    Dysflective cones: Visual function and cone reflectivity in long-term follow-up of acute bilateral foveolitis.

    PURPOSE:Confocal adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscope (AOSLO) images provide a sensitive measure of cone structure. However, the relationship between structural findings of diminished cone reflectivity and visual function is unclear. We used fundus-referenced testing to evaluate visual function in regions of apparent cone loss identified using confocal AOSLO images. METHODS:A patient diagnosed with acute bilateral foveolitis had spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) (Spectralis HRA + OCT system [Heidelberg Engineering, Vista, CA, USA]) images indicating focal loss of the inner segment-outer segment junction band with an intact, but hyper-reflective, external limiting membrane. Five years after symptom onset, visual acuity had improved from 20/80 to 20/25, but the retinal appearance remained unchanged compared to 3 months after symptoms began. We performed structural assessments using SD-OCT, directional OCT (non-standard use of a prototype on loan from Carl Zeiss Meditec) and AOSLO (custom-built system). We also administered fundus-referenced functional tests in the region of apparent cone loss, including analysis of preferred retinal locus (PRL), AOSLO acuity, and microperimetry with tracking SLO (TSLO) (prototype system). To determine AOSLO-corrected visual acuity, the scanning laser was modulated with a tumbling E consistent with 20/30 visual acuity. Visual sensitivity was assessed in and around the lesion using TSLO microperimetry. Complete eye examination, including standard measures of best-corrected visual acuity, visual field tests, color fundus photos, and fundus auto-fluorescence were also performed. RESULTS:Despite a lack of visible cone profiles in the foveal lesion, fundus-referenced vision testing demonstrated visual function within the lesion consistent with cone function. The PRL was within the lesion of apparent cone loss at the fovea. AOSLO visual acuity tests were abnormal, but measurable: for trials in which the stimulus remained completely within the lesion, the subject got 48% correct, compared to 78% correct when the stimulus was outside the lesion. TSLO microperimetry revealed reduced, but detectible, sensitivity thresholds within the lesion. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPORTANCE:Fundus-referenced visual testing proved useful to identify functional cones despite apparent photoreceptor loss identified using AOSLO and SD-OCT. While AOSLO and SD-OCT appear to be sensitive for the detection of abnormal or absent photoreceptors, changes in photoreceptors that are identified with these imaging tools do not correlate completely with visual function in every patient. Fundus-referenced vision testing is a useful tool to indicate the presence of cones that may be amenable to recovery or response to experimental therapies despite not being visible on confocal AOSLO or SD-OCT images

    The Amplitude of Non-Equilibrium Quantum Interference in Metallic Mesoscopic Systems

    We study the influence of a DC bias voltage V on quantum interference corrections to the measured differential conductance in metallic mesoscopic wires and rings. The amplitude of both universal conductance fluctuations (UCF) and Aharonov-Bohm effect (ABE) is enhanced several times for voltages larger than the Thouless energy. The enhancement persists even in the presence of inelastic electron-electron scattering up to V ~ 1 mV. For larger voltages electron-phonon collisions lead to the amplitude decaying as a power law for the UCF and exponentially for the ABE. We obtain good agreement of the experimental data with a model which takes into account the decrease of the electron phase-coherence length due to electron-electron and electron-phonon scattering.Comment: New title, refined analysis. 7 pages, 3 figures, to be published in Europhysics Letter

    Determination of complex dielectric functions of ion implanted and implanted‐annealed amorphous silicon by spectroscopic ellipsometry

    Measuring with a spectroscopic ellipsometer (SE) in the 1.8–4.5 eV photon energy region we determined the complex dielectric function (ϵ = ϵ1 + iϵ2) of different kinds of amorphous silicon prepared by self‐implantation and thermal relaxation (500 °C, 3 h). These measurements show that the complex dielectric function (and thus the complex refractive index) of implanted a‐Si (i‐a‐Si) differs from that of relaxed (annealed) a‐Si (r‐a‐Si). Moreover, its ϵ differs from the ϵ of evaporated a‐Si (e‐a‐Si) found in the handbooks as ϵ for a‐Si. If we use this ϵ to evaluate SE measurements of ion implanted silicon then the fit is very poor. We deduced the optical band gap of these materials using the Davis–Mott plot based on the relation: (ϵ2E2)1/3 ∼ (E− Eg). The results are: 0.85 eV (i‐a‐Si), 1.12 eV (e‐a‐Si), 1.30 eV (r‐a‐Si).     Aligned gold nanorods in silica made by ion irradiation of core-shell colloidal particles

