Antimicrobial susceptibility of Streptococcus pneumoniae from children attending day-care lefts in a central Italian city
ObjectiveTo undertake a survey of nasopharyngeal carriage of Streptococcus pneumoniae, which reflects strains causing infection, in 100 children under 3 years of age attending day-care lefts in Frosinone, a city near Rome.MethodsFifty-three unique isolates of S. pneumoniae, isolated from 41 of the children tested, were tested for antimicrobial susceptibility to penicillin, cefotaxime, erythromycin, clindamycin, tetracycline, chloramphenicol and trimethoprim–sulfamethoxazole.ResultsResistance rates were as follows: penicillin, 20.7% (15% intermediate; 5.7% resistant); trimethoprim–sulfamethoxazole, 64.2%; erythromycin, 64.2%; clindamycin, 30.2%; tetracycline, 32.1%; and chloramphenicol, 3.8%. Except for three intermediate strains, all strains were susceptible to cefotaxime. Only five strains were susceptible to all of the antibiotics tested. An unusual finding of this study was that 23 of the 34 erythromycin-resistant strains were penicillin susceptible, whereas erythromycin-resistant strains found in other countries are predominantly penicillin resistant as well. In addition, 18 of the 34 erythromycin-resistant strains were susceptible to clindamycin. Serogroups 6, 14, 19 and 23 accounted for 84.9% of the isolates.ConclusionsThese data show that carriage of antibiotic-resistant pneumococci in children under 3 years of age is high in Frosinone, Italy. Information on resistance rates in pneumococcal disease in different age groups and on prevalence of drug resistance in other parts of the country is urgently needed
Nasal cellularity in 183 unselected schoolchildren aged 9 to 11 years
Although rhinitis is extremely frequent in children, methods for assessing the severity of nasal inflammation produce results with wide variability and hence weak clinical significance. We designed this epidemiologic investigation to define the clinical usefulness of assessing nasal cellularity in children
Using Virtual Reality to Rehabilitate Neglect
Purpose: Virtual Reality (VR) platforms gained a lot of attention in the rehabilitation field due to their ability to engage patients and the opportunity they offer to use real world scenarios. As neglect is characterized by an impairment in exploring space that greatly affects daily living, VR could be a powerful tool compared to classical paper and pencil tasks and computer training. Nevertheless, available platforms are costly and obstructive. Here we describe a low cost platform for neglect rehabilitation, that using consumer equipments allows the patient to train at home in an intensive fashion.
Method: We tested the platform on IB, a chronic neglect patient, who did not benefit from classical rehabilitation.
Results: Our results show that IB improved both in terms of neglect and attention. Importantly, these ameliorations lasted at a follow up evaluation 5 months after the last treatment session and generalized to everyday life activities.
Conclusions: VR platforms built using equipment technology and following theoretical principles on brain functioning may induce greater ameliorations in visuo-spatial deficits than classical paradigms possibly thanks to the real world scenarios in association with the "visual feedback" of the patient's own body operating in the virtual environmen
Tranexamic acid-loaded mesoporous silica microspheres as a hemostatic material
Bleeding management is considered essential for saving life both in the military and civilian field. There is still a need to develop topical hemostats that can stop bleeding and be used easily in the trauma sites. The aim of this work is to develop a hemostat based on mesoporous silica particles with large pores for bleeding control. Mesoporous silica microspheres (MSM) with particle size of 1.5 − 5 µm and pores diameter of 25 nm have been successfully synthesized and, for the first time, loaded with tranexamic acid (TXA) with a content of 4.7%w/w. The hemostatic activity of both the pure material and TXA-loaded material (TXA@MSM) was investigated. It was found that the blood clotting time was significantly shortened by both systems with respect to control. A hemolysis assay was performed to evaluate the hemolytic activity of MSM, and the result indicated that the material was blood compatible. A preliminary TXA in vitro release test was performed, showing the complete release of TXA from the carrier within one hour. Considering the above results, TXA@MSM can be considered a promising material for the development of new hemostats
Enhanced allergic sensitisation related to parental smoking
The objective of this study was to assess the role of parental smoking in changes, after a four year interval (1983-7), in the prevalence and severity of the atopic state in 166 pre-adolescent children. Allergy skin prick tests were related to parental smoking habits and their changes during this same interval. The total number of cigarettes smoked by parents decreased in 56 families while it increased in only 16. Boys had significantly more persistently positive skin tests and changed more frequently from negative to positive. The skin test index did not show significant changes in girls. This index did not change in children of persistent non-smokers or those starting to smoke during this period, while it increased among sons of those that quit smoking and of persistent smokers. This was not only due to those boys who became skin test positive during follow up. When analysis was restricted to 14 boys who had been skin test positive in 1983 and whose parents were persistent smokers, the index increased in eight, remained unchanged in four, and decreased in only two. This report supports the hypothesis that parental smoking is a factor that, together with specific allergenic exposure, may enhance allergic sensitisation in children
Spin and Statistics and First Principles
It was shown in the early Seventies that, in Local Quantum Theory (that is
the most general formulation of Quantum Field Theory, if we leave out only the
unknown scenario of Quantum Gravity) the notion of Statistics can be grounded
solely on the local observable quantities (without assuming neither the
commutation relations nor even the existence of unobservable charged field
operators); one finds that only the well known (para)statistics of Bose/Fermi
type are allowed by the key principle of local commutativity of observables. In
this frame it was possible to formulate and prove the Spin and Statistics
Theorem purely on the basis of First Principles.
In a subsequent stage it has been possible to prove the existence of a
unique, canonical algebra of local field operators obeying ordinary Bose/Fermi
commutation relations at spacelike separations. In this general guise the Spin
- Statistics Theorem applies to Theories (on the four dimensional Minkowski
space) where only massive particles with finite mass degeneracy can occur. Here
we describe the underlying simple basic ideas, and briefly mention the
subsequent generalisations; eventually we comment on the possible validity of
the Spin - Statistics Theorem in presence of massless particles, or of
violations of locality as expected in Quantum Gravity.Comment: Survey based on a talk given at the Meeting on "Theoretical and
experimental aspects of the spin - statistics connection and related
symmetries", Trieste, Italy - October 21-25, 200
Valorization of byproducts of hemp multipurpose crop: Short non-aligned bast fibers as a source of nanocellulose
Nanocellulose was extracted from short bast fibers, from hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) plants harvested at seed maturity, non-retted, and mechanically decorticated in a defibering apparatus, giving non-aligned fibers. A chemical pretreatment with NaOH and HCl allowed the removal of most of the non-cellulosic components of the fibers. No bleaching was performed. The chemically pretreated fibers were then refined in a beater and treated with a cellulase enzyme, followed by mechanical defibrillation in an ultrafine friction grinder. The fibers were characterized by microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and X-ray diffraction after each step of the process to understand the evolution of their morphology and composition. The obtained nanocellulose suspension was composed of short nanofibrils with widths of 5–12 nm, stacks of nanofibrils with widths of 20–200 nm, and some larger fibers. The crystallinity index was found to increase from 74% for the raw fibers to 80% for the nanocellulose. The nanocellulose retained a yellowish color, indicating the presence of some residual lignin. The properties of the nanopaper prepared with the hemp nanocellulose were similar to those of nanopapers prepared with wood pulp-derived rod-like nanofibrils
