Transport and stirring induced by vortex formation
The purpose of this study is to analyse the transport and stirring of fluid that occurs owing to the formation and growth of a laminar vortex ring. Experimental data was collected upstream and downstream of the exit plane of a piston-cylinder apparatus by particle-image velocimetry. This data was used to compute Lagrangian coherent structures to demonstrate how fluid is advected during the transient process of vortex ring formation. Similar computations were performed from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) data, which showed qualitative agreement with the experimental results, although the CFD data provides better resolution in the boundary layer of the cylinder. A parametric study is performed to demonstrate how varying the piston-stroke length-to-diameter ratio affects fluid entrainment during formation. Additionally, we study how regions of fluid are stirred together during vortex formation to help establish a quantitative understanding of the role of vortical flows in mixing. We show that identification of the flow geometry during vortex formation can aid in the determination of efficient stirring. We compare this framework with a traditional stirring metric and show that the framework presented in this paper is better suited for understanding stirring/mixing in transient flow problems. Three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes computations of internal flows
Several incompressible Navier-Stokes solution methods for obtaining steady and unsteady solutions are discussed. Special attention is given to internal flows which involve distinctly different features from external flows. The characterisitcs of the flow solvers employing the method of pseudocompressibility and a fractional step method are briefly described. This discussion is limited to a primitive variable formulation in generalized curvilinear coordinates. Computed results include simple test cases and internal flow in the Space Shuttle main engine hot-gas manifold
Potential applications of computational fluid dynamics to biofluid analysis
Computational fluid dynamics was developed to the stage where it has become an indispensable part of aerospace research and design. In view of advances made in aerospace applications, the computational approach can be used for biofluid mechanics research. Several flow simulation methods developed for aerospace problems are briefly discussed for potential applications to biofluids, especially to blood flow analysis
Proposal for a cumulant-based Bell test for mesoscopic junctions
The creation and detection of entanglement in solid state electronics is of
fundamental importance for quantum information processing. We prove that
second-order quantum correlations can be always interpreted classically and
propose a general test of entanglement based on the violation of a classically
derived inequality for continuous variables by fourth-order quantum correlation
functions. Our scheme provides a way to prove the existence of entanglement in
a mesoscopic transport setup by measuring higher order cumulants without
requiring the additional assumption of a single charge detectionComment: 6 pages, 1 figure, detailed proof of weak positivity and Bell-type

The Geant4-DNA project
The Geant4-DNA project proposes to develop an open-source simulation software
based and fully included in the general-purpose Geant4 Monte Carlo simulation
toolkit. The main objective of this software is to simulate biological damages
induced by ionising radiation at the cellular and sub-cellular scale. This
project was originally initiated by the European Space Agency for the
prediction of deleterious effects of radiation that may affect astronauts
during future long duration space exploration missions. In this paper, the
Geant4-DNA collaboration presents an overview of the whole ongoing project,
including its most recent developments already available in the last Geant4
public release (9.3 BETA), as well as an illustration example simulating the
direct irradiation of a chromatin fibre. Expected extensions involving several
research domains, such as particle physics, chemistry and cellular and
molecular biology, within a fully interdiciplinary activity of the Geant4
collaboration are also discussed.Comment: presented by S. Incerti at the ASIA SIMULATION CONFERENCE 2009,

A Novel Histogram-Based Multi-Threshold Searching Algorithm for Multilevel Color Thresholding
[[abstract]]Image segmentation is an important preliminary process required in object tracking applications. This paper addresses the issue of unsupervised multi‐colour thresholding design for colour‐based multiple objects segmentation. Most of the current unsupervised colour thresholding techniques require adopting a supervised training algorithm or a cluster‐number decision algorithm to obtain optimal threshold values of each colour channel for a colour‐of‐interest. In this paper, a novel unsupervised multi‐threshold searching algorithm is proposed to automatically search the optimal threshold values for segmenting multiple colour objects. To achieve this, a novel ratio‐map image computation method is proposed to efficiently enhance the contrast between colour and non¬colour pixels. The Otsu’s method is then applied to the ratio‐map image to extract all colour objects from the image. Finally, a new histogram‐based multi‐threshold searching algorithm is developed to search the optimal upper‐bound and lower‐bound threshold values of hue, saturation and brightness components for each colour object. Experimental results show that the proposed method not only succeeds in separating all colour objects-of-interest in colour images, but also provides satisfactory colour thresholding results compared with an existing multilevel thresholding method.[[notice]]補正完畢[[incitationindex]]SCI[[incitationindex]]EI[[booktype]]電子版[[booktype]]紙
Physical approximations for the nonlinear evolution of perturbations in dark energy scenarios
The abundance and distribution of collapsed objects such as galaxy clusters
will become an important tool to investigate the nature of dark energy and dark
matter. Number counts of very massive objects are sensitive not only to the
equation of state of dark energy, which parametrizes the smooth component of
its pressure, but also to the sound speed of dark energy as well, which
determines the amount of pressure in inhomogeneous and collapsed structures.
Since the evolution of these structures must be followed well into the
nonlinear regime, and a fully relativistic framework for this regime does not
exist yet, we compare two approximate schemes: the widely used spherical
collapse model, and the pseudo-Newtonian approach. We show that both
approximation schemes convey identical equations for the density contrast, when
the pressure perturbation of dark energy is parametrized in terms of an
effective sound speed. We also make a comparison of these approximate
approaches to general relativity in the linearized regime, which lends some
support to the approximations.Comment: 15 pages, 2 figure
Depletion potential in hard-sphere mixtures: theory and applications
We present a versatile density functional approach (DFT) for calculating the
depletion potential in general fluid mixtures. In contrast to brute force DFT,
our approach requires only the equilibrium density profile of the small
particles {\em before} the big (test) particle is inserted. For a big particle
near a planar wall or a cylinder or another fixed big particle the relevant
density profiles are functions of a single variable, which avoids the numerical
complications inherent in brute force DFT. We implement our approach for
additive hard-sphere mixtures. By investigating the depletion potential for
high size asymmetries we assess the regime of validity of the well-known
Derjaguin approximation for hard-sphere mixtures and argue that this fails. We
provide an accurate parametrization of the depletion potential in hard-sphere
fluids which should be useful for effective Hamiltonian studies of phase
behavior and colloid structure
