Shape Outlier Detection and Visualization for Functional Data: the Outliergram

We propose a new method to visualize and detect shape outliers in samples of curves. In functional data analysis we observe curves defined over a given real interval and shape outliers are those curves that exhibit a different shape from the rest of the sample. Whereas magnitude outliers, that is, curves that exhibit atypically high or low values at some points or across the whole interval, are in general easy to identify, shape outliers are often masked among the rest of the curves and thus difficult to detect. In this article we exploit the relation between two depths for functional data to help visualizing curves in terms of shape and to develop an algorithm for shape outlier detection. We illustrate the use of the visualization tool, the outliergram, through several examples and asses the performance of the algorithm on a simulation study. We apply them to the detection of outliers in a children growth dataset in which the girls sample is contaminated with boys curves and viceversa.Comment: 27 pages, 5 figure

The representation of the serpent in ancient Iberia

We find a cult to the serpent in Iberian Prehistory and Protohistory. Indoeuropean and Mediterranean cultures adopted this cult which had similarities with the beliefs of an earlier people, probably autochthonous. Different ex-votos, Phoenician metal jars, the so-called "Celtic belts", Tartessian jewellery, Iberian pottery, etc., decorated with snakes prove this assertion. In the Roman period the serpent appears in objects of a very different type and, most times, though it may seem just a fashionable decoration it also has an apotropaic or fertility meaning, as in the case of the ara of Altea or Voconio's stela. La responsabilidad social empresarial valorada por los ejecutivos mexicanos en la cultura organizacional de las empresas transnacionales y las mexicanas

Para las empresas transnacionales es de vital importancia que los ejecutivos mexicanos estén familiarizados con la cultura organizacional empresarial tratando de alcanzar los objetivos planeados, como el incremento económico, la permanencia en el mercado, igualmente la expansión ante la competencia en un mundo globalizado. Así también es importante la implementación de nuevas estrategias como Responsabilidad Social Empresarial (RSE), Sin embargo en México el tema de la (RSE) es escaso, confuso e incipiente por parte de la alta dirección ejecutiva y por los consumidores en general. The Impact of Implementing the TBLApproach in 9th Graders ICC at the Public School Alfonso Jaramillo Gutierrez

Esta es una investigación acción cualitativa que se desarrolla en el colegio público Alfonso Jaramillo Gutiérrez de Pereira, Risaralda. Teniendo en cuenta que este es un mundo globalizado, es fundamental ser competente interculturalmente para comunicarse con miembros que son lingüística y culturalmente diferentes. Para ello, se implementa y utiliza el Aprendizaje Basado en Tareas como un enfoque para potenciar la Competencia Comunicativa Intercultural de los estudiantes de noveno grado de la mencionada escuela. Los objetivos de este estudio de investigación son determinar el impacto de implementar el enfoque TBL en el ICC de los estudiantes, y también identificar los desafíos de enseñanza al implementar tareas pedagógicas interculturales a través del enfoque TBL. Los datos cualitativos se recopilaron a partir de la observación, notas de campo, diarios de trabajo de campo y una prueba final. Al final del estudio, se revelaron cuatro hallazgos principales que son (1) el interés de los estudiantes estuvo influenciado por tareas y temas relacionados con la cultura del mundo real, (2) los estudiantes demostraron comprensión mediante el uso del español y el inglés, (3) La importancia de estar preparado para enseñar con la adecuada articulación de TBL e ICC en la lección y los materiales necesarios para desarrollarla, y la facilidad con que los estudiantes se distraen por cualquier circunstancia que se dé en el salón de clases. (4) Pruebas: Mejora de los estudiantes en su Competencia Comunicativa Intercultural a través del enfoque TBL.This is a qualitative action research that takes place in the public school Alfonso Jaramillo Gutierrez in Pereira, Risaralda. Considering that this is a globalized world, it is pivotal to be interculturally competent in order to communicate with members who are linguistically and culturally different. To this end, the Task-based Learning is implemented and used as an approach to enhance ninth graders’ Intercultural Communicative Competence of the abovementioned school. The aims of this research study are to determine the impact of implementing the TBL approach on student’s ICC, and also to to identify teaching challenges when implementing intercultural pedagogical tasks through the TBL approach. The qualitative data was collected from observation, field notes, field-work journals, and a final test. At the end of the study, four main findings were revealed which are (1) Students’ interest was influenced by real world scaffolded tasks and topics related to culture, (2) Students showed understanding by the use of Spanish and English, (3) The importance of being prepared to teach with the appropriate articulation of TBL and ICC in the lesson and the materials needed to develop it, and the ease with which students get distracted by any circumstance that took place in the classroom.
