    Gas turbine combined cycle start-up and stress evaluation: A simplified dynamic approach

    The main topic of this work is the development and validation of a simplified approach for the dynamic analysis of a Gas Turbine Combined Cycle (GTCC), with a particular focus on start-up procedure and associated mechanical stresses on the steam turbine (ST). The currently deregulated energy market led GTCC to undergo frequent startups, a condition often not considered during plant design. Moreover, the time required for the start-up is crucial under an economical viewpoint, though it is constrained by mechanical stresses imposed to thick components by thermal gradients. The framework proposed in this work aims to improve the accessibility to simulation software by applying commonly used office suite \ue2\u80\u93 Microsoft Excel/Visual Basic \ue2\u80\u93 with acceptable reduction in accuracy. Simplicity of model allow fast computation and its exploitation can be pursued by non-qualified plant operators. The obtained tool can be than adopted to support decision process during plant operations. The developed tool has been validated for a hot start-up against field measurements supplied by Tirreno Power S.p.A. Italy. Data are recorded through control and monitoring sensors of a 390 MW multi-shaft combined cycle based on the GT AEN94.3 A4 frame, but the results can be easily generalized to other layouts.     Robot kinematic structure classification from time series of visual data

    In this paper we present a novel algorithm to solve the robot kinematic structure identification problem. Given a time series of data, typically obtained processing a set of visual observations, the proposed approach identifies the ordered sequence of links associated to the kinematic chain, the joint type interconnecting each couple of consecutive links, and the input signal influencing the relative motion. Compared to the state of the art, the proposed algorithm has reduced computational costs, and is able to identify also the joints' type sequence

    Traffic classification has received increasing attention in the last years. It aims at offering the ability to automatically recognize the application that has generated a given stream of packets from the direct and passive observation of the individual packets, or stream of packets, flowing in the network. This ability is instrumental to a number of activities that are of extreme interest to carriers, Internet service providers and network administrators in general. Indeed, traffic classification is the basic block that is required to enable any traffic management operations, from differentiating traffic pricing and treatment (e.g., policing, shaping, etc.), to security operations (e.g., firewalling, filtering, anomaly detection, etc.). Up to few years ago, almost any Internet application was using well-known transport layer protocol ports that easily allowed its identification. More recently, the number of applications using random or non-standard ports has dramatically increased (e.g. Skype, BitTorrent, VPNs, etc.). Moreover, often network applications are configured to use well-known protocol ports assigned to other applications (e.g. TCP port 80 originally reserved for Web traffic) attempting to disguise their presence. For these reasons, and for the importance of correctly classifying traffic flows, novel approaches based respectively on packet inspection, statistical and machine learning techniques, and behavioral methods have been investigated and are becoming standard practice. In this chapter, we discuss the main trend in the field of traffic classification and we describe some of the main proposals of the research community. We complete this chapter by developing two examples of behavioral classifiers: both use supervised machine learning algorithms for classifications, but each is based on different features to describe the traffic.     Mining metagenomic whole genome sequences revealed subdominant but constant Lactobacillus population in the human gut microbiota

    The genus Lactobacillus includes over 215 species that colonize plants, foods, sewage and the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of humans and animals. In the GIT, Lactobacillus population can be made by true inhabitants or by bacteria occasionally ingested with fermented or spoiled foods, or with probiotics. This study longitudinally surveyed Lactobacillus species and strains in the feces of a healthy subject through whole genome sequencing (WGS) data-mining, in order to identify members of the permanent or transient populations. In three time-points (0, 670 and 700 d), 58 different species were identified, 16 of them being retrieved for the first time in human feces. L. rhamnosus, L. ruminis, L. delbrueckii, L. plantarum, L. casei and L. acidophilus were the most represented, with estimated amounts ranging between 6 and 8 Log (cells g-1), while the other were detected at 4 or 5 Log (cells g-1). 86 Lactobacillus strains belonging to 52 species were identified. 43 seemingly occupied the GIT as true residents, since were detected in a time span of almost 2 years in all the three samples or in 2 samples separated by 670 or 700 d. As a whole, a stable community of lactobacilli was disclosed, with wide and understudied biodiversity

    Guidelines for the monitoring of Rosalia alpina

    Rosalia alpina (Linnaeus, 1758) is a large longhorn beetle (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) which is protected by the Habitats Directive and which typically inhabits beech forests characterised by the presence of mature, dead (or moribund) and sun-exposed trees. A revision of the current knowledge on systematics, ecology and conservation of R. alpina is reported. The research was carried out as part of the LIFE MIPP project which aims to find a standard monitoring method for saproxylic beetles protected in Europe. For monitoring this species, different methods were tested and compared in two areas of the Apennines, utilising wild trees, logs and tripods (artificially built with beech woods), all potentially suitable for the reproduction of the species. Even if all methods succeeded in the survey of the target species, these results showed that the use of wild trees outperformed other methods. Indeed, the use of wild trees allowed more adults to be observed and required less intensive labour. However, monitoring the rosalia longicorn on wild trees has the main disadvantage that they can hardly be considered “standard sampling units”, as each tree may be differently attractive to adults. Our results demonstrated that the most important factors influencing the attraction of single trunks were wood volume, sun-exposure and decay stage.     Hypoglycemia is the result of defects/impairment in glucose homeostasis. The main etiological causes are metabolic and/or endocrine and/or other congenital disorders. Despite hypoglycemia is one of the most common emergencies in neonatal age and childhood, no consensus on the definition and diagnostic work-up exists yet. Aims of this review are to present the current age-related definitions of hypoglycemia in neonatal-pediatric age, to offer a concise and practical overview of its main causes and management and to discuss the current diagnostic-therapeutic approaches. Since a systematic and prompt approach to diagnosis and therapy is essential to prevent hypoglycemic brain injury and long-term neurological complications in children, a comprehensive diagnostic flowchart is also proposed

