Solar sail capture trajectories at Mercury
Mercury is an ideal environment for future planetary exploration by solar sail since it has proved difficult to reach with conventional propulsion and hence remains largely unexplored. In addition, its proximity to the Sun provides a solar sail acceleration of order ten times the sail characteristic acceleration at 1 AU. Conventional capture techniques are shown to be unsuitable for solar sails and a new method is presented. It is shown that capture is bound by upper and lower limits on the orbital elements of the approach orbit and that failure to be within limits results in a catastrophic collision with the planet. These limits are presented for a range of capture inclinations and sail characteristic accelerations. It is found that sail hyperbolic excess velocity is a critical parameter during capture at Mercury, with only a narrow allowed band in order to avoid collision with the planet. The new capture methodis demonstrated for a Mercury sample return mission
`Similar' coordinate systems and the Roche geometry. Application
A new equivalence relation, named relation of 'similarity' is defined and
applied in the restricted three-body problem. Using this relation, a new class
of trajectories (named 'similar' trajectories) are obtained; they have the
theoretical role to give us new details in the restricted three-body problem.
The 'similar' coordinate systems allow us in addition to obtain a unitary and
an elegant demonstration of some analytical relations in the Roche geometry. As
an example, some analytical relations published in Astrophysical Journal by
Seidov in 2004 are demonstrated.Comment: 9 pages (preprint format), 9 figures, published in Astrophysics and

Blue Ocean vs. Five Forces
The article reports on the authors' research in the Netherlands which focused on a profit model in Dutch retail stores and a so-called blue-ocean approach which requires a new market that attracts consumers and increases profits. Topics include the competitive strategy approach to increasing profits. The authors conclude that the blue-ocean strategy or innovation approach is sustainable
Blue Ocean versus Competitive Strategy: Theory and Evidence
Blue ocean strategy seeks to turn strategic management on its head by replacing âcompetitive advantageâ with âvalue innovationâ as the primary goal where firms must create consumer demand and exploit untapped markets. Empirical analysis has been focused on case study evidence and so lacks generality to resolve the debate. We provide a methodological synthesis of the theories enabling us to bring statistical evidence to the debate. Our analysis finds that blue ocean and competitive strategies overlap and managers do not face a discrete either/or decision between each strategy. Our evidence for the Dutch retail industry indicates that blue ocean strategy has prevailed as a dominant long term viable strategy
Industry Dynamics and Entrepreneurship: An Equilibrium Model
This paper conducts the first general equilibrium analysis of the role of entry, exit and profits in industry dynamics. The benefit of our model is twofold. First, to discriminate between entrantsïżœ role of performing the entrepreneurial function of creating disequilibrium and the conventional equilibrating role of moving the industry to a new equilibrium. Second, to discriminate between three aspects of industry dynamics: the effect of entry and exit on market equilibrium, duration of disequilibrium and patterns of adjustment. Using a rich data set of the retail industry, we construct a dynamic simultaneous equilibrium model of profits, entry and exit. We find that indeed entrants play an entrepreneurial function causing long periods of disequilibrium after which a new equilibrium is attained. Moreover, we find ample support for the statement that disequilibrium is the essence of economic progress
The Dynamics of Entry and Exit
The relation between profits and the number of firms in a market is one of the essential topics in the field of industrial organization. Usually, the relation is modeled in an error-correction framework where profits and/or the number of firms respond to out-of-equilibrium situations. In an out-of-equilibrium situation one or both of these variables deviate from some long-term sustainable level. These models predict that in situations of equilibrium, the number of firms does not change and hence, entry equals exit. Moreover, in equilibrium entry and exit are expected to be equal to zero. These predictions are at odds with real life observations showing that entry and exit levels are significantly positive in all markets of substantial size and that entry and exit levels often differ drastically. In this paper we develop a new model for the relation between profit levels and the number of firms by specifying not only an equation for the equilibrium level of profits in a market but also equations for the equilibrium levels of entry and exit. In our empirical application we show that our entry and exit equations satisfy the usual errorcorrection conditions. We also find that a one-time positive shock to entry or profits has a small but permanent positive effect on both the number of firms and total industry profits
