Diurnal moist convection in Majorca under sea breeze conditions: idealized numerical experiments
Ponencia presentada en: VI Simposio Nacional de Predicción, celebrado en los servicios centrales de AEMET, en Madrid, del 17 al 19 de septiembre de 2018.Majorca has the adequate size to develop substantial sea breezes during the warm season, mainly along its long bays, that converge in the interior of the island. This low-level convergence acts as an effective triggering mechanism for thunderstorm development in situations of a convectively unstable air mass. The dependence of this triggering mechanism (intensity and location) on the large-scale flow and the possible role of the prominent orography of the island are two issues of scientific relevance and also of great practical interest for local forecasters. With the aim of analyzing how the synoptic wind interacts with the sea breeze, thirty-two different atmospheric scenarios (plus the non-orographic counterparts) were simulated with the MM5 model at 1 km grid resolution. Results confirm a great sensitivity of the early afternoon breeze convergence and associated convection on the direction of the large-scale flow. The position and extent of the convective area are also strongly conditioned by the orography. The convection is basically modulated by the sea breeze characteristics for the cases with weak synoptic wind intensity, while it is largely activated by the orographic forcing for the cases with higher wind intensity

[EN]A new set of regional climate change scenarios for Spain “Escenarios-PNACC 2012“ has been
developed in the framework of the coordinated program “Plan Nacional de Adaptación al Cambio
Climático (PNACC)“. This dataset includes regional projections produced applying both statisticaland
dynamical techniqes to the global simulations from IPCC-AR4 (CMIP3). In particular, the projections
with statistical downscaling techniques have been produced using grids of interpolated observation
(Spain02, at a 20km resolution) as well as local observations in a network of hundreds of stations from
AEMET. These projections and methodologies have been developed by different national research
groups within the project ESTCENA (acción estratégica del Ministerio de Medio Ambiente, 2009-2011), including also some of the projections developed by AEMET. The result is a homogeneous
dataset which sample the different sources of uncertainty (scenarios, global models, ad statistical
downscaling techniques), allowing for an appropriate analysis of impacts. In this work we describe
the resulting ensemble and show a preliminary analysis of the results.

The 8 and 9 September 2002 flash flood event in France: a model intercomparison
Within the framework of the European Interreg
IIIb Medocc program, the HYDROPTIMET project aims
at the optimization of the hydrometeorological forecasting
tools in the context of intense precipitation within complex
topography. Therefore, some meteorological forecast models
and hydrological models were tested on four Mediterranean
flash-flood events. One of them occured in France where the
South-eastern ridge of the French “Massif Central”, the Gard
region, experienced a devastating flood on 8 and 9 September
2002. 24 people were killed during this event and the
economic damage was estimated at 1.2 billion euros.
To built the next generation of the hydrometeorological
forecasting chain that will be able to capture such localized
and fast events and the resulting discharges, the forecasted
rain fields might be improved to be relevant for hydrological
purposes.
In such context, this paper presents the results of the evaluation
methodology proposed by Yates et al. (2005) that highlights
the relevant hydrological scales of a simulated rain
field. Simulated rain fields of 7 meteorological model runs
concerning with the French event are therefore evaluated for
different accumulation times. The dynamics of these models
are either based on non-hydrostatic or hydrostatic equation
systems. Moreover, these models were run under different
configurations (resolution, initial conditions). The classical
score analysis and the areal evaluation of the simulated rain
fields are then performed in order to put forward the main
simulation characteristics that improve the quantitative precipitation
forecast.
The conclusions draw some recommendations on the value
of the quantitative precipitation forecasts and way to use it for
quantitative discharge forecasts within mountainous areas

Numerical study of the October 2000 torrential precipitation event over eastern Spain: Analysis of the synoptic-scale stationarity
A torrential precipitation event affected eastern Spain during 21 to 24 October 2000. Total accumulated rainfall higher than 500 mm was registered at some locations, with values up to 300 mm in a 24-h period. The synoptic-scale charts for these days show the presence of a cold cutoff low aloft, south of the Iberian Peninsula, as a part of an Ω-blocking structure over Europe. At low levels, persistent easterly winds, established between a dominant anticyclone over eastern Europe and a cyclone over Morocco, are found over the western Mediterranean throughout the entire period. Satellite images show the advance and breaking away of a trough, with an associated cold front, over the Iberian Peninsula, which resulted in the cutoff low formation. Later, scattered convective cells are detected along the eastern Spanish coast during more than 3 days. Numerical simulations reveal that the convective environment was developed by the low-level advection of warm and moist air from central Mediterranean, being charged of moisture by evaporation from the sea. Sensitivity runs confirm that the synoptic-scale persistent low-level easterly flow, and specifically, the presence of a low level jet, was crucial for the subsynoptic processes leading to the long lasting torrential rainfall over the exposed terrains of eastern Spain. The stagnancy of the low-level flow is attributed to the quasi-stationary characteristics of the upper level cutoff low located south of the Iberian Peninsula. Experiments with modified upper-level potential vorticity distributions reveal that slight deviations from the observed configuration result in enhanced mobility of the low-level flow pattern, and thereby a reduction of the precipitation persistence. This suggests the major importance of a correct representation in the model initial conditions of the intensity and location of the upper level features, in order to obtain valuable numerical forecasts of these heavy rainfall events.Peer Reviewe
