    Bridging the day and night domain gap for semantic segmentation

    2019 IEEE Intelligent Vehicles Symposium (IV), Paris, France, 9-12 Jun. 2019Perception in autonomous vehicles has progressed exponentially in the last years thanks to the advances of visionbased methods such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). Current deep networks are both efficient and reliable, at least in standard conditions, standing as a suitable solution for the perception tasks of autonomous vehicles. However, there is a large accuracy downgrade when these methods are taken to adverse conditions such as nighttime. In this paper, we study methods to alleviate this accuracy gap by using recent techniques such as Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). We explore diverse options such as enlarging the dataset to cover these domains in unsupervised training or adapting the images on-the-fly during inference to a comfortable domain such as sunny daylight in a pre-processing step. The results show some interesting insights and demonstrate that both proposed approaches considerably reduce the domain gap, allowing IV perception systems to work reliably also at night.Ministerio de Economía y competitividadComunidad de Madri

    Primary endometrial carcinoma with signet-ring cells. A case report and review of the literature

    Endometrial adenocarcinoma with signet-ring cells is an infrequent histological type of carcinoma that usually corresponds to a metastasis of a primary carcinoma of another origin, mainly from the gastrointestinal tract or the breast. For this reason, in view of this histological finding, it is essential to carry out a thorough evaluation including mammography, gastroscopy, colonoscopy and thoracoabdominopelvic CT. To date, only six cases of primary endometrial carcinoma with signet-ring cells have been reported in the English literature. A 73-year-old patient was referred to the Gynecology Department with a 3-day history of postmenopausal bleeding. She was diagnosed with primary endometrial adenocarcinoma with signet-ring cells. The anatomopathological special features of the surgical specimen are presented, as well as the evolution of the patient, who remained asymptomatic and free of disease 28 months after surgery. A review of the literature is performed, emphasizing the peculiarities of this rare histological subtype. Despite the fact that primary endometrial carcinoma with signet-ring cells is an infrequent tumor, it must be considered in the differential diagnosis of malignant tumors of aforesaid origin. It is essential to carry out a correct and an extensive investigative study as well as an immunohistochemical analysis of the samples obtained for its confirmation diagnosis

    Integrating state-of-the-art CNNs for multi-sensor 3D vehicle detection in real autonomous driving environments

    2019 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Conference (ITSC), Auckland, New Zealand, 27-30 Oct. 2019This paper presents two new approaches to detect surrounding vehicles in 3D urban driving scenes and their corresponding Bird’s Eye View (BEV). The proposals integrate two state-of-the-art Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), such as YOLOv3 and Mask-RCNN, in a framework presented by the authors in [1] for 3D vehicles detection fusing semantic image segmentation and LIDAR point cloud. Our proposals take advantage of multimodal fusion, geometrical constrains, and pre-trained modules inside our framework. The methods have been tested using the KITTI object detection benchmark and comparison is presented. Experiments show new approaches improve results with respect to the baseline and are on par with other competitive state-of-the-art proposals, being the only ones that do not apply an end-to-end learning process. In this way, they remove the need to train on a specific dataset and show a good capability of generalization to any domain, a key point for self-driving systems. Finally, we have tested our best proposal in KITTI in our driving environment, without any adaptation, obtaining results suitable for our autonomous driving application.Ministerio de Economía y CompetitividadComunidad de Madri

    Naturalistic driving study for older drivers based on the DriveSafe app

However, the knowledge of actual mobility needs of senior drivers is scarce. In this paper, we present a naturalistic driving study (NDS) focused on older drivers through smartphone technology and using our DriveSafe app. Our system automatically generates a driving analysis report based on objective indicators. The proposal supposes an improvement over the traditional surveys and observers, and represents an advance over the current NDSs by using smartphones instead of complex instrumented vehicles. Our method avoids the problems of manual annotation by using an automatic method for data reduction information.     Zirconium Metal−Organic Polyhedra with Dual Behavior for Organophosphate Poisoning Treatment

    Organophosphate nerve agents and pesticides are extremely toxic compounds because they result in acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition and concomitant nerve system damage. Herein, we report the synthesis, structural characterization, and proof-of-concept utility of zirconium metal−organic polyhedra (Zr-MOPs) for organophosphate poisoning treatment. The results show the formation of robust tetrahedral cages [((n-butylCpZr)3(OH)3O)4L6]Cl6 (Zr-MOP-1; L = benzene-1,4- dicarboxylate, n-butylCp = n-butylcyclopentadienyl, Zr-MOP-10, and L = 4,4′-biphenyldicarboxylate) decorated with lipophilic alkyl residues and possessing accessible cavities of ∼9.8 and ∼10.7 Å inner diameters, respectively. These systems are able to both capture the organophosphate model compound diisopropylfluorophosphate (DIFP) and host and release the AChE reactivator drug pralidoxime (2-PAM). The resulting 2-PAM@ Zr-MOP-1(0) host−guest assemblies feature a sustained delivery of 2-PAM under simulated biological conditions, with a concomitant reactivation of DIFP-inhibited AChE.     Attention to emotion through a go/no-go task in children with oppositionality and callous-unemotional traits