    Screening of environmental yeasts for the fermentative production of arabitol from lactose and glycerol

    Arabitol is a sugar alcohol, stereoisomer to xylitol, which is enlisted among the main target for biorefineries. It can serve as low calorie sweetener and as building block in the enantiopure synthesis of immunosuppressive glycolipids, herbicides, and drugs. Several studies described the fermentative production of arabitol by osmophilic yeasts, cultured with high concentrations of D-glucose. The utilization of cheaper carbon sources, such as glycerol or lactose, is of great interest for biorefinery implementation, but information on exploitation to arabitol production is still scarce. In the present study 50 yeasts belonging to 24 ascomycetous species were screened for the ability to grow and produce arabitol in presence of 80 g/L lactose or glycerol. Production from lactose was generally unsuccessful, the best producer being Kluyveromyces lactis WC 1401 with 0.94 g/L in 160 h. Production from glycerol was promising, with Zygosaccharomyces rouxii WC 1206, Pichia guilliermondii CBS 566, Hansenula anomala WC 1501, and Candida freyschussii ATCC 18737 yielding 3 to 4.5 g/L arabitol, with conversion yield (YP/S) ranging from 11 to 21.7%. Batch growth with high initial glycerol amount (160 g/L) resulted in higher production, with H. anomala WC 1501 yielding 10.0 g/L arabitol (YP/S = 12%) in 160 h. Preliminary bioreactor fermentations with H. anomala WC 1501 indicated that production is not growth associated and revealed some major parameters affecting production, such as the pH and the C:N ratio, that will be the target of following studies aiming at process optimization. Cultivation under controlled oxygenation (DOT = 20%) and pH (= 3.0) resulted in improvement in the performance of H. anomala WC 1501, yielding 16.1 g/L arabitol. Cultivation in a medium with high C:N ratio, lacking inorganic nitrogen yielded 17.1 g/L arabitol. Therefore, this strain was selected for the development of a fed-batch process, aiming to improve the efficiency of the biomass, generated in the growth phase, and increasing the production in the stationary phase

    Planning for assisted colonization of plants in a warming world

    Assisted colonization is one way of facilitating range shifts for species that are restricted in their ability to move in response to climate change. Here we conceptualize and apply a new decision framework for modelling assisted colonization of plant species prior to in situ realization. Three questions were examined: a) Is species translocation useful in a certain area? b) where, and c) how long will it be successful in the future? Applying our framework to Carex foetida in Italy at the core of its distribution and its southern edge revealed that assisted colonization could be successful in short-term (2010–2039) climate conditions, partially in medium (2040–2069) but not in long-term (2070–2099) scenarios. We show that, for some species, it is likely that assisted colonization would be successful in some portions of the recipient site under current and short-term climate conditions, but over the mid- and long-term, climate changes will make species translocation unsuccessful. The proposed decision framework can help identify species that will need different conservation actions (seed banks and/or botanical gardens) when assisted colonization is unlikely to be successful. Furthermore it has broad applicability, as it can support planning of assisted migration in mountainous areas in the face of climate change.University of Pavia

    Endobronchial metastasis: an epidemiologic and clinicopathologic study of 174 consecutive cases

    PURPOSE: Endobronchial metastases from extrapulmonary solid tumors are a rare event and currently available epidemiological and clinico-pathological data mainly derive from anecdotal case reports. METHODS: A series of 174 consecutive cases of endobronchial metastases from extrathoracic solid tumors were collected over a period of 18 years. Immunohistochemistry was performed in 115 cases. Complete imaging features were available in 81 patients, and analysis of the latency period between primitive tumor diagnosis and occurrence of endobronchial metastasis was obtained. RESULTS: Among all bronchoscopic examinations performed in the same period for malignancy, a mean of 5.6 cases per year consisted of endobronchial metastases (range 2-17 cases), with a statistically significant increase when comparing the periods 1992-2000 (65 cases, 37%) and 2001-2009 (109 cases, 63%) (p = 0.05). Overall, 4% of endobronchial biopsies for suspected malignancy disclosed an endobronchial metastasis from extrapulmonary tumor. Breast (52 cases, 30%), colorectal (42 cases, 24%), renal (14%), gastric (6%) and prostate (4.5%) cancers and melanoma (4.5%) were the most common metastatic neoplasms presenting as endobronchial mass. One-hundred fifty-four cases were identified after the primitive tumor diagnosis (metachronous cases, 89%), 11 cases were simultaneously evidenced in extrapulmonary and endobronchial sites (synchronous cases, 6%), while 9 occult metastatic cases (5%) first presented as endobronchial mass (anachronous cases). Overall, mean latency from extrapulmonary tumor diagnosis and endobronchial metastasis was 136 months (range, 1-300 months). The most frequent symptoms were dyspnea (23%), cough (15%) and haemoptysis (12%), while 26% of patients were totally asymptomatic. At radiology, 53% presented as multiple pulmonary nodules, while other cases presented as hilar and mediastinal mass, single peripheral nodule, atelectasis or pleural effusion. CONCLUSIONS: Endobronchial metastases from extrapulmonary tumors account for about 4% of all bronchoscopic biopsies performed for suspected malignancy and in 5% of the cases the metastasis is the first manifestation of the neoplasm
