    Effectiveness of the GAEC cross compliance standard Protection of permanent pasture: prohibition to convert permanent pasture into arable crops in avoiding habitat deterioration

    By the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century new developments in agricultural technology caused an intensification of the agricultural practices. Species adapted to the diversity of structures or resources of high naturalistic value farmlands, like permanent pasture, cannot survive under increasingly high intensity agricultural management. The Italian MD n.30125 dated 22/12/2009 (Standard 4.1) defines, among the measures for the protection of permanent pasture and avoidance the deterioration of habitats, the prohibition to convert permanent pasture into arable crops and to till with the exception of agricultural practices related to the renewal and/or thickening of the sward and to the drainage water management. Permanent pastures biodiversity performs key ecological services and if correctly assembled in time and space can lead to agroecosystems capable of sponsoring their own soil fertility, crop protection and productivity. The vegetative cover of permanent pasture prevents soil erosion, replenishes ground water and controls flooding by enhancing infiltration and reducing runoff. The changes of land use or some practices change insect community and vegetation diversity. Physical disturbance of the soil caused by tillage increases risk of erosion and reduces the recycling of nutrients and proper balance between organic matter, soil organism and plant diversity. Is necessary a habitat preservation policy because after a change, even a return to past management would not completely re-establish the complex structure of habitats

    Detection and exploitation of white lupin (Lupinus albus L.) genetic variation for seed γ-conglutin content

    The seed γ-conglutin protein fraction of white lupin has particular pharmacological interest, but its industrial production is hindered by low content in the seed. This study provides an unprecedented assessment of genotypic and environmental variation for seed content and production of γ-conglutin, exploring also the ability of Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) to predict seed γ-conglutin content. Significant (P < 0.01) genetic variation for seed γ-conglutin content emerged among ten genotypes (cultivars or breeding lines) across three environments (range: 1.59-2.02 %) and five genotypes in other two environments (range: 1.47-1.80 %). Genotype variation was found also for seed protein content and γ-conglutin proportion on total protein, the latter trait having higher impact than the former on genotype variation for seed γ-conglutin content. The production of γ-conglutin per unit area was affected also by genotype yielding ability beside genotype seed γ-conglutin content. No genotype × environment interaction was detected for any γ-conglutin trait. NIRS-based prediction based on cross-validations was only moderately accurate for seed γ-conglutin content (R2 = 0.66), while being accurate for seed protein content (R2 = 0.95). In conclusion, breeding for higher seed γ-conglutin content is feasible using data from very few test sites and, to some extent, NIRS-based predictions

    Deep learning-based algorithm for postoperative glioblastoma MRI segmentation: a promising new tool for tumor burden assessment

    Objective: Clinical and surgical decisions for glioblastoma patients depend on a tumor imaging-based evaluation. Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be applied to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) assessment to support clinical practice, surgery planning and prognostic predictions. In a real-world context, the current obstacles for AI are low-quality imaging and postoperative reliability. The aim of this study is to train an automatic algorithm for glioblastoma segmentation on a clinical MRI dataset and to obtain reliable results both pre- and post-operatively. Methods: The dataset used for this study comprises 237 (71 preoperative and 166 postoperative) MRIs from 71 patients affected by a histologically confirmed Grade IV Glioma. The implemented U-Net architecture was trained by transfer learning to perform the segmentation task on postoperative MRIs. The training was carried out first on BraTS2021 dataset for preoperative segmentation. Performance is evaluated using DICE score (DS) and Hausdorff 95% (H95). Results: In preoperative scenario, overall DS is 91.09 (± 0.60) and H95 is 8.35 (± 1.12), considering tumor core, enhancing tumor and whole tumor (ET and edema). In postoperative context, overall DS is 72.31 (± 2.88) and H95 is 23.43 (± 7.24), considering resection cavity (RC), gross tumor volume (GTV) and whole tumor (WT). Remarkably, the RC segmentation obtained a mean DS of 63.52 (± 8.90) in postoperative MRIs. Conclusions: The performances achieved by the algorithm are consistent with previous literature for both pre-operative and post-operative glioblastoma's MRI evaluation. Through the proposed algorithm, it is possible to reduce the impact of low-quality images and missing sequences

