Real Option in Biotechnological Firms Valuation. An Empirical Analysis of European Firms.
Firms’ intangible assets are becoming more and more relevant in the different areas within the financial discipline. Its management, its quantification and its valuation nowadays constitute one of the main challenges which economy and business try to face. Through this paper we will evaluate some models based on the real options theory in order to estimate the intangible assets value of certain firms, specifically I+D biotechnological firms projects. With this aim, and after deep research on biotechnological industry, we will establish the parameters regarding one model which can be considered as a quantitative valuation method that we apply to a sample of biotechnological European companies. The results obtained through the empirical analysis are promising and they support the use of the real options theory to evaluate biotechnological firms. Firms’ intangible assets are becoming more and more relevant in the different areas within the financial discipline. Determinants of the intention to purchase an autochthonous local lamb breed: Spanish case study
The aim of the paper is to study consumers' acceptability for a lamb meat from a local autochthonous breed. An intention to purchase model was developed based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and estimated using data from a survey conducted in Spain. Results indicated that consumers were willing to buy this lamb meat because 86% of respondents said that they probably/definitely would buy it, although only 23% would if the meat is not available in their usual meat store. Then, the lack of availability in the market is an aspect limiting its consumption. The most important factors explaining the intention to purchase for consumers who would purchase this meat if it were not available in their usual store are the importance attached to the animal breed and their social embeddedness with the local area. An appropriate food policy would be to inform consumers about the importance of the animal breed in the quality of the meat and the local origin.Peer ReviewedPublishe
Spanish crowdfunding as a new social tool to empowering the sustainability
The objective of this document is to analyze the role of crowdfunding in Spain oriented to finance activities with positive impact: social and ecological. First, throughout a review of the theoretical framework, second, across an analysis about the situation of the sector in Spain resulting from a structured questionnaire, answered by the crowdfunding plataforms’ managers. The article analyzes the taxonomy of the sector in Spain, its evolution, as well as the profitability, risks and opportunities that it offers to entrepreneurs and investors. There is no doubt that Internet is playing a decisive role transforming the society in a new economic-decision agent that designs its own destiny. After the review, in line with the theoretical frame work, the article concludes that crowdfunding turns out to be a very useful tool to achieve growth based on sustainability. This phenomenon is changing the old paradigm of the investors, from an agent without scruples, to one other that is socially and emotionally responsible, being able to create a virtuous circle in which economic profitability and improvements on its environment are feed-back.
The Expafruit, S.A. Company has been in charge of the fruit, vegetable, cereal, chocolate and
other ingredient preparations sector for more than 40 years and it is therefore easy to work with
typical preparations of relatively well-known formulas. But the work gets complicated when new
projects arise for which preparations must be formulated with ingredients/additives and
proportions totally different from those known. Then the role of the R&D department comes into
action, which is in charge of designing each sauce based on the client's preferences, making sure
that it can meet all the qualitative parameters.
In order to be able to transfer this safety based on the most innovative preparations, it’s
necessary to carry out shelf-life studies where the development and evolution of the preparations
over time are verified, and to be able to detect problems in time together with their subsequent
solution. In this document, shelf-life studies have been carried out on 3 sauces with totally
different compositions, such as a white chocolate-type filling, a caramel and a carrot and orange
preparation, taking into account in advance the possible problems that each one could have
associated. To carry out this study, samples have been placed at three different temperatures (5,
20 and 36 áµ’C) and it have been analyzed different physical-chemical and organoleptic parameters
with frequencies of "x" days, up to 90 days.
In conclusion, refrigeration temperatures (between 5 and 15 áµ’C) are the optimal ones for the
correct conservation of the preparations, since they generally ensure greater stability around the
physical-chemical parameters and the organoleptic part, apart from be one of the safest ranges

SR-B1, a Key Receptor Involved in the Progression of Cardiovascular Disease: A Perspective from Mice and Human Genetic Studies
High plasma level of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is the main driver of the initiation and progression of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Nevertheless, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) is con-sidered an anti-atherogenic lipoprotein due to its role in reverse cholesterol transport and its ability to receive cholesterol that effluxes from macrophages in the artery wall. The scavenger receptor B class type 1 (SR-B1) was identified as the high-affinity HDL receptor, which facilitates the selective uptake of cholesterol ester (CE) into the liver via HDL and is also implicated in the plasma clearance of LDL, very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) and lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)). Thus, SR-B1 is a multifunc-tional receptor that plays a main role in the metabolism of different lipoproteins. The aim of this review is to highlight the association between SR-B1 and CVD risk through mice and human genetic studies. © 2021 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland
Efficient formalism for large scale ab initio molecular dynamics based on time-dependent density functional theory
A new "on the fly" method to perform Born-Oppenheimer ab initio molecular
dynamics (AIMD) is presented. Inspired by Ehrenfest dynamics in time-dependent
density functional theory, the electronic orbitals are evolved by a
Schroedinger-like equation, where the orbital time derivative is multiplied by
a parameter. This parameter controls the time scale of the fictitious
electronic motion and speeds up the calculations with respect to standard
Ehrenfest dynamics. In contrast to other methods, wave function orthogonality
needs not be imposed as it is automatically preserved, which is of paramount
relevance for large scale AIMD simulations.Comment: 5 pages, 3 color figures, revtex4 packag
