Thermodynamic and kinetic study of CO2 adsorption/desorptionon amine-functionalized sorbents

    Get PDF
473-482The thermodynamic and kinetic characteristics of CO2 adsorption of SBA-16 loaded with pentaethylenehexamine (PEHA) have been investigated using adsorption column system. The Langmuir isotherm model fitts the CO2 adsorption isotherms well, and the average isosteric heat of adsorption is 59.6 kJ/mol, indicating that the CO2 adsorption on PEHA-loaded SBA-16 is chemisorption. The Avrami fractional dynamics model is very suitable for illustrating the adsorption behaviour of CO2 adsorption, and the results of kinetic analysis show that increasing the partial pressure of CO2 or the working temperature is beneficial to the adsorption of CO2. Three desorption methods were evaluatedto achieve the optimal desorption method. The results show that VTSA and steam stripping method are effective methods for industrial CO2 desorption. Steam stripping may be more suitable for plants that already have low-cost steam. The activation energy Ea of CO2 adsorption/desorption is calculated using Arrhenius equation. The activation energy Ea of CO2 adsorption/desorption was calculated using the Arrhenius equation. The results show that the absolute value of Ea (adsorption) decreases with the increase of CO2 partial pressure. In addition, the Ea value of vacuum rotary regeneration method and steam stripping method is smaller than the Ea value of temperature swing regeneration

An efficient neural optimizer for resonant nanostructures: demonstration of highly-saturated red silicon structural color

Freeform nanostructures have the potential to support complex resonances and their interactions, which are crucial for achieving desired spectral responses. However, the design optimization of such structures is nontrivial and computationally intensive. Furthermore, the current "black box" design approaches for freeform nanostructures often neglect the underlying physics. Here, we present a hybrid data-efficient neural optimizer for resonant nanostructures by combining a reinforcement learning algorithm and Powell's local optimization technique. As a case study, we design and experimentally demonstrate silicon nanostructures with a highly-saturated red color. Specifically, we achieved CIE color coordinates of (0.677, 0.304)-close to the ideal Schrodinger's red, with polarization independence, high reflectance (>85%), and a large viewing angle (i.e., up to ~ 25deg). The remarkable performance is attributed to underlying generalized multipolar interferences within each nanostructure rather than the collective array effects. Based on that, we were able to demonstrate pixel size down to ~400 nm, corresponding to a printing resolution of 65,000 pixels per inch. Moreover, the proposed design model requires only ~300 iterations to effectively search a 13-dimensional design space - an order of magnitude more efficient than the previously reported approaches. Our work significantly extends the free-form optical design toolbox for high-performance flat-optical components and metadevices

Facile Fabrication of Sandwich Structural Membrane With a Hydrogel Nanofibrous Mat as Inner Layer for Wound Dressing Application

A common problem existing in wound dressing is to integrate the properties of against water erosion while maintaining a high water-uptake capacity. To tackle this issue, we imbedded one layer of hydrogel nanofibrous mat into two hydrophobic nanofibrous mats, thereafter, the sandwich structural membrane (SSM) was obtained. Particularly, SSM is composed of three individual nanofibrous layers which were fabricated through sequential electrospinning technology, including two polyurethane/antibacterial agent layers, and one middle gelatin/rutin layer. The obtained SSM is characterized in terms of morphology, component, mechanical, and functional performance. In addition to the satisfactory antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, and antioxidant property upon scavenging DPPH free radicals, the obtained SSM also shows a desirable thermally regulated water vapor transmission rate. More importantly, such SSM can be mechanically stable and keep its intact morphology without appearance damage while showing a high water-absorption ratio. Therefore, the prepared sandwich structural membrane with hydrogel nanofibrous mat as inner layer can be expected as a novel wound dressing

2-Methyl-pentanoyl-carnitine (2-MPC) : a urine biomarker for patent Ascaris lumbricoides infection

Infections with intestinal worms, such as Ascaris lumbricoides, affect hundreds of millions of people in all tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Through large-scale deworming programs, World Health Organization aims to reduce moderate-to-heavy intensity infections below 1%. Current diagnosis and monitoring of these control programs are solely based on the detection of worm eggs in stool. Here we describe how metabolome analysis was used to identify the A. lumbricoides-specific urine biomarker 2-methyl pentanoyl carnitine (2-MPC). This biomarker was found to be 85.7% accurate in determining infection and 90.5% accurate in determining a moderate-to-heavy infection. Our results also demonstrate that there is a correlation between 2-MPC levels in urine and A. lumbricoides DNA detected in stool. Furthermore, the levels of 2-MPC in urine were shown to rapidly and strongly decrease upon administration of a standard treatment (single oral dose of 400 mg albendazole). In an Ascaris suum infection model in pigs, it was found that, although 2-MPC levels were much lower compared to humans, there was a significant association between urinary 2-MPC levels and both worm counts (p=0.023) and the number of eggs per gram (epg) counts (p<0.001). This report demonstrates that urinary 2-MPC can be considered an A. lumbricoides-specific biomarker that can be used to monitor infection intensity

Designing robust schedule coordination scheme for transit networks with safety control margins

    Get PDF
We propose a robust schedule coordination scheme which combines timetable planning with a semi-flexible departure delayed control strategy in case of disruptions. The flexibility is provided by allowing holding for the late incoming bus within a safety control margin (SCM). In this way, the stochastic travel time is addressed by the integration of real-time control and slacks at the planning phase. The schedule coordination problem then jointly optimises the planning headways and slack times in the timetable subject to SCM. Analytical formulations of cost functions are derived for three types of operating modes: uncoordinated operation, departure punctual control and departure delayed control. The problem is formulated as a stochastic mixed integer programming model and solved by a branch-and-bound algorithm. Numerical results provide an insight into the interaction between SCM and slack times, and demonstrate that the proposed model leads to cost saving and higher efficiency when SCM is considered. Compared to the conventional operating modes, the proposed method also presents advantages in transfer reliability and robustness to delay and demand variation

Molecular epidemiology of measles viruses in China, 1995–2003

This report describes the genetic characterization of 297 wild-type measles viruses that were isolated in 24 provinces of China between 1995 and 2003. Phylogenetic analysis of the N gene sequences showed that all of the isolates belonged to genotype H1 except 3 isolates, which were genotype A. The nucleotide sequence and predicted amino acid homologies of the 294-genotype H1 strains were 94.7%–100% and 93.3%–100%, respectively. The genotype H1 isolates were divided into 2 clusters, which differed by approximately 2.9% at the nucleotide level. Viruses from both clusters were distributed throughout China with no apparent geographic restriction and multiple co-circulating lineages were present in many provinces. Even though other measles genotypes have been detected in countries that border China, this report shows that genotype H1 is widely distributed throughout the country and that China has a single, endemic genotype. This important baseline data will help to monitor the progress of measles control in China

Flexible transit routing model considering passengers’ willingness to pay

    Get PDF
This paper proposes an alternative flexible transit model with two levels of bus stops, A level and B level. A-level bus stops are fixed, while B-level bus stops are flexible and provide service only when passengers indicate a strong willingness to pay (WTP). This fare structure encourages passengers to choose bus stops with their mobile phones or computers. An optimization model of 0-1 integer-programming is formulated based on whether certain B-level stops can be serviced. With a numerical example, we compare the performance of the proposed traversing method and a tabu search algorithm, both of which are adapted to solve the model. Finally, a real case is provided to evaluate the proposed transit system against comparable systems (e.g., a fixed-route transit system and a taxi service), and the result shows that the flexible transit routing model will help both passengers and bus companies, thus creating a win-win situation