    Este título, sugestivo por los impactos durante la situación de la Covid 19 en el mundo, y que en Colombia lastimosamente han sido muy críticos, permiten asumir la obligada superación de tensiones sociales, políticas, y económicas; pero sobre todo científicas y tecnológicas. Inicialmente, esto supone la existencia de una capacidad de la sociedad colombiana por recuperar su estado inicial después de que haya cesado la perturbación a la que fue sometida por la catastrófica pandemia, y superar ese anterior estado de cosas ya que se encontraban -y aún se encuentran- muchos problemas locales mal resueltos, medianamente resueltos, y muchos sin resolver: es decir, habrá que rediseñar y fortalecer una probada resiliencia social existente - producto del prolongado conflicto social colombiano superado parcialmente por un proceso de paz exitoso - desde la tecnociencia local; como lo indicaba Markus Brunnermeier - economista alemán y catedrático de economía de la Universidad de Princeton- en su libro The Resilient Society…La cuestión no es preveerlo todo sino poder reaccionar…aprender a recuperarse rápido.This title, suggestive of the impacts during the Covid 19 situation in the world, and which have unfortunately been very critical in Colombia, allows us to assume the obligatory overcoming of social, political, and economic tensions; but above all scientific and technological.     Anti-Neurotoxins from <i>Micrurus mipartitus</i> in the Development of Coral Snake Antivenoms

    In Colombia, the genus Micrurus includes 30 species, of which M. mipartitus and M. dumerilii are the most widely distributed. Micrurus causes less than 3% of the approximately 5000 cases of snakebite per year. The elapid envenomation caused by the snakes from the Micrurus genus, are characterized by the severity of their clinical manifestations, due to the venom neurotoxic components such as three-finger toxins (3FTx) and phospholipases (PLA2). The treatment for snakebites is the administration of specific antivenoms, however, some of them have limitations in their neutralizing ability. A strategy proposed to improve antivenoms is to produce antibodies against the main components of the venom. The aim of this work was to produce an antivenom, using an immunization protocol including the main 3FTx and PLA2 responsible for M. mipartitus lethality. The antibody titers were determined by ELISA in rabbits’ serum. The immunized animals elicited a response against toxins and whole venom. The Immunoglobulin G (IgGs) obtained were able to neutralize the lethal effect of their homologous toxins. A combination of antivenom from M. mipartitus with antitoxins improved their neutralizing ability. In the same way, a mixture of anti 3FTx and PLA2 protected the mice from a 1.5 median lethal dose (LD50) of M. mipartitus venom. The results showed that this might be a way to improve antibody titers specificity against the relevant toxins in M. mipartitus venom and indicated that there is a possibility to develop and use recombinant 3FTx and PLA2 toxins as immunogens to produce antivenoms. Additionally, this represents an alternative to reduce the amount of venom used in anti-coral antivenom production

    Olfactory Bulbectomy Model of Depression Lowers Responding for Food in Male and Female Rats: The Modulating Role of Caloric Restriction and Response Requirement

    Depression is a psychiatric disorder characterized by a marked decrease in reward sensitivity. By using the olfactory bulbectomy (OBX) model of depression, it was shown that OBX rats display enhanced drug-taking and seeking behaviors in a self-administration paradigm than sham-operated (SHAM) controls, and sex is an important regulating factor. To reveal potential strain effects, we compared the operant behavior of male and female Sprague–Dawley and Wistar OBX and SHAM rats trained to self-administer palatable food pellets. Results showed that Sprague–Dawley OBX rats of both sexes exhibited lower operant responding rates and food intake than SHAM controls. Food restriction increased responding in both OBX and SHAM groups. Female rats responded more than males, but the OBX lesion abolished this effect. In Wistar rats, bulbectomy lowered food self-administration only during the last training days. Food self-administration was not significantly affected in Wistar rats by sex. In summary, this study showed that bulbectomy significantly reduces operant responding and food intake in male and female Sprague–Dawley rats while inducing a mild reducing effect only in the Wistar strain. Strain-dependent effects were also observed in the modulating role of sex and food restriction on operant responding and palatable food intake