    Background: There is debate about whether the difficulties that children with different degrees of oppositionality (ODD) and callous-unemotional traits (CU) have in processing emotions are global or specific. The aim of this study is to identify difficulties in recognizing emotion (happiness, anger, sadness and fear) through a go/no-go task in children with different levels of ODD and CU traits. Method: A total of 320 8-year-old children were assessed through questionnaires filled out by teachers about oppositional defiant symptoms and CU traits and were then distributed into four groups: LowCU-HighODD, HighCU-LowODD, HighCU-HighODD and a comparison group (LowCU-LowODD). Results: The analyses of variance comparing the 4 groups showed that the two groups with high ODD were less accurate than the control group in recognizing the emotion when the stimuli expressed happiness, fear or neutral emotion. The HighCU-HighODD group differed in the quality of the response (correct/wrong responses) but not in the reaction time in relation to the comparison group. The LowCU-HighODD group was faster to respond to emotions than the comparison group. Implications: The results show that the deficit in emotion processing is not restricted to specific distressing emotions such as fear or sadness, but they point to a global impairment in emotion processing in children scoring high in the constructs studied. The results also suggest that the difficulties that children with combined CU traits and oppositional conduct problems have in processing emotions are more of an emotional rather than an attentional natur

    Filariasis mamaria. A propósito de un caso

    Introducción: La filariasis con afectación mamaria es una enfermedad endémica de áreas tropicales y subtropicales de África, Asia, el Pacífico y América, que afecta a unos 120 millones de personas. Aunque es una patología rara en España, dado el aumento de pacientes procedentes de dichos países, debemos conocerla para saber diagnosticarla y tratarla adecuadamente. Objetivo de reportar el caso: Dar a conocer la filariasis con afectación mamaria, sus manifestaciones clínicas y radiológicas principales, a través de un caso clínico de nuestras consultas de ginecología. Descripción del caso: Paciente de 43 años, procedente de Guinea Ecuatorial que acude a la consulta de Ginecología por mastalgia bilateral y aumento del volumen de las mamas de semanas de evolución. La exploración es anodina por lo que se solicita mamografía bilateral en la que describen calcificaciones compatibles con filariasis. A pesar de que el resto de pruebas fueron negativas, dada la alta sospecha clínica y radiológica se diagnosticó de filariasis mamaria. Conclusiones: A pesar de la actual campaña mundial para eliminar la filariasis, el aumento de migración global incrementa la probabilidad de padecer casos importados de filariasis mamaria. Por tanto, el conocimiento de las diferentes parasitosis es imprescindible para realizar un buen diagnóstico diferencial con otras entidades clínicamente similares, e instaurar el tratamiento más adecuado. Introduction: Breast filariasis is an endemic disease from tropical and subtropical areas of Africa, Asia, the Pacific and America affecting about 120 million people. Although it is a rare pathology in Spain, given the increase in patients from the referred countries, we must be aware of it in order to know how to diagnose and treat it properly. Objective of reporting the case: To raise awareness of filariasis with breast involvement and its main clinical and radiological manifestations, through a clinical case of our gynecology consultations. Case report: 43-year-old patient from Equatorial Guinea who comes to the Gynecology consultation for bilateral mastalgia and breast enlargement of weeks of evolution. The examination is anodyne, so bilateral mammography is requested in wich calcifications compatible with filariasis are described. Despite the rest of the tests are negative, given the high clinical and radiological suspicion, the diagnosis of breast filariasis is made. Conclusions: Despite the current worldwide campaign to eliminate filariasis, the increase in global migration enhances the probability of suffering from imported cases of breast filariasis Therefore, the knowledge of the different parasitoses is essential to make a correct differential diagnosis with other clinically similar entities, and to establish the most appropriate treatment

    The case of a southern European glacier disappearing under recent warming that survived Roman and Medieval warm periods

    Mountain glaciers have generally experienced an accelerated retreat over the last three decades as a rapid response to current global warming. However, the response to previous warm periods in the Holocene is not well-described for glaciers of the of southern Europe mountain ranges, such as the Pyrenees. The situation during the Medieval Climate Anomaly (900-1300 CE) is particularly relevant since it is not certain whether the glaciers just experienced significant ice loss or whether they actually disappeared. We present here the first chronological study of a glacier located in the Central Pyrenees (N Spain), the Monte Perdido Glacier (MPG), carried out by different radiochronological techniques and their comparison with geochemical proxies with neighboring paleoclimate records. The result of the chronological model proves that the glacier endured during the Roman Period and the Medieval Climate Anomaly. The lack of ice from last 600 years indicates that the ice formed during the Little Ice Age has melted away. The analyses of the content of several metals of anthropogenic origin, such as Zn, Se, Cd, Hg, Pb, appear in low amounts in MPG ice, which further supports our age model in which the record from the industrial period is lost. This study confirms the exceptional warming of the last decades in the context of last two millennia. We demonstrate that we are facing an unprecedented retreat of the 55 Pyrenean glaciers which survival is compromised beyond a few decades
