A Quantum Bound-State Description of Black Holes
A relativistic framework for the description of bound states consisting of a
large number of quantum constituents is presented, and applied to black-hole
interiors. At the parton level, the constituent distribution, number and energy
density inside black holes are calculated, and gauge corrections are discussed.
A simple scaling relation between the black hole mass and constituent number is
established.Comment: Sections on asymptotic framework for bound states and composite

Probing the Constituent Structure of Black Holes
Based on recent ideas, we propose a framework for the description of black
holes in terms of constituent graviton degrees of freedom. Within this
formalism a large black hole can be understood as a bound state of N
longitudinal gravitons. In this context black holes are similar to baryonic
bound states in quantum chromodynamics which are described by fundamental quark
degrees of freedom. As a quantitative tool we employ a quantum bound state
description originally developed in QCD that allows to consider black holes in
a relativistic Hartree like framework. As an application of our framework we
calculate the cross section for scattering processes between graviton emitters
outside of a Schwarzschild black hole and absorbers in its interior, that is
gravitons. We show that these scatterings allow to directly extract structural
observables such as the momentum distribution of black hole constituents.Comment: Extended version, accepted for publication in JHE
Towards a Quantum Theory of Solitons
We formulate a quantum coherent state picture for topological and
non-topological solitons. We recognize that the topological charge arises from
the infinite occupation number of zero momentum quanta flowing in one
direction. Thus, the Noether charge of microscopic constituents gives rise to a
topological charge in the macroscopic description. This fact explains the
conservation of topological charge from the basic properties of coherent
states. It also shows that no such conservation exists for non-topological
solitons, which have finite mean occupation number. Consequently, they can have
an exponentially-small but non-zero overlap with the vacuum, leading to vacuum
instability. This amplitude can be interpreted as a coherent state description
of false vacuum decay. Next we show that we can represent topological solitons
as a convolution of two sectors that carry information about topology and
energy separately, which makes their difference very transparent. Finally, we
show how interaction among the solitons can be understood from basic properties
of quantum coherent states.Comment: Matches version published at Nuclear Physics
Quantum corpuscular approach to solutions in gravity and field theory
We formulate a quantum theory of classical solutions in gravity and field theory in terms of a large number of constituent degrees of freedom. The description is realized in two different ways.
In the first part we introduce the so-called auxiliary current description. The basic idea is to represent the true quantum state of the solution one considers in terms of a multi- local composite operator of the fields of the microscopic theory. Although the approach is completely general, we will be mostly interested in representing black holes as bound states of a large number of gravitons. We show how the mass of the black hole arises microscopically as a collective effect of N gravitons composing the bound state. For that purpose we compute observables associated to the black hole interior such as the constituent density of gravitons and their energy density, respectively. As a next step, it is shown how these observables can be embedded within S-matrix processes. In particular, it is demonstrated that an outside observer has access to the black hole interior doing scattering experiments. Measuring the cross section for the scattering of particles on black holes, the outside observer is sensitive to the distribution of gravitons in the black hole. Possible implications concerning the information paradox are discussed. Finally, we show how geometric concepts, and in particular the Schwarzschild solution emerge as an effective description derived from our construction.
In the second part, an alternative approach based on coherent states in presented. First, we apply our reasoning to solitons in field theory. In particular, we explicitly show how well-known properties of solitons such as interactions, false vacuum decay or conservation of topological charge follow easily from the basic properties of coherent states. Secondly, we develop in detail a similar quantum picture of instantons. Since instantons can be understood in terms of solitons in one more spatial dimension evolving in Euclidean time, a coherent state description of the latter implies a similar description of the former. Using the coherent state picture we develop a novel quantum mechanical understanding of the physics of instanton-induced transitions and the concept of resurgence. Finally, we consider solitons in supersymmetric theories. It is shown that the corpuscular effects lead to a novel mechanism of supersymmetry breaking which can never be accounted for in the semi- classical approach.
In the last part of the thesis we resolve anti-de Sitter (AdS) space-time as a coherent state. On the one hand, we explain how well-known holographic and geometric properties can easily be understood in terms of the occupation number of gravitons in the state. On the other hand, we explicitly compute corpuscular corrections to the scalar propagator in AdS. Furthermore, it is shown that corpuscular effects lead to deviations from thermality an Unruh observer in AdS measures.Wir formulieren eine Quantentheorie von L ̈osungen in Gravitation und Feldtheorie basierend auf einer großen Anzahl von Konstituentenfreiheitsgraden. The frequency response of acoustic Doppler current profilers: Spatiotemporal response and implications for tidal turbine site assessment
The lifespan of a tidal turbine is strongly affected by the unsteady loading it experiences, so knowledge of the mean flow speed is not sufficient: unsteadiness must also be quantified. One of the most common turbulence measurement devices in the marine environment is the Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP). The variance of steady velocity measurements from ADCPs has been studied in detail, but very little attention has been given to the fundamental limits of ADCPs in terms of the frequencies and lengthscales that they can capture.
In this paper, it is shown that the ADCP acts as a lowpass filter to eddies and that even optimistic calculations predict significant attenuation at lengthscales up to ten times the blade chord of a typical tidal turbine. For a typical 40 m deep channel wavelengths below 3-4 m are attenuated by 90% or more. Those eddies that are not filtered out are then subject to a distortion that will either amplify or attenuate the signal depending on the precise turbulence characteristics of the site in question. While this low-pass filtering may alter some global statistics by truncating the observed spectrum,
it is most damaging when data is extracted for particular frequencies, as a turbine designer may do when assessing unsteady loading and fatigue life.
It is therefore recommended that high-resolution turbulence data, e.g. from a hotwire, is captured over part of the water column and that this is used to calibrate ADCP data.© 2014 IEEE. Plasmodium falciparum exported protein PFE60 influences Maurer's clefts architecture and virulence complex composition
Plasmodium falciparum, the most lethal malaria parasite species for humans, vastly remodels the mature erythrocyte host cell upon invasion for its own survival. Maurer's clefts (MC) are membraneous structures established by the parasite in the cytoplasm of infected cells. These organelles are deemed essential for trafficking of virulence complex proteins. The display of the major virulence protein, P. falciparum erythrocyte membrane protein 1 (PfEMP1) on the surface of the infected red blood cell and the subsequent cytoadhesion of infected cells in the microvasculature of vital organs is the key mechanism that leads to the pathology associated with malaria infection. In a previous study we established that PFE60 (PIESP2) is one of the protein components of this complex. Here we demonstrate that PFE60 plays a role in MC lamella segmentation since in the absence of the protein, infected cells display a higher number of stacked MC compared with wild type infected red blood cells. Also, another exported parasite protein (Pf332) failed to localise correctly to the MC in cells lacking PFE60. Furthermore - unlike all other described resident MC membrane proteins - PFE60 does not require its transmembrane regions to be targeted to the organelle. We also provide further evidence that PFE60 is not a red blood cell surface antigen. This work was supported by the Australian Research Council (DP1093518 and DP0878953)
