Pinwheels and nullhomologous surgery on 4-manifolds with b^+ = 1

We present a method for finding embedded nullhomologous tori in standard 4-manifolds which can be utilized to change their smooth structure. As an application, we show how to obtain infinite families of simply connected smooth 4-manifolds with b^+ = 1 and b^- = 2,...,7, via surgery on nullhomologous tori embedded in the standard manifolds CP^2 # k (-CP^2), k=2,...,7.Comment: Final version. To appear in AG

    Reverse engineering small 4-manifolds

We introduce a general procedure called `reverse engineering' that can be used to construct infinite families of smooth 4-manifolds in a given homeomorphism type. As one of the applications of this technique, we produce an infinite family of pairwise nondiffeomorphic 4-manifolds homeomorphic to CP^2#3(-CP^2).Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures. This is the final version published in AGT, volume 7 (2007), pp. 2103-2116

    Invariants for Lagrangian tori

We define an simple invariant of an embedded nullhomologous Lagrangian torus and use this invariant to show that many symplectic 4-manifolds have infinitely many pairwise symplectically inequivalent nullhomologous Lagrangian tori. We further show that for a large class of examples that lambda(T) is actually a C-infinity invariant. In addition, this invariant is used to show that many symplectic 4-manifolds have nontrivial homology classes which are represented by infinitely many pairwise inequivalent Lagrangian tori, a result first proved by S Vidussi for the homotopy K3-surface obtained from knot surgery using the trefoil knot in [Lagrangian surfaces in a fixed homology class: existence of knotted Lagrangian tori, J. Diff. Geom. (to appear)].Comment: Published by Geometry and Topology at http://www.maths.warwick.ac.uk/gt/GTVol8/paper25.abs.htm

MARTYRDOMS FAR AND NEAR: THE JESUIT GLOBAL IMAGINARY IN THE LIFE OF QUITO’S LOCAL «SAINT», MARIANA DE JESÚS (1618-45)

    Get PDF
The first complete hagiographic life of Mariana de Paredes y Flores (d.1645), a work popularly known as La Azucena de Quito («Lily of Quito»), has rightly been interpreted in terms of the local significance of both the saint and the discourse surrounding her life and piety. And yet a close reading of Jacinto Morán de Butrón’s late seventeenth-century hagiography suggests that a uniquely Jesuit outlook —fostered by narratives of missionary travails, encounters with the pagan «other», and personal martyrdom, and deepened by the imaginative contemplative language of the Spiritual Exercises— informed the spiritual self-understanding of this urban laywoman who probably never traveled more than a few miles from her birthplace. This evidence points to how Early Modern Roman Catholic identities reflected both local relationships and global imaginations

    Surgery on Nullhomologous Tori

By studying the example of smooth structures on CP^2#3(-CP^2) we illustrate how surgery on a single embedded nullhomologous torus can be utilized to change the symplectic structure, the Seiberg-Witten invariant, and hence the smooth structure on a 4-manifold

Charge Transfer Of Hydrogen Ions And Atoms In Metal Vapors

Cross sections and equilibrium fractions for energetic H+, H−, and H0 in collisions with metal vapor targets have been compiled and evaluated. Both experimental and theoretical results are reported. Sources of errors are discussed, and recommended values for the data are presented. © 1985, American Institute of Physics for the National Institute of Standards and Technology. All rights reserved

Code Validation Study for Base Flows

New and old rocket launch concepts recommend the clustering of motors for improved lift capability. The flowfield of the base region of the rocket is very complex and can contain high temperature plume gases. These hot gases can cause catastrophic problems if not adequately designed for. To assess the base region characteristics, advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is being used. As a precursor to these calculations the CFD code requires validation on base flows. The primary objective of this code validation study was to establish a high level of confidence in predicting base flows with the USA CFD code. USA has been extensively validated for fundamental flows and other applications. However, base heating flows have a number of unique characteristics so it was necessary to extend the existing validation for this class of problems. In preparation for the planned NLS 1.5 Stage base heating analysis, six case sets were studied to extend the USA code validation data base. This presentation gives a cursive review of three of these cases. The cases presented include a 2D axi-symmetric study, a 3D real nozzle study, and a 3D multi-species study. The results of all the studies show good general agreement with data with no adjustments to the base numerical algorithms or physical models in the code. The study proved the capability of the USA code for modeling base flows within the accuracy of available data

X-ray Nova XTE J1550-564: RXTE Spectral Observations

    Get PDF
Excellent coverage of the 1998 outburst of the X-ray Nova XTE J1550-564 was provided by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. XTE J1550-564 exhibited an intense (6.8 Crab) flare on 1998 September 19 (UT), making it the brightest new X-ray source observed with RXTE. We present a spectral analysis utilizing 60 Proportional Counter Array spectra from 2.5-20 keV spanning 71 days, and a nearly continuous All Sky Monitor light curve. The spectra were fit to a model including multicolor blackbody disk and power-law components. XTE J1550-564 is observed in the very high, high/soft, and intermediate canonical outburst states of Black Hole X-ray Novae.Comment: 14 pages including 1 table and 4 figures, Accepted to ApJ Letter
