    Payload accommodations. Satellite servicing support

    Get PDF
The proposed technology studies discussed at the Space Transportation Avionics Symposium in Williamsburg, VA on 7 to 9 November 1989, are discussed. The discussions and findings of the Payload Accommodations Subpanel are also summarized. The major objective of the proposed focused technology development is to develop and demonstrate (ground and flight) autonomous rendezvous, proximity operations, and docking/berthing capabilities to support satellite servicing. It is expected that autonomous rendezvous and docking (AR and D) capabilities will benefit both the users (e.g., satellite developers and operators) and the transportation system developers and operators. AR and D will provide increased availability of rendezvous and docking services by reducing the operational constraints associated with current capabilities. These constraints include specific lighting conditions, continuous space-to-ground communications, and lengthy ground tracking periods. AR and D will provide increased cost efficiency with the potential for reduced propellant expenditures and workloads (flight and/or ground crews). The AR and D operations will be more consistent, allowing more flexibility in the design of the satellite control system and docking/berthing mechanisms

Identification through technical analysis : A study of charting and UK non-professional investors

    Get PDF
The usefulness of technical analysis, or charting, has been questioned because it flies in the face of the 'random walk' and tests present conflicting results. We examine chartists' decision-making techniques and derive a taxonomy of charting strategies based on investors' market ontologies and calculative strategies. This distinguishes between trend-seekers and pattern-seekers, and trading as a system or an art. We argue that interpretative activity plays a more important role than previously thought and suggest that charting's main appeal for users lies in its power as a heuristic device regardless of its effectiveness at generating returns.PostprintPeer reviewe

A novel inductive electromagnetic energy harvester for condition monitoring sensors

    Get PDF
As the operation of electrical power networks becomes increasingly sophisticated, the role of condition monitoring is expanding. The burden of implementing additional condition monitoring will be eased if self-powered, fully autonomous sensors can be used to reduce installation and maintenance costs. Changing batteries is inconvenient and standard mains power is often not available where sensors are needed. Existing commercial inductive harvesters to power sensors must be fitted around high voltage transmission lines, which requires either a power outage or live line installation. In this paper, an alternative harvester is presented which can be installed at any location where there is sufficient magnetic field. Magnetic flux densities within a cable tunnel are considered, from which a suitable target is defined for the magnetic flux density range over which the harvester must provide power to the sensor. optimisation of output power per unit volume limits cost and allows placement of sensors in locations with restricted space. Coil parameters to achieve high output power per unit volume are discussed and experimental results are presented that demonstrate effective energy harvesting. A coil design for a typical cable tunnel is proposed

What are the Common Factors Among Consulting Competency Models?

An internal consultant is an organizational development professional who is employed full time by an organization (Lacey, 1). Internal consultants differ from external consultants in this regard, however, generally speaking they do serve a similar purpose and in doing so follow similar steps. The general model of planned change outlined in Cummings and Worley’s, “Organizational Development and Change” state that all consultants adhere to five phases throughout each project lifecycle. These phases include: entering, contracting, diagnosing, intervening, and evaluating. Each of these stages is approach slightly differently depend on whether a consultant is interval verses external. As an internal consultant it is important to note the leverage points that exist at each stage. While an external consultant often need to spend a large portion of time getting familiarized with their client, and internal consultant has the benefit of “ready relationships” and ideally knowledge of business and company Jargon (Lacy, 2). Ideally, the internal consultant also has a benefit in the diagnosing phase, because they already have relationships with members from all over the organization and have a reputation for success. On the flip side an internal consultant does not buy-in from organizational members. External consulting groups sometimes are better able to generate energy and interest because they constitute a large expense and sometimes come with prestigious credentials (Elder)
