    Saturn orbiter dual probe mission

    Get PDF
The described Saturn orbiter dual probe mission and spacecraft combines three systems into a multi-purpose Saturn exploration package. The spacecraft consists of: (1) Saturn orbiter; (2) Saturn probe; and (3) Titan probe or lander. This single spacecraft provides the capability to conduct in situ measurements of the Saturn and Titan atmospheres, and, possibly the Titan surface, as well as a variety of remote sensing measurements. The remote sensing capabilities will be used to study the surfaces, interiors and environments of Saturn's satellites, the rings of Saturn, Saturn's magnetosphere, and synoptic properties of Saturn's atmosphere

First-principles study of the Young's modulus of Si <001> nanowires

    Get PDF
We report the results of first-principles density functional theory calculations of the Young's modulus and other mechanical properties of hydrogen-passivated Si nanowires. The nanowires are taken to have predominantly {100} surfaces, with small {110} facets. The Young's modulus, the equilibrium length and the residual stress of a series of prismatic wires are found to have a size dependence that scales like the surface area to volume ratio for all but the smallest wires. We analyze the physical origin of the size dependence, and compare the results to two existing models.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Voyager Interstellar Mission (VIM)

    Get PDF
The DSN (Deep Space Network) mission support requirements for the Voyager Interstellar Mission (VIM) are summarized. The general objectives of the VIM are to investigate the interplanetary and interstellar media and to continue the Voyager program of ultraviolet astronomy. The VIM will utilize both Voyager spacecraft for the period from January 1990 through December 2019. The mission objectives are outlined and the DSN support requirements are defined through the presentation of tables and narratives describing the spacecraft flight profile; DSN support coverage; frequency assignments; support parameters for telemetry, control and support systems; and tracking support responsibility

First-principles calculation of mechanical properties of Si <001> nanowires and comparison to nanomechanical theory

We report the results of first-principles density functional theory calculations of the Young's modulus and other mechanical properties of hydrogen-passivated Si nanowires. The nanowires are taken to have predominantly {100} surfaces, with small {110} facets according to the Wulff shape. The Young's modulus, the equilibrium length and the constrained residual stress of a series of prismatic beams of differing sizes are found to have size dependences that scale like the surface area to volume ratio for all but the smallest beam. The results are compared with a continuum model and the results of classical atomistic calculations based on an empirical potential. We attribute the size dependence to specific physical structures and interactions. In particular, the hydrogen interactions on the surface and the charge density variations within the beam are quantified and used both to parameterize the continuum model and to account for the discrepancies between the two models and the first-principles results.Comment: 14 pages, 10 figure

Examining the Relationship Between Antecedents of Sexuality and Women\u27s Reported Level of Sexual Satisfaction During the First Five Years of Marriage

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between antecedents of sexuality and the level of sexual satisfaction in females who had been married no more than five years. Past research has examined communication, presence of orgasm, sexual desire, and frequency of sexual activity and various other antecedents of sexual satisfaction. One relationship that was an addition to those already found in the literature was sexual knowledge as an antecedent to sexual satisfaction. Six questions were formulated for the study: 1. How do females perceive their global sexual functioning? 2. How do females perceive their level of sexual satisfaction? 3. How accurately do females answer questions regarding female and male anatomy and physiology, sexual arousal and response, and sexual technique? 4. What is the relationship between the participants mean scores on the subscales of the Global Sexual Functioning (GSF) and their reported level of sexual satisfaction? 5. What is the relationship between the participants mean scores on the subscales of the Sexual Knowledge Inventory (SKI) and their reported level of sexual satisfaction? 6. What is the relationship between the participants mean scores on the subscales of the Sexual Knowledge Inventory (SKI) and their reported level of Global Sexual Functioning (GSF)? The research questions were tested with data from 217 females who completed a survey with questions about sexual functioning, sexual satisfaction and sexual knowledge. Results found that five variables accounted for 43% of the variance to sexual satisfaction namely: variety of sexual activities, not experiencing negative emotions, frequency of sexual activity, sexual dysfunction, and the time intercourse lasts. Conclusions and suggestions for future research are presented

Matching Conditions in Atomistic-Continuum Modeling of Materials

A new class of matching condition between the atomistic and continuum regions is presented for the multi-scale modeling of crystals. They ensure the accurate passage of large scale information between the atomistic and continuum regions and at the same time minimize the reflection of phonons at the interface. These matching conditions can be made adaptive if we choose appropriate weight functions. Applications to dislocation dynamics and friction between two-dimensional atomically flat crystal surfaces are described.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
