Pitfalls in vertical arrangements
A popular way of obtaining essential inputs requires the establishment of an input production joint venture (IPJV) in the upstream (U) section of the vertical chain of production by firms competing and selling final goods in the downstream (D) section of the vertical chain. In spite of the apparently simple arrangement there are many possible governances for the management of the IPJV according to the ownership structure and to the degree of delegation granted to the IPJV by parent firms. We explore the best sustainable governance arrangement for the IPJV. We address this question in a duopoly framwork and we find a large area of impossible vertical arrangements associated with technological asymmtery. The most likely governance of the vertical arrangment associated to the IPJV is total independence.
Spinons as Composite Fermions
We show that gauge invariant composites in the fermionic realization of
conformal field theory explicitly exhibit the holomorphic
factorization of the corresponding WZW primaries. In the case we show
that the holomorphic sector realizes the spinon algebra, thus
allowing the classification of the chiral Fock space in terms of semionic
quasi-particle excitations created by the composite fermions.Comment: SU(N)_1 case included. Final version to appear in Mod. Phys. Lett. A.

Diagnosing order by disorder in quantum spin systems
In this paper we study the frustrated J1-J2 quantum Heisenberg model on the
square lattice for J2 > 2J1, in a magnetic field. In this regime the classical
system is known to have a degenerate manifold of lowest energy configurations,
where standard thermal order by disorder occurs. In order to study its quantum
version we use a path integral formulation in terms of coherent states. We show
that the classical degeneracy in the plane transverse to the magnetic field is
lifted by quantum fluctuations. Collinear states are then selected, in a
similar pattern to that set by thermal order by disorder, leaving a Z2
degeneracy. A careful analysis reveals a purely quantum mechanical effect given
by the tunneling between the two minima selected by fluctuations. The effective
description contains two planar (XY -like) fields conjugate to the total
magnetization and the difference of the two sublattice magnetizations. Disorder
in either or both of these fields produces the locking of their conjugate
observables. Furthermore, within this scenario we argue that the quantum state
is close to a product state.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure
Religious attitudes and home bias: theory and evidence from a pilot study
This paper examines the relationship between religion and home bias. We propose a simple theoretical framework that suggests that countries interacting via their representative individuals might show a certain degree of religion-driven international altruism that in turn affects trade. We test these predictions exploiting data from a survey on religious attitudes and individuals' preferences over consumption of home-produced versus foreign goods that we designed and carried out in 15 different countries. We find evidence that religious openness and home bias are negatively correlated. This appears to provide some support to the hypothesis that religious openness, through trust and altruism, may have a pro-trade effect.
Equilibrium and Disorder-induced behavior in Quantum Light-Matter Systems
We analyze equilibrium properties of coupled-doped cavities described by the
Jaynes-Cummings- Hubbard Hamiltonian. In particular, we characterize the
entanglement of the system in relation to the insulating-superfluid phase
transition. We point out the existence of a crossover inside the superfluid
phase of the system when the excitations change from polaritonic to purely
photonic. Using an ensemble statistical approach for small systems and
stochastic-mean-field theory for large systems we analyze static disorder of
the characteristic parameters of the system and explore the ground state
induced statistics. We report on a variety of glassy phases deriving from the
hybrid statistics of the system. On-site strong disorder induces insulating
behavior through two different mechanisms. For disorder in the light-matter
detuning, low energy cavities dominate the statistics allowing the excitations
to localize and bunch in such cavities. In the case of disorder in the light-
matter coupling, sites with strong coupling between light and matter become
very significant, which enhances the Mott-like insulating behavior. Inter-site
(hopping) disorder induces fluidity and the dominant sites are strongly coupled
to each other.Comment: about 10 pages, 12 figure
Spin-phonon induced magnetic order in Kagome ice
We study the effects of lattice deformations on the Kagome spin ice, with
Ising spins coupled by nearest neighbor exchange and long range dipolar
interactions, in the presence of in-plane magnetic fields. We describe the
lattice energy according to the Einstein model, where each site distortion is
treated independently. Upon integration of lattice degrees of freedom,
effective quadratic spin interactions arise. Classical MonteCarlo simulations
are performed on the resulting model, retaining up to third neighbor
interactions, under different directions of the magnetic field. We find that,
as the effect of the deformation is increased, a rich plateau structure appears
in the magnetization curves.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure
Explicit connection between conformal field theory and 2+1 Chern-Simons theory
We give explicit field theoretical representations for the observables of 2+1
dimensional Chern-Simons theory in terms of gauge invariant composites of 2D
WZW fields. To test our identification we compute some basic Wilson loop
correlators reobtaining known results.Comment: 13 pages, Latex file. To appear in Mod.Phys.Lett.
