Presence and task performance:an approach in the light of cognitive style
The paper highlights the relationship between each of four bi-polar dimensions of personality cognitive style, such as extraversion–introversion, sensing–intuition, thinking–feeling and judging–perceiving, and the level of sense of presence experienced. Findings indicate that individuals who are more sensitive, more feeling or more introverted experience a higher level of presence. While not reaching statistical significance, differing cognitive styles appear to impact on task performance. The apparent negative relationship discovered between sense of presence and task performance should be considered in the light of task characteristics. We discuss the implications of these findings and how they contribute to an understanding of the complex relationship that exists between presence and task performance and how this subsequently ought to influence the design of virtual environments

First tests of a Micromegas TPC in a magnetic field
Talk given by P. ColasSince the summer of 2003, a large Micromegas TPC prototype (1000 channels, 50 cm drift, 50 cm diameter) has been operated in a 2T superconducting magnet at Saclay. A description of this apparatus and first results from cosmic ray tests are presented. Additional measurements using simpler detectors with a laser source, an X-ray gun and radio-active sources are discussed. Drift velocity and gain measurements, electron attachment and aging studies for a Micromegas TPC are presented. In particular, using simulations and measurements, it is shown that an mixture is optimal for operation at a future Linear Collider
Polynomial Time Construction for Spatially Balanced Latin Squares
In this paper we propose a construction that generates spatially balanced
Latin squares (SBLSs) in polynomial time. These structures are central to
the design of agronomic experiments, as they avoid biases that are otherwise
unintentionally introduced due to spatial auto-correlation. Previous
approaches were able to generate SBLSs of order up to 35 and required
about two weeks of computation. Our algorithm runs in O(n2) and generates
SBLSs of arbitrary order n where 2n + 1 is prime. For example, this
algorithm generates a SBLS of order 999 in a fraction of a second.National Science Foundation (NSF Expeditions

Acupuncture for stroke: perceptions and possibilities
Objective: To investigate perceptions and acceptability of, and attitudes towards, acupuncture for post-acute stroke and rehabilitation care by exploring the views of different stakeholders. Methods: Three electronic surveys were conducted to gauge the breadth of knowledge and acceptance of acupuncture in post-acute stroke and rehabilitation care among three stakeholder groups: (1) traditional acupuncturists registered with the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC); (2) National Health Service (NHS) professionals attending the 2017 UK Stroke Forum conference; and (3) the UK network of Stroke Club co-ordinators. Results: Of 278 NHS respondents, 31% were doctors. Over half (52%) of all NHS respondents reported they had insufficient knowledge about acupuncture, its effectiveness (23%) or how to refer (21%). Only 12% had previously referred stroke patients for acupuncture but 46% thought that there was role for acupuncture in post-acute stroke care (50% were unsure). Two thirds of BAcC acupuncturist respondents had treated at least one stroke patient, with 70.1% having treated 1–5 stroke patients and 71% having provided treatment in the last year, most commonly for motor impairment (88.2%). Of 99 Stroke Club coordinators who responded, only seven had ever been asked about acupuncture by patients, but most felt there would be interest. Conclusion: Interest in the provision of acupuncture for post-acute stroke care was expressed by both NHS practitioners and acupuncturists. Further research is required on the acceptability of acupuncture to patients as well as evidence of its clinical and cost effectiveness
