    The role of endogenous and exogenous mechanisms in the formation of R&D networks

    We develop an agent-based model of strategic link formation in Research and Development (R&D)networks. Empirical evidence has shown that the growth of these networks is driven by mechanisms whichare both endogenous to the system (that is, depending on existing alliances patterns) and exogenous (that is, driven by an exploratory search for newcomer firms). Extant research to date has not investigated both mechanisms simultaneously in a comparative manner. To overcome this limitation, we develop a general modeling framework to shed light on the relative importance of these two mechanisms. We test our model against a comprehensive dataset, listing cross-country and cross-sectoral R&D alliances from 1984 to 2009. Our results show that by fitting only three macroscopic properties of the network topology, this framework is able to reproduce a number of micro-level measures, including the distributions of degree, local clustering, path length and component size, and the emergence of network clusters. Furthermore, by estimating the link probabilities towards newcomers and established firms from the data, we find that endogenous mechanisms are predominant over the exogenous ones in the network formation, thus quantifying the importance of existing structures in selecting partner firms

    Sex-differential genetic effect of phosphodiesterase 4D (PDE4D) on carotid atherosclerosis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The phosphodiesterase 4D (PDE4D) gene was reported as a susceptibility gene to stroke. The genetic effect might be attributed to its role in modulating the atherogenic process in the carotid arteries. Using carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) and plaque index as phenotypes, the present study sought to determine the influence of this gene on subclinical atherosclerosis.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Carotid ultrasonography was performed on 1013 stroke-free subjects who participated in the health screening programs (age 52.6 ± 12.2; 47.6% men). Genotype distribution was compared among the high-risk (plaque index ≥ 4), low-risk (index = 1-3), and reference (index = 0) groups. We analyzed continuous IMT data and further dichotomized IMT data using mean plus one standard deviation as the cutoff level. Because the plaque prevalence and IMT values displayed a notable difference between men and women, we carried out sex-specific analyses in addition to analyzing the overall data. Rs702553 at the PDE4D gene was selected because it conferred a risk for young stroke in our previous report. Previous young stroke data (190 cases and 211 controls) with an additional 532 control subjects without ultrasonic data were shown as a cross-validation for the genetic effect.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In the overall analyses, the rare homozygote of rs702553 led to an OR of 3.1 (p = 0.034) for a plaque index ≥ 4. When subjects were stratified by sex, the genetic effect was only evident in men but not in women. Comparing male subjects with plaque index ≥ 4 and those with plaque index = 0, the TT genotype was over-represented (27.6% vs. 13.4%, p = 0.008). For dichotomized IMT data in men, the TT genotype had an OR of 2.1 (p = 0.032) for a thicker IMT at the common carotid artery compared with the (AA + AT) genotypes. In women, neither IMT nor plaque index was associated with rs702553. Similarly, SNP rs702553 was only significant in young stroke men (OR = 1.8, p = 0.025) but not in women (p = 0.27).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The present study demonstrates a sex-differential effect of PDE4D on IMT, plaque index and stroke, which highlights its influence on various aspects of atherogenesis.</p

    Managing the climate commons at the nexus of ecology, behaviour and economics

    Sustainably managing coupled ecological–economic systems requires not only an understanding of the environmental factors that affect them, but also knowledge of the interactions and feedback cycles that operate between resource dynamics and activities attributable to human intervention. The socioeconomic dynamics, in turn, call for an investigation of the behavioural drivers behind human action. We argue that a multidisciplinary approach is needed in order to tackle the increasingly pressing and intertwined environmental challenges faced by modern societies. Academic contributions to climate change policy have been constrained by methodological and terminological differences, so we discuss how programmes aimed at cross-disciplinary education and involvement in governance may help to unlock scholars' potential to propose new solutions

    A single-cell survey of the small intestinal epithelium

    Intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) absorb nutrients, respond to microbes, provide barrier function and help coordinate immune responses. We profiled 53,193 individual epithelial cells from mouse small intestine and organoids, and characterized novel subtypes and their gene signatures. We showed unexpected diversity of hormone-secreting enteroendocrine cells and constructed their novel taxonomy. We distinguished between two tuft cell subtypes, one of which expresses the epithelial cytokine TSLP and CD45 (Ptprc), the pan-immune marker not previously associated with non-hematopoietic cells. We also characterized how cell-intrinsic states and cell proportions respond to bacterial and helminth infections. Salmonella infection caused an increase in Paneth cells and enterocytes abundance, and broad activation of an antimicrobial program. In contrast, Heligmosomoides polygyrus caused an expansion of goblet and tuft cell populations. Our survey highlights new markers and programs, associates sensory molecules to cell types, and uncovers principles of gut homeostasis and response to pathogens

    Accuracy and Reliability of 3D Imaging for Facial Movement Evaluation: Validation of the VECTRA H1

    Background:. Three-dimensional imaging can be used to obtain objective assessments of facial morphology that is useful in a variety of clinical settings. The VECTRA H1 is unique in that it is relatively inexpensive, handheld, and does not require standardized environmental conditions for image capture. Although it provides accurate measurements when imaging relaxed facial expressions, the clinical evaluation of many disorders involves the assessment of facial morphology when performing facial movements. The aim of this study was to assess the accuracy and reliability of the VECTRA H1, specifically when imaging facial movement. Methods:. The accuracy, intrarater, and interrater reliability of the VECTRA H1 were assessed when imaging four facial expressions: eyebrow lift, smile, snarl, and lip pucker. Fourteen healthy adult subjects had the distances between 13 fiducial facial landmarks measured at rest and the terminal point of each of the four movements by digital caliper and by the VECTRA H1. Intraclass correlation and Bland–Altman limits of agreement were used to determine agreement between measures. The agreement between measurements obtained by five different reviewers was evaluated by intraclass correlation to determine interrater reliability. Results:. Median correlation between digital caliper and VECTRA H1 measurements ranged from 0.907 (snarl) to 0.921 (smile). Median correlation was very good for both intrarater (0.960–0.975) and interrater reliability (0.997–0.999). The mean absolute error between modalities, and both within and between raters was less than 2 mm for all movements tested. Conclusion:. The VECTRA H1 met acceptable standards for the assessment of facial morphology when imaging facial movements
