Sport fishing is one of the fastest growing leisure categories in today's world. In Brazil it is also practiced as a sport or leisure, noncommercial purposes. However, few studies are conducted in order to manage this activity in a sustainable manner. This study aimed to analyze sport fishing, practiced the "Fisherman’s Deck" (Santos, SP, Brazil), describing their biological characteristics and the socioeconomic profile of its participants. We interviewed 150 fishermen, aged between 12 and 82 years, 85% male. The majority (56%) has a college degree and resides near the fishing spot. The target species are swordfish (Trichiurus lepturus), bass (Centropomus spp.), Hake (Cynoscion spp.), betara (Menticirrhus americanus), corvina (Micropogonias furnieri) and hake-yellow (Macrodon atricauda). Three types of fishing, bottom fishing, surface and crab were identified. Fishermen indicated that fish stocks have declined due to increased commercial fishing and pollution. Each fishery lasted on average 5.0 (S.D.=2.1) hours and captured 850,8g (S.D.=962.5) g / angler / day. The estimated catch for the study period was 1314.8 (S.D.=1919.1) kg, representing less than 3% of fish landed by commercial fishing. Therefore, sport fishing from "Fisherman’s Deck" causes low impact to regional fish stocks

Recreational fishing is one of the most popular leisure activities in the world and, in Brazil, it is a relevant socioeconomic activity in several coastal populations. The management of this practice must conciliate traditional knowledge, scientific research, and the demands involved in using space and fishing resources to generate employment and income, without harming biodiversity. This article presents an analysis of recreational fishing in the Barra do Una Sustainable Development Reserve by primary and bibliographic data and results of participatory workshops, aiming to generate information and discussions relevant to fisheries management integrated in the Juréia-Itatins Mosaic of Conservation Units, in the south coast of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. The main services provided to recreational fishing and structured in the territory are the activities of fishing guides or pilots, trading live baits, and renting boats, while, accommodation and food still require organization. Centropomus parallelus and C. undecimalis are target species, and the profile of practitioners – systematized by the scientific literature – demonstrates certain patterns related to age, fishing time, and place of origin. As for the use of space, of the 40 identified fishing spots, only nine used by recreational fishermen overlap with the fishing grounds used by artisanal fishermen, which may indicate little competition for resources between the fishing categories. Scientific research, the engagement of managers, and the participation of the local community contributed to the organization of recreational fishing in the Barra do Una Sustainable Development Reserve, demonstrating that participatory management promoted interaction between the different users of fishing resources, favoring the development of recreational fishing, and meeting the socioeconomic and cultural expectations of the local community

The development of recreational fishing can provide social and economic benefits to local populations. However, it generates negative impacts on the environment if there is no effective management. This research aimed to analyze the contributions of local ecological knowledge to the planning of recreational fishing and conservation of snooks in the Barra do Una Sustainable Development Reserve, Peruíbe/SP. Twenty-seven artisanal fishers involved in recreational fishing were interviewed through semi-structured questionnaires containing questions about socio-economic data, fishing activity, local ecological knowledge, and relationships with recreational fishing, especially regarding services and aspects related to the conservation of snooks. Recreational fishing has become an income alternative for the artisanal fishing families of Barra do Una, who apply their knowledge of fishing resources in this new practice. Recreational fishing in RDS Barra do Una has potential as a leisure activity and income generation through activities associated with fishing tourism. This feature is quite representative both for tourists visiting the region and for residents themselves. However, it is clear the need to organize this activity to reach its potential for environmental conservation and local socio-economic development. Thus, management measures were proposed based on local ecological knowledge of artisanal fishermen’s current legislation and technical information already available for the sector

Seascape genomics and phylogeography of the sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus)

Permeable phylogeographic barriers characterize the vast open ocean, boosting gene flow and counteracting population differentiation and speciation of widely distributed and migratory species. However, many widely distributed species consists of distinct populations throughout their distribution, evidencing that our understanding of how the marine environment triggers population and species divergence are insufficient. The sailfish is a circumtropical and highly migratory billfish that inhabits warm and productive areas. Despite its ecological and socioeconomic importance as a predator and fishery resource, the species is threatened by overfishing, requiring innovative approaches to improve their management and conservation status. Thus, we presented a novel high-quality reference genome for the species and applied a seascape genomics approach to understand how marine environmental features may promote local adaptation and how it affects gene flow between populations. We delimit two populations between the Atlantic and Indo-Western Pacific oceans and detect outlier loci correlated with sea surface temperature, salinity, oxygen, and chlorophyll concentrations. However, the most significant explanatory factor that explains the differences between populations was isolation by distance. Despite recent population drops, the sailfish populations are not inbred. For billfishes in general, genome-wide heterozygosity was found to be relatively low compared to other marine fishes, evidencing the need to counteract overfishing effects. In addition, in a climate change scenario, management agencies must implement state-of-the-art sequencing methods, consider our findings in their management plans, and monitor genome-wide heterozygosity over time to improve sustainable fisheries and the long-term viability of its populations.LA/P/0101/2020info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    No full text
This study was conducted in three communities of artisanal fishermen from Ilhabela, located on the northern coast of São Paulo, Brazil. The objective was to analyze the preferences, taboos and medicinal indications of fish and thus representing one of the interactions of fishermen with fish stocks. Data collection was conducted through interviews with the aid of semi-structured questionnaires. We interviewed 25 families, 29 residents in three communities studied during our fieldwork for data collection. Five interviews were done in Jabaquara Beach, 6 in Fome Beach and 14 Serraria Beach. During the interviews, 18 species were cited as preferred for consumption, 11 species considered to be taboo (food prohibited), 5 species were cited as avoided as food, and 4 species indicated in case of illness. The families of fishermen prefer to consume finfish and do not consume puffer fish, the latter probably due to its toxic characteristic. Fish such as little tunny, largehead hairtail, shark, serra mackerel and king mackerel are avoided by unhealthy people and in cases of wounds, inflammation, pregnancy and postpartum. Other fish, such as sea chubs, silver porgy, bluefish and grouper are reported as medicinal in these situations. Aspects related to fish consumption are part of the knowledge of fishermen and their families and provide a wealth of information that combined to biological information is useful for the conservation of fishery resources. Data such as those presented in this study, regarding the use of aquatic animals for treatment of diseases, could serve as a basis for future studies on substances that contain active elements in curing diseases
