Preditores de mortalidade relacionados à flutter e fibrilação atrial: Descrição brasileira de 2018 a 2023
Atrial Fibrillation is the most prevalent cardiac arrhythmia, affecting 33 million people globally. In 2023, there were 3,046 new cases and a prevalence of 37.574 million, an increase of 33% in 20 years. This study aims to analyze the epidemiological profile of death rates from AF and flutter in Brazilian territory. This is an epidemiological, quantitative and retrospective study. Participants were individuals who died from flutter and atrial fibrillation in Brazil between 2018 and 2023. The data was organized by age group, sex, race, education and marital status. The analysis included 24,224 individuals, with the majority of deaths occurring in people aged 80 or over (52.15%). As for sex, 56.02% were women and 43.98% men. In terms of education, 24.05% had 1 to 3 years of study. The majority of participants were white (63.04%). As for marital status, 38.68% were widowed. Thus, the highest frequency of death among white females, aged over 80 years, widows, with between 1 and 3 years of schooling and residing in the Southeast region.A Fibrilação Atrial é a arritmia cardíaca mais prevalente, afetando 33 milhões de pessoas globalmente. Análise descritiva das internações hospitalares por traumatismo do olho e da órbita ocular em caráter de urgência no Brasil
Head and facial injuries account for 50% of trauma deaths, with common causes being motorcycle accidents and violence. Orbital fractures are complex due to their three-dimensional anatomy and the main ophthalmological manifestations include low visual acuity, hyphema and ophthalmoplegia, resulting from edema, hemorrhage and various injuries. This work aims to analyze the epidemiological profile of hospital morbidity due to trauma to the eye and ocular orbit as an emergency in Brazil. This quantitative and retrospective ecological study used data from SIH/SUS in DATASUS, collected in June 2024. Variables included region, age group, sex and color/race. During the period analyzed, 13,230 hospitalizations were recorded. The distribution by age group shows that the majority of hospitalizations occurred between 20 and 49 years old (49.61%). Regarding color/race, 38.84% of patients were mixed race, 32.31% white, 4.43% black, 1.18% yellow, and 0.14% indigenous. The highest frequency of hospitalizations was among male individuals, mixed race, aged between 30 and 39 years old, residing in the Southeast region.

Glycosylation of epigallocatechin gallate by engineered glycoside hydrolases from Talaromyces amestolkiae: potential antiproliferative and neuroprotective effect of these molecules
16 p.-6 fig.-2 tab.Glycoside hydrolases (GHs) are enzymes that hydrolyze glycosidic bonds, but some of them can also catalyze the synthesis of glycosides by transglycosylation. However, the yields of this reaction are generally low since the glycosides formed end up being hydrolyzed by these same enzymes. For this reason, mutagenic variants with null or drastically reduced hydrolytic activity have been developed, thus enhancing their synthetic ability. Two mutagenic variants, a glycosynthase engineered from a β-glucosidase (BGL-1-E521G) and a thioglycoligase from a β-xylosidase (BxTW1-E495A), both from the ascomycete Talaromyces amestolkiae, were used to synthesize three novel epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) glycosides. EGCG is a phenolic compound from green tea known for its antioxidant effects and therapeutic benefits, whose glycosylation could increase its bioavailability and improve its bioactive properties. The glycosynthase BGL-1-E521G produced a β-glucoside and a β-sophoroside of EGCG, while the thioglycoligase BxTW1-E495A formed the β-xyloside of EGCG. Glycosylation occurred in the 5″ and 4″ positions of EGCG, respectively. In this work, the reaction conditions for glycosides’ production were optimized, achieving around 90% conversion of EGCG with BGL-1-E521G and 60% with BxTW1-E495A. The glycosylation of EGCG caused a slight loss of its antioxidant capacity but notably increased its solubility (between 23 and 44 times) and, in the case of glucoside, also improved its thermal stability. All three glycosides showed better antiproliferative properties on breast adenocarcinoma cell line MDA-MB-231 than EGCG, and the glucosylated and sophorylated derivatives induced higher neuroprotection, increasing the viability of SH-S5Y5 neurons exposed to okadaic acid. This research was funded by the MICIU/AEI/FEDER (RTI2018-093683-B-I00), Comunidad de Madrid (RETOPROSOST-2-CM P2018/EMT-4459), CSIC Interdisciplinary Thematic Platform (PTI+) NEURO-AGING+ (PTI-NEURO-AGING+), and PI20/00590 Instituto de Salud Carlos III.
