Statistical properties of online auctions
We characterize the statistical properties of a large number of online
auctions run on eBay. Both stationary and dynamic properties, like
distributions of prices, number of bids etc., as well as relations between
these quantities are studied. The analysis of the data reveals surprisingly
simple distributions and relations, typically of power-law form. Based on these
findings we introduce a simple method to identify suspicious auctions that
could be influenced by a form of fraud known as shill bidding. Furthermore the
influence of bidding strategies is discussed. The results indicate that the
observed behavior is related to a mixture of agents using a variety of

Bose-Fermi mixtures in 1D optical superlattices
The zero temperature phase diagram of binary boson-fermion mixtures in
two-colour superlattices is investigated. The eigenvalue problem associated
with the Bose-Fermi-Hubbard Hamiltonian is solved using an exact numerical
diagonalization technique, supplemented by an adaptive basis truncation scheme.
The physically motivated basis truncation allows to access larger systems in a
fully controlled and very flexible framework. Several experimentally relevant
observables, such as the matter-wave interference pattern and the
condensatefraction, are investigated in order to explore the rich phase
diagram. At symmetric half filling a phase similar to the Mott-insulating phase
in a commensurate purely bosonic system is identified and an analogy to recent
experiments is pointed out. Furthermore a phase of complete localization of the
bosonic species generated by the repulsive boson-fermion interaction is
identified. These localized condensates are of a different nature than the
genuine Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices.Comment: 18 pages, 9 figure
Persistence of brucellosis in pastoral systems
Regarded as a highly contagious, zoonotic disease with worldwide distribution, brucellosis is endemic in many countries and settings and is responsible for a considerable economic and health-related burden. Limited information is available on the persistence and prevalence of brucellosis in pastoral communities, due to the difficulty in gathering information and to their mobility. However, since these communities are economically and culturally dependent on livestock, it is important to further determine the cause of persistent disease and develop possible methods for its management. The two main objectives of this paper are to review the literature, identifying various epidemiological and social factors that affect the persistence of brucellosis in pastoral ecosystems, and determine prevalence estimates within these communities. The general trend of the summarised studies indicates low-level, relatively stable transmission of brucellosis in pastoral areas, when compared to transmission in intensive and semi-intensive peri-urban production systems. A formal mathematical analysis can be undertaken using matrix models or coupled differential equations. This allows an examination of the various conditions under which the number of diseased, infected or exposed animals remains stable. The authors examined an existing mathematical differential equation model for brucellosis in Mongolia for its equilibrium conditions and found it reasonably robust, though clearly more data are needed to estimate threshold densities for brucellosis transmission in other regions of the world. However, the results indicate the importance of livestock demographic determinants for brucellosis persistence. The paper concludes that brucellosis remains largely persistent in pastoral areas of the world, despite (varying) control efforts. Plans to control brucellosis in pastoral settings should include ecological considerations, such as sustaining ecosystem services in pastoral areas. This approach would include placing limitations on livestock stocking density, land reform, improved governance and integrated social and economic development
Bounds for graph regularity and removal lemmas
We show, for any positive integer k, that there exists a graph in which any
equitable partition of its vertices into k parts has at least ck^2/\log^* k
pairs of parts which are not \epsilon-regular, where c,\epsilon>0 are absolute
constants. This bound is tight up to the constant c and addresses a question of
Gowers on the number of irregular pairs in Szemer\'edi's regularity lemma.
In order to gain some control over irregular pairs, another regularity lemma,
known as the strong regularity lemma, was developed by Alon, Fischer,
Krivelevich, and Szegedy. For this lemma, we prove a lower bound of
wowzer-type, which is one level higher in the Ackermann hierarchy than the
tower function, on the number of parts in the strong regularity lemma,
essentially matching the upper bound. On the other hand, for the induced graph
removal lemma, the standard application of the strong regularity lemma, we find
a different proof which yields a tower-type bound.
We also discuss bounds on several related regularity lemmas, including the
weak regularity lemma of Frieze and Kannan and the recently established regular
approximation theorem. In particular, we show that a weak partition with
approximation parameter \epsilon may require as many as
2^{\Omega(\epsilon^{-2})} parts. This is tight up to the implied constant and
solves a problem studied by Lov\'asz and Szegedy.Comment: 62 page
Density functional approach for inhomogeneous star polymers
We propose microscopic density functional theory for inhomogeneous star
polymers. Our approach is based on fundamental measure theory for hard spheres,
and on Wertheim's first- and second-order perturbation theory for the
interparticle connectivity. For simplicity we consider a model in which all the
arms are of the same length, but our approach can be easily extended to the

Volatile Composition and Outgassing in C/2018 Y1 (IWAMOTO): Extending Detection Limits for High-Resolution IR Cometary Spectroscopy at the NASA-IRTF
We used iSHELL, the powerful high-resolution ( /~ 40,000) cross-dispersed IR spectrograph at the NASA-IRTF to measure the native ice composition and outgassing of moderately bright, long-period comet C/2018 Y1 (Iwamoto) (hereafter Y1) within weeks of its discovery. We measured production rates for H2O, and production rates and abundance ratios relative to H2O for eight trace molecules, including the most complete measure of cometary CH4 achieved to date. Compared with mean abundances measured among comets, our study revealed enriched CH3OH and C2H6 yet depleted CO and C2H2, perhaps indicating highly efficient H- atom addition on interstellar grains prior to their incorporation into the nucleus. The combined high spectral resolving power and broad spectral coverage of iSHELL allowed characterizing cometary composition using only three instrument settings, and its long-slit coverage allowed comparing the spatial distributions of molecular emissions and dust continuum
Magnetic susceptibility of insulators from first principles
We present an {\it ab initio} approach for the computation of the magnetic
susceptibility of insulators. The approach is applied to compute
in diamond and in solid neon using density functional theory in the local
density approximation, obtaining good agreement with experimental data. In
