Burlesque or parodic wills constitute a uniform group of poetic texts that were amply read in the 16th and 17th centuries. They were mostly published as part of poetic chapbooks. They provoke laughter by parodying legal wills and occasionally offer remarks of social satire. The main protagonists in these compositions can be animals, historical or fictional characters. Although their form, interest and dissemination associate them to popular forms of literature, they have been utilized by authors of learned compositions. This article analyzes the influence of this subgenre in "Don Quixote"’s last chapter and the certainly parodic testament of its main protagonist. This burlesque character of Quixote’s testament can be confirmed through a reading of Quevedo’s "Testamento de don Quijote".This latter piece in turn belongs to this subgenre and is based on Quevedo’s parodic reading of Quixote’s testament
The semantic value of the two words ‘novelas’ and ‘ejemplares’ may be and has been understood in different ways, in citations as much as in critical studies in the last four hundred years. In this study the question is philologically reexamined in the light of the sense of exemplarity in the preliminary texts of Italian novellieri and their Spanish translations.
The four novellas that Alemán introduces in his Guzmán de Alfarache represent
an important contribution for the definitive structure of the novella genre in Spanish literature
of the XVII century. Often overshadowed by the brilliance of the main work in which they
are incorporated, this novellas are rarely included in the Spanish catalogue of the genre,
perhaps because of the peremptory opinion of Cervantes in the prologue of his Novelas
ejemplares. However, and beyond its undeniable debts with Italian literature, Aleman's
novellas present in its form and content a large number of innovations which, always alert to
the rhetoric of Baroque literature, makes them deserve a greater attention from criticism.
In El caballero determinado the hero travels through a series of spaces clearly inspired by the tales of
chivalry but acquiring, by the very purpose of the book, a patent allegorical connotation whose interpretation
represents the last part of the message of the book. This paper attempts to analyze these spaces and give them a
meaning
