Commitment in University Students: Generator of Successful Professionals

    Get PDF
The University has historically been regarded as the harbinger of values, human rights, and other noble pursuits. It is within this atmosphere that personal development, mutual respect, and collaboration are expected to flourish through commitment to work and study. Yet in order for meaningful and sustainable social, economic, and political changes to take root, the author opines that certain adjustments to the overall social fabric are occasionally required and can only be achieved through unyielding commitment — an essential value transmitted from person to person through both individual and collective reflection

Limiting discounted-cost control of partially observable stochastic systems

    Get PDF
This paper presents two main results on partially observable (PO) stochastic systems. In the first one, we consider a general PO system Xt+1 = F(xt, ~, ~J, Yt = G(xo 'IlJ (t = 0, 1, ... ) (*) on Borel spaces, with possibly unbounded cost-per-stage functions, and give conditions for the existence of a-discount optimal control policies (0 < a < 1). In the second result we specialize (*) to additive-noise systems xt+1 = Fo (Xt' aJ + ~o Yt = Go (xJ + 'Ilt (t= 0, 1, ... ) in Euclidean spaces, with Fn (x,a) and Go(x) converging pointwise to functions F «l(x, a) and G«l(x), respectively, and give conditions for the limiting PO model Xt+1 = F «l(xt, aJ + ~t Yt = G«l(xJ + 'Ilt to have an a-discount optimal policy

Matrilineal Heritage in Southern Iberia Reveals Deep Genetic Links between Continents

    Get PDF
Within the Mediterranean Basin, the Iberian Peninsula has been a focus of attraction for several cultures and civilizations from its prehistory and history, making it a target territory for studying human migration patterns and peopling processes using a wide and heterogeneous spectrum of genomic markers. While its Cantabrian fringe represents the most regularly analysed area in terms of its mitochondrial diversity, the absence of monographic surveys on the maternal genetic composition of southern Iberians (i.e., Andalusians) is striking. In this work, we present a comprehensive view of various aspects of the human maternal heritage of the autochthonous Andalusian population regarding specific mitochondrial haplogroups considered key candidates to determine the genetic relationship between Europe and Africa. Data reveal that southern Iberian populations do not have genetically homogeneous mitochondrial DNA profiles, and their observed genetic affinity with north-western African populations represents strong signals of old, sustained and bidirectional human movements between the northern and southern shores of the western Mediterranean. Thorough analyses of African mtDNA haplogroups have shown that the most relevant African contribution within Iberian Peninsula could be explained as a consequence of prehistoric events. The subsequent historic episodes helped to strengthen the ties between both shores. In southern Iberia, mitochondrial and other genetic markers show that the Strait of Gibraltar together with its surrounding maritime areas should be considered a bridge between continents. More broadly, the Mediterranean Sea has acted as a transport surface, that is, as a permeable barrier to human migrations from prehistoric and historic times. In conclusion, this research contributes to our knowledge of processes that have shaped the recent human genetic history in the Mediterranean and, more specifically, of the population dynamics that the inhabitants of southern Iberia have experienced with respect to other neighbouring North African populations

Asymmetric preparation of antifungal 1-(4 -chlorophenyl)-1-cyclopropyl methanol and 1-(4 -chlorophenyl)-2-phenylethanol. Study of the detoxification mechanism by Botrytis cinerea

    Get PDF
Chiral alcohols are important as bioactive compounds or as precursors to such molecules. On the basis of the different antifungal properties of the enantiopure alcohol derivatives of 4-chlorophenyl cyclopropyl ketone and benzyl 4-chlorophenyl ketone, their enantioselective synthesis by chemical and biocatalytic methods was studied. The detoxification pathways by the phytopathogen fungus Botrytis cinerea are reported

Botrylactone: new interest in an old moleculedreview of its absolute configuration and related compounds

    Get PDF
The absolute configuration of botrylactone, a unique compound with an interesting polyketide lactone skeleton with two oxirane bridges previously isolated from Botrytis cinerea and described as a powerful antibiotic, has been reviewed on the basis of sign of the optical rotation, NOE experiments and NMR method. The isolation of 7-deoxybotrylactone and 5-hydroxy-7-(4-hydroxydec-2(3)-enoyl) botrylactone enables us to characterize an intriguing new family of compounds with this interesting polyketide skeleton. A common biosynthetic origin with botcinin derivatives is proposed

Hydrazones as Singular Reagents in Asymmetric Organocatalysis

    Get PDF
This Minireview summarizes strategies and developments regarding the use of hydrazones as reagents in asymmetric organocatalysis, their distinct roles in nucleophile–electrophile, cycloaddition, and cyclization reactions. The key structural elements governing the reactivity of these reagents in a preferred pathway will be discussed, as well as their different interactions with organocatalysts, leading to diverse activation modes. Along these studies, the synthetic equivalence of N-monoalkyl, N,N-dialkyl, and N-acyl hydrazones with several synthons is also highlighted. Emphasis is also put on the mechanistic studies performed to understand the observed reactivities. Finally, the functional group transformations performed from the available products has also been analyzed, highlighting the synthetic value of these methodologies, which served to access numerous families of valuable multifunctional compounds and nitrogen-containing heterocycles.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad CTQ2013-48164-C2-1-P, CTQ201348164-C2-2-PEuropean FEDER fundsJunta de Andalucía 2012/FQM 107
