Spectroscopically confirmed brown dwarf members of Coma Berenices and the Hyades
We have obtained low- and medium-resolution spectra of nine brown dwarf candidate members of Coma Berenices and the Hyades using SpEX on the NASA InfraRed Telescope Facility and Long Slit Intermediate Resolution Infrared Spectrograph on the William Herschel Telescope. We conclude that seven of these objects are indeed late M or early L dwarfs, and that two are likely members of Coma Berenices and four of the Hyades. Two objects, cbd40 and Hy3, are suggested to be field L dwarfs, although there is also a possibility that Hy3 is an unresolved binary belonging to the cluster. These objects have masses between 71 and 53MJup, close to the hydrogen-burning boundary for these clusters; however, only an optical detection of lithium can confirm if they are truly substellar
Homomorphisms of quantum groups
In this article, we study several equivalent notions of homomorphism between locally compact quantum groups compatible with duality. In particular, we show that our homomorphisms are equivalent to functors between the respective categories of coactions. We lift the reduced bicharacter to universal quantum groups for any locally compact quantum group defined by a modular multiplicative unitary, without assuming Haar weights. We work in the general setting of modular multiplicative unitaries
Torque magnetometry of an amorphous-alumina/strontium-titanate interface
We report torque magnetometry measurements of an oxide heterostructure consisting of an amorphous Al2O3 thin film grown on a crystalline SrTiO3 substrate (a-AO/STO) by atomic layer deposition. We find a torque response that resembles previous studies of crystalline LaAlO3/SrTiO3 (LAO/STO) heterointerfaces, consistent with strongly anisotropic magnetic ordering in the plane of the interface. Unlike crystalline LAO, amorphous Al2O3 is nonpolar, indicating that planar magnetism at an oxide interface is possible without the strong internal electric fields generated within the polarization catastrophe model. We discuss our results in the context of current theoretical efforts to explain magnetism in crystalline LAO/STO.Chemistry and Chemical Biolog
An ARIMA-Intervention Analysis Model for the Financial Crisis in Chinaâs Manufacturing Industry
Triggered by the subprime mortgage crisis in the United States (U.S.), a financial tsunami has spread rapidly around the globe, from the U.S. to Europe and the rest of the world, causing the world economy to enter a recession. China is no exception, and has suffered a sharp reduction in the growth of its export and manufacturing sectors. In this paper, we attempt to model and analyze the impact of financial crisis on the manufacturing industry in China using data collected from March 2005 to November 2008 by the China Statistical Databases of the National Bureau of Statistics of China. The results indicate that Chinaâs manufacturing industry may have to tolerate a significant negative effect caused by the global financial crisis over a period of time, with its gross industrial output value declining continually throughout 2008 and 2009 before reaching a state of equilibrium. The intervention effect is described in this study as temporary but immediate and abrupt. It is found that the ARIMA-Intervention model is more precise at explaining and analyzing the intervention effects of the financial tsunami
The curious nonexistence of Gaussian 2-designs
2-designs -- ensembles of quantum pure states whose 2nd moments equal those
of the uniform Haar ensemble -- are optimal solutions for several tasks in
quantum information science, especially state and process tomography. We show
that Gaussian states cannot form a 2-design for the continuous-variable
(quantum optical) Hilbert space L2(R). This is surprising because the affine
symplectic group HWSp (the natural symmetry group of Gaussian states) is
irreducible on the symmetric subspace of two copies. In finite dimensional
Hilbert spaces, irreducibility guarantees that HWSp-covariant ensembles (such
as mutually unbiased bases in prime dimensions) are always 2-designs. This
property is violated by continuous variables, for a subtle reason: the
(well-defined) HWSp-invariant ensemble of Gaussian states does not have an
average state because the averaging integral does not converge. In fact, no
Gaussian ensemble is even close (in a precise sense) to being a 2-design. This
surprising difference between discrete and continuous quantum mechanics has
important implications for optical state and process tomography.Comment: 9 pages, no pretty figures (sorry!
Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger nonlocality for continuous variable systems
As a development of our previous work, this paper is concerned with the
Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) nonlocality for continuous variable cases.
The discussion is based on the introduction of a pseudospin operator, which has
the same algebra as the Pauli operator, for each of the modes of a light
field. Then the Bell-CHSH (Clauser, Horne, Shimony and Holt) inequality is
presented for the modes, each of which has a continuous degree of freedom.
Following Mermin's argument, it is demonstrated that for -mode
parity-entangled GHZ states (in an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space) of the
light field, the contradictions between quantum mechanics and local realism
grow exponentially with , similarly to the usual -spin cases.Comment: RevTEX; comments are welcomed; new version with minor change
A Naturally Narrow Positive Parity Theta^+
We present a consistent color-flavor-spin-orbital wave function for a
positive parity Theta^+ that naturally explains the observed narrowness of the
state. The wave function is totally symmetric in its flavor-spin part and
totally antisymmetric in its color-orbital part. If flavor-spin interactions
dominate, this wave function renders the positive parity Theta^+ lighter than
its negative parity counterpart. We consider decays of the Theta^+ and compute
the overlap of this state with the kinematically allowed final states. Our
results are numerically small. We note that dynamical correlations between
quarks are not necessary to obtain narrow pentaquark widths.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure, Revtex4, two-column format, version to be

Astrophysical structures from primordial quantum black holes
The characteristic sizes of astrophysical structures, up to the whole
observed Universe, can be recovered, in principle, assuming that gravity is the
overall interaction assembling systems starting from microscopic scales, whose
order of magnitude is ruled by the Planck length and the related Compton
wavelength. This result agrees with the absence of screening mechanisms for the
gravitational interaction and could be connected to the presence of Yukawa
corrections in the Newtonian potential which introduce typical interaction
lengths. This result directly comes out from quantization of primordial black
holes and then characteristic interaction lengths directly emerge from quantum
field theory.Comment: 11 page
Azimuthal anisotropy and correlations in p+p, d+Au and Au+Au collisions at 200 GeV
We present the first measurement of directed flow () at RHIC. is
found to be consistent with zero at pseudorapidities from -1.2 to 1.2,
then rises to the level of a couple of percent over the range . The latter observation is similar to data from NA49 if the SPS rapidities
are shifted by the difference in beam rapidity between RHIC and SPS.
Back-to-back jets emitted out-of-plane are found to be suppressed more if
compared to those emitted in-plane, which is consistent with {\it jet
quenching}. Using the scalar product method, we systematically compared
azimuthal correlations from p+p, d+Au and Au+Au collisions. Flow and non-flow
from these three different collision systems are discussed.Comment: Quark Matter 2004 proceeding, 4 pages, 3 figure
Azimuthal anisotropy: the higher harmonics
We report the first observations of the fourth harmonic (v_4) in the
azimuthal distribution of particles at RHIC. The measurement was done taking
advantage of the large elliptic flow generated at RHIC. The integrated v_4 is
about a factor of 10 smaller than v_2. For the sixth (v_6) and eighth (v_8)
harmonics upper limits on the magnitudes are reported.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures, contribution to the Quark Matter 2004 proceeding
