Duration of magnetic field(s) acting on meteorite parent body(s)
An overview is presented on the efforts being made to estimate the time that the magnetic field(s) existed and acted on meteorite parent bodies. The basic premise is that if a sample exhibits a low K-Ar age, it is the requisite amount of Ar-40. This assumption is applied to a preliminary analysis of the Farmington chondrite
Constraints of magnetic field which magnetized the Farmington meteorite parant body
Analysis indicates the following: (1) the parent body of the Farmington meteorite experienced sufficient heating (probably from shock accompanying a major collision occurring 520 million years ago) to erase the record of any magnetization acquired prior to that event; therefore, (2)the observed magnetization in the Farmington meteorite must have been acquired after the collision; and (3)shockproduced magnetization is unlikely, because of the finite cooling time indicated by the burial depth of approximately several meters. The possibility of shock or irradiation-produced magnetizations is proposed as an experimental study, even though neither appears likely to have produced the magnetic field which produced the magnetization in the parent body of the Farmington meteorite
Magnetism in meteorites
An overview is presented of magnetism in meteorites. A glossary of magnetism terminology followed by discussion of the various techniques used for magnetism studies in meteorites are included. The generalized results from use of these techniques by workers in the field are described. A brief critical analysis is offered
Prediction of unsteady aerodynamic loadings caused by leading edge and trailing edge control surface motions in subsonic compressible flow: Computer program description
A digital computer program has been developed to calculate unsteady loadings caused by motions of lifting surfaces with leading edge or trailing edge controls based on the subsonic kernel function approach. The pressure singularities at hinge line and side edges have been extracted analytically as a preliminary step to solving the integral equation by collocation. The program calculates generalized aerodynamic forces for user supplied deflection modes. Optional intermediate output includes pressure at an array of points, and sectional generalized forces. From one to six controls on the half span can be accommodated
Lines to time:A poem by V. Penelope Pelizzon
This essay explores a modern American poem-its verse form, imagery, diction, and rhythm, and, in particular, its cultural echoes, resonances, and overtones. I examine the poem's explicit invocation of Apelles and crow mythology, but I also show that the implicit context from which it arises, and the one that allows it to speak with the greatest fullness and power, is work that Shakespeare wrote or published between 1606 and 1609. This context allows us to see that, at the heart of the poem, lies the Shakespearean and Platonic analogy between the creation of children and the creation of intellectual work
Thermoelastic analysis of solar cell arrays and their material properties
Announced report discusses experimental test program in which five different solar cell array designs were evaluated by subjecting them to 60 thermal cycles from minus 190 deg to 0.0 deg. Results indicate that solder-coated cells combined with Kovar n-interconnectors and p-interconnectors are more durable under thermal loading than other configurations

Influence of absorbed water on the dielectric properties and glass-transition temperature of silica-filled epoxy nanocomposites
Work on dielectric spectroscopy of epoxy resin filled with nano-SiO2 at different relative humidities and temperatures is reported. Above the glass-transition temperature (Tg), dc-like imperfect charge transport (QDC or LFD) dominates the low frequency dielectric spectrum. Another mid-frequency relaxation process was found in the non-dried composites. Water also induces glass-transition temperature decreases, which can be measured both by dielectric spectroscopy and DSC. Both theory and experiment demonstrated that a higher water content could exist in nanocomposites than unfilled epoxy suggesting a bigger free volume when nanostructured. In our system, the hydrophilic surface of silica is likely to cause water to surround and lead to delamination of the epoxy from SiO2. This is a potential mechanical and dielectric weakness in the nanocomposites, which may lead to an ageing phenomenon. Hydrophobic surface group may reduce the water adsorption in nanocomposites
Modem design for a MOBILESAT terminal
The implementation is described of a programmable digital signal processor based system, designed for use as a test bed in the development of a digital modem, codec, and channel simulator. Code was written to configure the system as a 5600 bps or 6600 bps QPSK modem. The test bed is currently being used in an experiment to evaluate the performance of digital speech over shadowed channels in the Australian mobile satellite (MOBILESAT) project
Sail film materials and supporting structure for a solar sail, a preliminary design, volume 4
Solar sailing technology was examined in relation to a mission to rendezvous with Halley's Comet. Development of an ultra-light, highly reflecting material system capable of operating at high solar intensity for long periods of time was emphasized. Data resulting from the sail materials study are reported. Topics covered include: basic film; coatings and thermal control; joining and handling; system performance; and supporting structures assessment for the heliogyro
