respect to both legal and illegal transport by exclusive truck transport, presenting lower per unit costs (swap body or semi-trailer, containing the same amount of goods). Moreover, the intermodal solution scores equal or higher transit times in the comparison with the “transit by regulation compliance” and much higher transit times if compared with the “illegal” option. Therefore, the regulation compliance aspect would partially promote the use of intermodal options in a future fair competition. In addition, besides reducing the direct costs, it produces several other positive effects in terms of external costs to the society such as to reduce road crashes, noises, atmospheric emissions and greenhouse effect. A more efficient system should plan an integrated system of arrival and departure organizing together the schedules of ships and trains dedicated to perishable goods and increasing the transported amounts. Furthermore, another idea is to stipulate commercial agreements with train operators, applying a reduction on the base price, by ensuring the delivery of a block train for an arranged period.   Keywords: Intermodal, freight logisticcentre, truck haulage, rail hub; terminal

Signature region within the 16S rDNA sequences of Aeromonas popoffii

    Get PDF
To identify a group of eight Aeromonas strains of our collection showing ribotyping patterns similar to those described for the species Aeromonas popoffii, 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis was performed. Results were in agreement with the DNA binding values, and allowed the identification of a ‘signature region' differentiating the A. popoffii strains from all other members of the genus Aeromona

Synthesis and solution properties of poly(p,α dimethylstyrene-co-maleic anhydride):The use of a monomer potentially obtained from renewable sources as a substitute of styrene in amphiphilic copolymers

The use of p,α-dimethylstyrene, potentially obtainable from renewable sources, as a substitute for styrene in the synthesis of amphiphilic copolymers is reported in this work. A series of novel poly(p,α-dimethylstyrene-co-maleic anhydride) (SMA) copolymers was synthesized, characterized, and studied as potential polymeric surfactants. After hydrolysis, the copolymers solution properties were compared to the similar and very well-known styrene-maleic acid copolymers. Both series of copolymers were synthesized using reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer-mediated polymerization (RAFT), and a sample of poly(p,α-dimethylstyrene-co-maleic anhydride) was synthesized via classical free radical polymerization. The synthesized copolymers were studied from the point of view of their solution properties, with particular attention to the influence of the macromolecular and chemical structure on the surface tension of their aqueous solutions. Our results suggest that p,α-dimethylstyrene can be employed in copolymers with maleic anhydride, the resulting material being a valid alternative to SMA copolymers for various applications, such as emulsifiers and dispersants. Furthermore, the DMSMA series seems to be slightly more surface active than SMA

Linking the hydrodynamic and kinetic description of a dissipative relativistic conformal theory

We use the entropy production variational method to associate a one particle distribution function to the assumed known energy-momentum and entropy currents describing a relativistic conformal fluid. Assuming a simple form for the collision operator we find this one particle distribution function explicitly, and show that this method of linking the hydro and kinetic description is a non trivial generalization of Grad's ansatz. The resulting constitutive relations are the same as in the conformal dissipative type theories discussed in J. Peralta-Ramos and E. Calzetta, Phys. Rev. D {\bfseries 80}, 126002 (2009). Our results may prove useful in the description of freeze-out in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions.Comment: v2: 23 pages, no figures, accepted in Phys. Rev.

    Hepatic epidermoid cyst

open6noWe describe the extraordinary finding of a hepatic epidermoid cyst in a 5-year-old patient, treated successfully with laparoscopic deroofing and mucosal stripping. The pathologic examination revealed a cyst with the same features of a true epithelial splenic cyst whose origin is still controversial, even though a coelomic derivation is the most accredited hypothesis. A cyst in this anatomic district with such characteristics has never been described in existent literature.openDi Salvo, N.*; Libri, M.; Gargano, T.; Salfi N; Ruggeri, G.; Lima, M.Di Salvo, N.*; Libri, M.; Gargano, T.; Salfi N; Ruggeri, G.; Lima, M

Information transmission through lossy bosonic memory channels

We study the information transmission through a quantum channel, defined over a continuous alphabet and losing its energy en route, in presence of correlated noise among different channel uses. We then show that entangled inputs improve the rate of transmission of such a channel.Comment: 6 pages revtex, 2 eps figure
