Static versus dynamic loads as an influence on bone remodelling
Bone remodelling activity in the avian ulna was assessed under conditions of disuse alone, disuse with a superimposed continuous compressive load, and disuse interrupted by a short daily period of intermittent loading. The ulna preparation is made by two submetaphyseal osteotomies, the cut ends of the bone being covered with stainless steel caps which, together with the bone they enclosed, are pierced by pins emerging transcutaneously on the dorsal and ventral surfaces of the wing. The 110 mm long undisturbed section of the bone shaft can be protected from functional loading, loaded continuously in compression by joining the pins with springs, or loaded intermittently in compression by engaging the pins in an Instron machine. Similar loads (525 n) were used in both static and dynamic cases engendering similar peak strains at the bone's midshaft (-2000 x 10-6). The intermitent load was applied at a frequency of 1 Hz during a single 100 second period per day as a ramped square wave, with a rate of change of strain during the ramp of 0.01 per second
Origin of mesosiderites as a natural consequence of planet formation
The mineral composition of mesosiderites is described and a theory of the origin and evolution of these meteorites is presented. It is suggested that the asteroid parent body of the mesosiderites also formed in the inner solar system, perhaps just within the orbit of Mars. As a result of close planetary encounters, some bodies that formed near Earth or Venus were gravitationally perturbed into non-circular orbits; a few such bodies passed through the mesosiderite region at high relative velocities, colliding with and destroying a few of the native asteroids. Olivine-rich silicate mantles shattered into small pieces, but the stronger metal cores remained as large fragments. Much of the debris remained in circular orbits and accreted to the basaltic regoliths of intact native asteroids at low relative velocities. The large core fragments that collided with the crust greatly enriched restricted regions of the surface in metal. These localized regions were the mesosiderite progenitors; they accounted for only about 1% of the surface area of the parent bodies

Declines in swimming performance with age: a longitudinal study of Masters swimming champions.
IntroductionBecause of its many participants and thorough records, competitive Masters swimming offers a rich data source for determining the rate of physical decline associated with aging in physically fit individuals. The decline in performance among national champion swimmers, both men and women and in short and long swims, is linear, at about 0.6% per year up to age 70-75, after which it accelerates in quadratic fashion. These conclusions are based primarily on cross-sectional studies, and little is known about individual performance declines with aging. Herein we present performance profiles of 19 male and 26 female national and international champion Masters swimmers, ages 25 to 96 years, participating in competitions for an average of 23 years.Methods and resultsSwimmers' longitudinal data were compared with the fastest times of world record holders across ages 35-100 years by two regression methods. Neither method proved to accurately model this data set: compared with the rates of decline estimated from the world record data, which represent the best recorded times at given ages, there was bias toward shallower rates of performance decline in the longitudinal data, likely owing to a practice effect in some swimmers as they began their Masters programs. In swimmers' later years, once maximum performance had been achieved, individual profiles followed the decline represented in the world records, and a few swimmers became the world record holders. In some instances, the individual profiles indicated performance better than the world record data; these swimmers achieved their times after the world record data were collected in 2005-2006.ConclusionDeclining physiological functional capacity occurs with advancing age, and this is reflected in the performance decrements of aging Masters swimmers. Individual swimmers show different performance trajectories with aging, declines being mitigated by practice, which improves both physiological capacity and swimming technique, particularly in the early years of participation. The longitudinal data of this study indicate that individuals can participate in high-intensity swimming over several decades, competitively improving over those decades until, in some instances, they become world record holders for their age groups
On optical forces in spherical whispering gallery mode resonators
In this paper we discuss the force exerted by the field of an optical cavity
on a polarizable dipole. We show that the modification of the cavity modes due
to interaction with the dipole significantly alters the properties of the
force. In particular, all components of the force are found to be
non-conservative, and cannot, therefore, be derived from a potential energy. We
also suggest a simple generalization of the standard formulas for the optical
force on the dipole, which reproduces the results of calculations based on the
