Exponentially Enhanced Quantum Metrology
We show that when a suitable entanglement generating unitary operator
depending on a parameter is applied on N qubits in parallel, and an appropriate
observable is measured, a precision of order 2 raised to the power (-N) in
estimating the parameter may be achieved. This exponentially improves the
precision achievable in classical and in quantum non-entangling parallel
strategies. We propose a quantum-optics model of laser light interacting with
an N-qubit system, say a polyatomic molecule, via a generalized Jaynes-Cummings
interaction which, in principle, could achieve the exponentially enhanced

A computer program for obtaining airplane configuration plots from digital Datcom input data
A computer program is described which reads the input file for the Stability and Control Digital Datcom program and generates plots from the aircraft configuration data. These plots can be used to verify the geometric input data to the Digital Datcom program. The program described interfaces with utilities available for plotting aircraft configurations by creating a file from the Digital Datcom input data
Marginal distributions in -dimensional phase space and the quantum marginal theorem
We study the problem of constructing a probability density in 2N-dimensional
phase space which reproduces a given collection of joint probability
distributions as marginals. Only distributions authorized by quantum mechanics,
i.e. depending on a (complete) commuting set of variables, are considered.
A diagrammatic or graph theoretic formulation of the problem is developed. We
then exactly determine the set of ``admissible'' data, i.e. those types of data
for which the problem always admits solutions. This is done in the case where
the joint distributions originate from quantum mechanics as well as in the case
where this constraint is not imposed. In particular, it is shown that a
necessary (but not sufficient) condition for the existence of solutions is
. When the data are admissible and the quantum constraint is not
imposed, the general solution for the phase space density is determined
explicitly. For admissible data of a quantum origin, the general solution is
given in certain (but not all) cases. In the remaining cases, only a subset of

The theory and practice of free trade
David M. Gould, Roy J. Ruffin, and Graeme L. Woodbridge argue that free trade is supported both by economic principles and evidence from countries that have followed open market policies. The authors demonstrate that the countries whose markets are the most open have higher real output and economic growth. ; The authors show that many arguments for protection obscure the benefits countries derive from international trade. High-wage countries not only can compete with low-wage countries, they dominate the world economic stage. Trade deficits or surpluses are not inherently bad or good, but rather reflect a country's consumption and investment decisions over time. Moreover, there is no evidence to suggest that imports cause systematic unemployment or that exports create systematic employment. The authors explain why industrial policies and protection designed to promote particular industries usually backfire; trade policies usually reflect the lobbying efforts of the most vocal and powerful self-interest groups.Free trade
Two photon annihilation operators and squeezed vacuum
Inverses of the harmonic oscillator creation and annihilation operators by their actions on the number states are introduced. Three of the two photon annihilation operators, viz., a(sup +/-1)a, aa(sup +/-1), and a(sup 2), have normalizable right eigenstates with nonvanishing eigenvalues. The eigenvalue equation of these operators are discussed and their normalized eigenstates are obtained. The Fock state representation in each case separates into two sets of states, one involving only the even number states while the other involving only the odd number states. It is shown that the even set of eigenstates of the operator a(sup +/-1)a is the customary squeezed vacuum S(sigma) O greater than

The influence of physical and chemical linkage on the properties of nanocomposites
It has been shown by several groups that the mechanical and electrical behavior of composites changes quite substantially, and often beneficially, when the filler particle size is less than 100 nm in diameter. There is also good reason to believe that the interface between the embedded particulates and the polymer matrix holds the key to understanding the bulk phenomena observed. Materials based on an SiO2-polyolefin system have been formulated with functionalized particulates so as to affect the physical and chemical linkages. The agents used to achieve this include amino-silane, hexamethyl-disilazane and triethoxyvinylsilane. The emerging picture of the interface is supported by detailed dielectric spectroscopy and internal space charge assessment. The nature of the internal structure has been related to the bulk properties observed such as the breakdown strength, voltage endurance, and the measurement of internal charges resulting from interfacial polarization
