Evaluation of Wildlife Reflectors in Reducing Vehicle-Deer Collisions on Indiana Interstate 80/90

The Indiana Department of Transportation is committed to reducing vehicle-deer collision incidents on the Indiana Interstate I-80/90 as well as on the other roads. Very few of the studies to reduce vehicle-deer collisions incorporated any sound and complete statistical design. Some states (California, Colorado, Maine, Ontario-Canada, Washington State and Wyoming) have found that the use of wildlife reflectors did not reduce vehicle-deer collisions. However, some other states (British Columbia-Canada, Iowa, Minnesota, Oregon, Washington State and Wisconsin) found that the use of wildlife reflectors did reduce vehicle-deer collisions. The main objective of this experimental study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the Reflectors in reducing vehicledeer collisions. The experimental design uses one-mile long road sections for each combination of reflector colors (red and blue/green), reflector spacing (30 m and 45 m), reflector design (single and dual reflectors), and median (one with and one without reflectors). In this design there are sixteen treatment combinations. A complete set of treatment combinations is called a replicate and the design had two replicates. Two one-mile control sections were placed at each end of each replicate. Data for the peak months of April, May, October and November was used in the data analyses. Poisson Regression models were used to analyze the data. No statistically significant differences among reflectors combinations or between reflectors and controls were found. When comparing all combined reflector sites with all combined control sites, the Poisson Regression Analyses indicate that the difference between the Poisson Mean (μ) of the all reflectors sections and all the control sections is statistically significant. The use of reflectors provides an expected reduction in deer-vehicle collisions of 19% with 95% confidence limits of 5% to 30%. Maximum reduction is associated with 100 ft spacing regardless of the reflector color, median with or without reflectors, single or double reflectors. The cost effectiveness of this reduction will be behind any decision to use reflectors to reduce vehicle-deer collisions

Design and Methods for a Pilot Study of a Phone-Delivered, Mindfulness-Based Intervention in Patients with Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators

Background. Meditation practices are associated with a reduction in adrenergic activity that may benefit patients with severe cardiac arrhythmias. This paper describes the design and methods of a pilot study testing the feasibility of a phone-delivered mindfulness-based intervention (MBI) for treatment of anxiety in patients with implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs). Design and Methods. Consecutive, clinically stable outpatients (n = 52) will be screened for study eligibility within a month of an ICD-related procedure or ICD shock and will be randomly assigned to MBI or to usual care. MBI patients will receive eight weekly individual phone sessions based on two mindfulness practices (awareness of breath and body scan) plus home practice with a CD for 20 minutes daily. Patients assigned to usual care will be offered the standard care planned by the hospital. Assessments will occur at baseline and at the completion of the intervention (between 9 and 12 weeks after randomization). The primary study outcome is feasibility; secondary outcomes include anxiety, mindfulness, and number of administered shocks during the intervention period. Conclusions. If proven feasible and effective, phone-delivered mindfulness-based interventions could improve psychological distress in ICD outpatients with serious cardiovascular conditions

Modification to the Luminosity Distance Redshift Relation in Modified Gravity Theories

We derive an expression for the luminosity distance as a function of redshift for a flat Robertson-Walker spacetime perturbed by arbitrary scalar perturbations possibly produced by a modified gravity theory with two different scalar perturbation potentials. Spiritual well-being may buffer psychological distress in patients with implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD)

Psychological distress is common in patients with implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) and has been associated with a worse prognosis. The authors examined whether spiritual well-being is associated with reduced psychological distress in patients with ICDs. The Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Spiritual Wellbeing (FACIT-SWB) questionnaire and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) were used to measure spiritual well-being and overall psychological distress. Multivariate linear regression was used to explore the relationship between these variables. The study sample included 46 ICD outpatients (32 M, 14 F; age range 43-83). An inverse association between HADS and FACIT-SWB scores was found, persisting after adjustment for demographics, anxiety/depression, medications, therapist support, and functional status (F = 0.001; β= -0.31, CI: -0.44, -0.19). In conclusion, spiritual well-being was independently associated with lower psychological distress in ICD outpatients. Spiritual well-being could act as a protective factor against psychological distress in these high-risk patients

Characterization of the Testicular Abnormality in 5a-Reductase Deficiency

The testes of five phenotypic women (from four families) with 5ª-reductase deficiency were studied. In one of the patients, the enzyme deficiency was similar in the testis and epididymis and in fibroblasts cultured from the labia majora. In testes from four of the patients, the concentrations of the 55ªreduced steroids dihydrotestosterone and 3ª-androstanediol were less than 10% of those in normal subjects. We conclude that the testis is involved in 55ª-reductase deficiency. Impaired spermatogenesis was evident in testicular biopsies from all five subjects, and in two, sperm production, as estimated in testicular homogenates, was less than 10% of normal. The extent to which spermatogenic arrest is due to 55ª-reductase deficiency or testicular maldescent is not clear

Determinants of Collaborative Leadership: Civic Engagement, Gender or Organizational Norms?

This analysis attempts to unravel competing explanations of collaborative leadership styles of state legislative committee chairs. Specifically, the paper considers the influence of community or volunteer experience, gender, and institutional variables. The data show that women chairs are more likely than their male peers to cite as valuable the leadership skills and experiences that they gain through community and volunteer experience. Compared to their male colleagues, women committee chairs on average also report a greater reliance on collaborative strategies in the management of their committees. Prior community or volunteer experience has little or no direct effect on collaborative styles. In contrast, institutional factors have a much stronger and countervailing influence. Legislative professionalization produces a strong negative effect on collaborative style. Results suggest that conformity to institutional norms may be a more compelling influence than prior community experience. The analysis also points to the gendered nature of organizational leadership with men's and women's styles showing different associations to style depending on the number and power of women in a legislature.Yeshttps://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/manuscript-submission-guideline

The Role of Informatics in Software Engineering: Literature Reviews, Agenda and Software Informatics

Literature reviews have been and are increasingly being merged with semi-automatic versions of bibliometrics and text analytics to extend library capabilities in the direction of performing informatics. Such extended capabilities allow special libraries to move in the direction of supporting and even performing informatic functions for bioinformatics or medical informatics. Recently a new subfield of informatics, software informatics, has been discussed that opens informatic opportunities for software engineering special libraries. The paper discusses a software engineering library that is using informatic techniques to support characterizations of customer demand landscapes that inform software engineering agenda. Sources analyzed go beyond published periodical literature to include organizational reports like budget justifications and, potentially, use of web harvesting. It is proposed that this use of informatic techniques is part of software informatics and because of the potential impact on how software is developed and used, may be part of software engineering as well

Are Hybrid Cars Worth All the Hype?: A Cost-Benefit Analysis

This classroom activity and presentation, which is five pages in length and provided by InnovATE at Palm Beach Community College, provides students with an opportunity to learn mathematical concepts by performing a cost-benefit analysis of purchasing a hybrid car.  This activity is taken from Ira Rosenthal's "Contextualized Intermediate Algebra Labs."  This document details the learning activity, which provides the student with data regarding the purchase price and fuel costs of a hybrid vehicle.  The student is then asked to perform various algebraic equations to determine whether or not the there is a cost-savings in purchasing and driving a hybrid car.  This resource is the student version of the activity; an instructor version with answers is also available in ATE Central and is entitled, "Are Hybrid Cars Worth All the Hype?, Instructor Version.&quot
