Influence of Road Speed Restrictions on the Incidence and Severity of Head Injuries
A comparative survey has been made of patients with head injuries admitted to hospital in 1973 and 1974, before and after the introduction of fuel-saving measures, which included road speed restrictions. The severity and incidence of injury are shown to have decreased dramatically. It is concluded from this that the main cause of the improvement has been reduce:l road traffic speeds. A plea is made that they be permanently maintained
Organizational Behaviour: Exploring The Relationship Between Ethical Climate, Self-Efficacy And Hope
This article explicates the extent to which ethical climate, self-efficacy and hope are related. The objective of the study was to determine if a relationship exist between ethical climate, hope and self-efficacy. The relationship between these constructs has not been researched previously. This research will add to the body of knowledge. Three questionnaires, namely Victor and Cullen’s Ethical Climate Questionnaire (ECQ) (1987), the State Hope Scale (SHS) developed by Snyder, Sympson, Ybasco, Borders, Babyak and Higgins (1996), and the Self-Efficacy Scale (SES) of Sherer, Maddux, Mercandante, Prentice-Dunn, Jacobs and Rogers (1982), were combined into one questionnaire and used to measure 97 participants’ responses. Various sources were compared using the Grounded Theory (GT) method. Descriptive, correlational, and inferential statistics were applied to determine the relationship between ethical climate, hope and self-efficacy. The Bravais-Pearson product-moment-correlation denotes a significant relationship between the ECQ, SHS and SES. The results demonstrate the plausibility of the integrated organizational behaviour model, which provides a new perspective on the influence of hope and self-efficacy on ethical climate
Planar Josephson Tunnel Junctions in a Transverse Magnetic Field
Traditionally, since the discovery of the Josephson effect in 1962, the
magnetic diffraction pattern of planar Josephson tunnel junctions has been
recorded with the field applied in the plane of the junction. Here we discuss
the static junction properties in a transverse magnetic field where
demagnetization effects imposed by the junction geometry and configuration of
the electrodes are important. Measurements of the critical current versus
magnetic field in planar Nb-based high-quality junctions with different
geometry, size and critical current density show that it is advantageous to use
a transverse magnetic field rather than an in-plane field to suppress the
Josephson tunnel current and Fiske resonances in practical applications.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Journal of Applied Physic
Film-making in socio-culturally sensitive areas : lessons from the Bo-Kaap
Bibliography: leaves 22-24.The main issues around filming in the Bo-Kaap are the need for film crews to respect the area's cultural norms, and for the community to benefit from the inconvenience of hosting film shoots. Recommendations to mitigate costs and enhance benefits of filming, according to the principles of sustainability, include formulating location-specific filming conditions; encouraging local involvement in the film industry; developing a film permitting bylaw; formalising a Professional Code of Conduct for film crews; and establishing an environmental and cultural trust fund for donations from film companies
Sea creatures of the Southern deep : a novel
This dissertation consists of a short novel, Sea Creatures of the Southern Deep, accompanied by a preface. In the preface, I discuss some aspects of my own experience that have influenced the text. I also outline the development of the manuscript, illustrating the process of revision with excerpts from drafts of the novel. The novel itself is an account of a woman's loss and eventual recovery of a childhood vitality and sense of self. The story follows a protagonist, Anna (initially Joanna), from fearless childhood through troubled youth to adulthood. Through this narrative, I examine themes of loss, desire and identity within sexual and non-sexual relationships. After an opening passage describing an episode in childhood, the story finds Joanna at high school. Her ambivalent friendship with a classmate, Leah, and infatuation with a teenage boy, Robbie, are described. This section culminates in Robbie's drowning and Leah's disappearance. Subsequently, Joanna / Anna attends art school, where she starts an intense relationship with an older man, Alan. Her almost voyeuristic fascination with Alan is mirrored by her job photographing animals at the aquarium. Throughout, the sea and sea creatures signify those things that Anna both desires and fears. Leah returns, moves in with Anna, and eventually seduces Alan. Anna takes revenge by creating a photographic collage; through this act she symbolically "kills" her lover. In doing so, she frees herself from a damaging relationship, and is able to re- enter her life rejuvenated
Edgeland encounters in the South African city : stone plant: a novel
‘Edgelands’, or urban wasteland spaces, are often represented as sparsely peopled ecosystems existing on the periphery of European and North American cities, in the wake of declining industry. This thesis examines the cultural meanings and literary, artistic and popular representations of such spaces in the context of the South African city, with a focus on Cape Town. I examine the cultural role played by three iconic urban spaces: the perimeter of the Table Mountain National Park, site of centuries-old anxiety over wilderness and criminality; the apartheid-era ‘unfinished bridge’ on the foreshore, which confronts the city with infrastructural dysfunction; and the generic road verge, where the barrier between motorist and pedestrian is breached. To demonstrate the role these spaces play in the popular imagination, I draw on representations in art, literature, journalism, advertising and government communication. South African edgeland differs from the British model in its colonial and apartheid origins, and in its consequent contemporary occupation by marginalised people. The ambiguous, compelling figure of the edgeland denizen emerges as a key figure in representations of these spaces, eclipsing the conventionally depicted edgeland qualities of isolation and wilderness. Thus peopled, South African edgelands are shown as facilitating encounters between historically divided communities. While such encounters are traditionally represented as perilous, they are also symbolic opportunities for empathetic or transformative connection. The thesis is accompanied by a novel that explores these themes, Stone Plant
Adiabatic Magnetization of Superconductors as a High-Performance Cooling Mechanism
The adiabatic magnetization of a superconductor is a cooling principle
proposed in the 30s, which has never been exploited up to now. Here we present
a detailed dynamic description of the effect, computing the achievable final
temperatures as well as the process timescales for different superconductors in
various regimes. We show that, although in the experimental conditions explored
so far the method is in fact inefficient, a suitable choice of initial
temperatures and metals can lead to unexpectedly large cooling effect, even in
the presence of dissipative phenomena. Our results suggest that this principle
can be re-envisaged today as a performing refrigeration method to access the
microK regime in nanodevices.Comment: 4 pages, 3 color figure
Conformal lattice of magnetic bubble domains in garnet film
We report experimental observations of magnetic bubble domain arrays with no
apparent translational symmetry. Additionally the results of comparative
numerical studies are discussed. Our goal is to present experimental evidence
for natural occurence of conformal structures.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, LaTeX2e, accepted as paper E090 at JEMS'01 (Joint