Derivation and validation of a multivariate model to predict mortality from pulmonary embolism with cancer: The POMPE-C tool
BackgroundClinical guidelines recommend risk stratification of patients with acute pulmonary embolism (PE). Active cancer increases risk of PE and worsens prognosis, but also causes incidental PE that may be discovered during cancer staging. No quantitative decision instrument has been derived specifically for patients with active cancer and PE. Methods Classification and regression technique was used to reduce 25 variables prospectively collected from 408 patients with AC and PE. Selected variables were transformed into a logistic regression model, termed POMPE-C, and compared with the pulmonary embolism severity index (PESI) score to predict the outcome variable of death within 30 days. Validation was performed in an independent sample of 182 patients with active cancer and PE. Results POMPE-C included eight predictors: body mass, heart rate > 100, respiratory rate, SaO2%, respiratory distress, altered mental status, do not resuscitate status, and unilateral limb swelling. In the derivation set, the area under the ROC curve for POMPE-C was 0.84 (95% CI: 0.82-0.87), significantly greater than PESI (0.68, 0.60-0.76). In the validation sample, POMPE-C had an AUC of 0.86 (0.78-0.93). No patient with POMPE-C estimate †5% died within 30 days (0/50, 0-7%), whereas 10/13 (77%, 46-95%) with POMPE-C estimate > 50% died within 30 days. Conclusion In patients with active cancer and PE, POMPE-C demonstrated good prognostic accuracy for 30 day mortality and better performance than PESI. If validated in a large sample, POMPE-C may provide a quantitative basis to decide treatment options for PE discovered during cancer staging and with advanced cancer
Supersymmetry with a Chargino NLSP and Gravitino LSP
We demonstrate that the lightest chargino can be lighter than the lightest
neutralino in supersymmetric models with Dirac gaugino masses as well as within
a curious parameter region of the MSSM. Given also a light gravitino, such as
from low scale supersymmetry breaking, this mass hierarchy leads to an unusual
signal where every superpartner cascades down to a chargino that decays into an
on-shell W and a gravitino, possibly with a macroscopic chargino track. We
clearly identify the region of parameters where this signal can occur. We find
it is generic in the context of the R-symmetric supersymmetric standard model,
whereas it essentially only occurs in the MSSM when sign(M1) is not equal to
sign(M2) = sign(\mu) and tan(beta) is small. We briefly comment on the search
strategies for this signal at the LHC.Comment: 27 pages and 16 figure
Disorder and thermally driven vortex-lattice melting in La{2-x}Sr{x}CuO{4} crystals
Magnetization measurements in La{2-x}Sr{x}CuO{4} crystals indicate vortex
order-disorder transition manifested by a sharp kink in the second
magnetization peak. The transition field exhibits unique temperature
dependence, namely a strong decrease with temperature in the entire measured
range. This behavior rules out the conventional interpretation of a
disorder-driven transition into an entangled vortex solid phase. It is shown
that the transition in La{2-x}Sr{x}CuO{4} is driven by both thermally- and
disorder-induced fluctuations, resulting in a pinned liquid state. We conclude
that vortex solid-liquid, solid-solid and solid to pinned-liquid transitions
are different manifestations of the same thermodynamic order-disorder
transition, distinguished by the relative contributions of thermal and
disorder-induced fluctuations.Comment: To be published in phys. Rev. B Rapid Com
Photo-z optimization for measurements of the BAO radial direction
Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) in the radial direction offer a method to
directly measure the Universe expansion history, and to set limits to space
curvature when combined to the angular BAO signal. In addition to spectroscopic
surveys, radial BAO might be measured from accurate enough photometric
redshifts obtained with narrow-band filters. We explore the requirements for a
photometric survey using Luminous Red Galaxies (LRG) to competitively measure
the radial BAO signal and discuss the possible systematic errors of this
approach. If LRG were a highly homogeneous population, we show that the photo-z
accuracy would not substantially improve by increasing the number of filters
beyond , except for a small fraction of the sources detected at high
signal-to-noise, and broad-band filters would suffice to achieve the target
for measuring radial BAO. Using the LRG spectra
obtained from SDSS, we find that the spectral variability of LRG substantially
worsens the achievable photometric redshift errors, and that the optimal system
consists of 30 filters of width . A
is generally necessary at the filters on the red side of the
break to reach the target photometric accuracy. We estimate that a
5-year survey in a dedicated telescope with etendue in excess of 60 would be necessary to obtain a high enough density of galaxies to
measure radial BAO with sufficiently low shot noise up to . We
conclude that spectroscopic surveys have a superior performance than
photometric ones for measuring BAO in the radial direction.Comment: Replaced with minor editorial comments and one extra figure. Results