    Colloidal particles with a 14 nm diameter Au core surrounded by a 72 nm thick silica shell have been irradiated with 30 MeV heavy ions. The shell deforms into an oblate ellipsoid, while the core becomes rod-shaped (aspect ratio up to 9) with the major axis along the beam. Optical extinction measurements show evidence for split plasmon bands, characteristic for anisotropic metal nanoparticles

    Chiral surface characterisation and reactivity toward H-D exchange of a curved platinum crystal

    Understanding heterogeneous catalysis at the atomic level requires detailed knowledge of the reactivity of different surface sites toward specific bond breaking and bond making events. We illustrate a new method in such investigations. We use a macroscopically curved Pt single crystal containing a large variation in density of highly kinked steps of two different chiralities. Scanning tunneling microscopy maps the entire range of surface structures present on the 31 degrees section surrounding the Pt(111) apex. Whereas most of the surface shows the expected characteristic arrays of parallel steps, hexagonally-shaped, single-atom deep pits remain after cleaning procedures near the apex. Their orientation is indicative of the different chiralities present on the two sides of the crystal's apex. These unintended defects locally raise the surface defect concentration, but are of little consequence to subsequent reactivity measurements for D-2 dissociation and H-D exchange as probed by supersonic molecular beam techniques. We quantify absolute elementary dissociation and relative isotopic exchange rates across the surface with high spatial resolution. At low incident energies, elementary dissociation of the homonuclear isotoplogues is dominated by the kinked steps. H-D exchange kinetics depend also mostly linearly on step density. The changing ratio of D(2)dissociation to H-D formation, however, suggests that anisotropic diffusion of H(D) atoms is of influence to the measured HD production rate.Catalysis and Surface Chemistr

    Assessing planning decisions by activity type during the scheduling process

    Existing activity-based models still make assumptions about scheduling decision processes that are not well-informed by empirical evidence. In this article, a step forward is taken to better understand the activity-scheduling process and to improve activity-based models. In particular, different planning decision mechanisms depending on several activity type classifications are explored. First, models describing the planning of several aggregate activity types are considered. For these activities, three planning decisions are studied: location, planning time horizon and rescheduling. The 'with whom' planning decision is also studied when subtypes of recreational/entertainment activities are investigated in depth. Significant differences are found in modelling results for each activity type and subtype and each planning decision. These results confirm the existence of different mechanisms underlying the activity-travel decision process when activity types and subtypes are considered.     Dysfunctional lens syndrome

    Purpose: To report the pre- and post-operative findings of a case with dysfunctional lens syndrome. Methods: An adult patient was evaluated using iTrace aberrometer, Tomey topographer and slitlamp biomicroscopy to confirm dysfunctional lens syndrome. Results: A 45-year-old male patient presented with the chief complaint of poor visual quality; uncorrected visual acuity 20/40 in the right eye, best spectacle corrected visual acuity 20/25 in the right eye with refraction Plano/−1.50 × 80 (SE = −0.75D). Pre- and post-operative root-mean-square (RMS) of total higherorder aberrations in the entire eye, the internal optics and the cornea were 0.350 & 0.257, 0.311 & 0.236 and 0.214 & 0.191 micron (μ), respectively. Also, the magnitude of preoperative total, internal and corneal coma was 0.254 μ × 222°, 0.274μ×242° and 0.097μ × 131° and postoperative values were 0.170 μ × 162°, 0.131 μ × 177°, 0.054 μ × 125°, respectively. Conclusion: These results show that sometime the HOAs of the internal optics, mainly crystalline lens, are not compensated by the cornea and this may cause visual discomfort in the absence of any significant cataract, this situation is known as dysfunctional lens syndrome (DLS)

    Scaling platinum‐catalyzed hydrogen dissociation on corrugated surfaces

    We determine absolute reactivities for dissociation at low coordinated Pt sites. Two curved Pt(111) single-crystal surfaces allow us to probe either straight or highly kinked step edges with molecules impinging at a low impact energy. A model extracts the average reactivity of inner and outer kink atoms, which is compared to the reactivity of straight A- and B-type steps. Local surface coordination numbers do not adequately capture reactivity trends for H(2)dissociation. We utilize the increase of reactivity with step density to determine the area over which a step causes increased dissociation. This step-type specific reactive area extends beyond the step edge onto the (111) terrace. It defines the reaction cross-section for H(2)dissociation at the step, bypassing assumptions about contributions of individual types of surface atoms. Our results stress the non-local nature of H(2)interaction with a surface and provide insight into reactivity differences for nearly identical step sites.Catalysis and Surface Chemistr
