    Ring-opening copolymerization (ROCOP): synthesis and properties of polyesters and polycarbonates

    Controlled routes to prepare polyesters and polycarbonates are of interest due to the widespread application of these materials and the opportunities provided to prepare new copolymers. Furthermore, ring-opening copolymerization may enable new poly(ester–carbonate) materials to be prepared which are inaccessible using alternative polymerizations. This review highlights recent advances in the ring-opening copolymerization catalysis, using epoxides coupled with anhydrides or CO2, to produce polyesters and polycarbonates. In particular, the structures and performances of various homogeneous catalysts are presented for the epoxide–anhydride copolymerization. The properties of the resultant polyesters and polycarbonates are presented and future opportunities highlighted for developments of both the materials and catalysts

    Improving InSAR geodesy using global atmospheric models

    Spatial and temporal variations of pressure, temperature and water vapor content in the atmosphere introduce significant confounding delays in Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) observations of ground deformation and bias estimatesof regional strain rates. Producing robust estimates of tropospheric delays remains one of the key challenges in increasing the accuracy of ground deformation measurements using InSAR. Recent studies revealed the efficiency of global atmospheric reanalysis to mitigate the impact of tropospheric delays, motivating further exploration of their potential. Here, we explore the effectiveness of these models in several geographic and tectonic settings on both single interferograms and time series analysis products. Both hydrostatic and wet contributions to the phase delay are important to account for. We validate these path delay corrections by comparing with estimates of vertically integrated atmospheric water vapor content derived from the passive multi-spectral imager MERIS, onboard the ENVISAT satellite. Generally, the performance of the prediction depends on the vigor of atmospheric turbulence. We discuss (1) how separating atmospheric and orbital contributions allows one to better measure long wavelength deformation, (2) how atmospheric delays affect measurements of surface deformation following earthquakes and (3) we show that such a method allows us to reduce biases in multi-year strain rate estimates by reducing the influence of unevenly sampled seasonal oscillations of the tropospheric delay

    Contracting automorphisms and L^p-cohomology in degree one

    We characterize those Lie groups, and algebraic groups over a local field of characteristic zero, whose first reduced L^p-cohomology is zero for all p>1, extending a result of Pansu. As an application, we obtain a description of Gromov-hyperbolic groups among those groups. In particular we prove that any non-elementary Gromov-hyperbolic algebraic group over a non-Archimedean local field of zero characteristic is quasi-isometric to a 3-regular tree.     Deglaciation history at the Alpine-Mediterranean transition (Argentera-Mercantour, SW Alps) from 10Be dating of moraines and glacially polished bedrock

    International audienceEstimating the extent and age of the last glacial maxima as well as the chronology of glacial recessions in various environmental contexts is key to source-to-sink studies and paleoclimate reconstructions. The Argentera-Mercantour massif being located at the transition between the Alps and the Mediterranean Sea, its deglaciation chronology can be compared to the sediment budget of the Var River marine delta. In this paper, the deglaciation is constrained by 13 new and 22 reassessed Cosmic-Ray Exposure (CRE) 10Be datings of moraines and polished crystalline bedrocks. These data allow for the first time to fully reconstruct the deglaciation history at the scale of the entire massif, in agreement with a major glacier recession at ca. 15 ka, at the onset of Bþlling transition. This contribution reveals a glacier–climate relationship more sensitive to warming phases in the southern Alps highlighted by a major decrease of glaciers after ca. 15 ka. This major deglaciation is correlated with a 2.5 fold decrease of sediment discharge of rivers into the Mediterranean Sea. Main deglaciation of the massif upper slopes (2,700-2,800 m a.s.l.) occurred after the LGM at 20.8-18.6 ka, followed by the lower slopes (2,300 m a.s.l.) at 15.3-14.2 ka. Finally, the flat polished surfaces above 2,600 m a.s.l. and the zones confined within narrow lateral valleys were likely affected by progressive ice melting of remaining debris covered glaciers and moraine erosion following the Younger Dryas re-advance stage between 12 and 8-9 ka. At lower elevations, a sediment core in the Vens Lake located at 2,300 m a.s.l., shows onset of lake sedimentation at ca. 14 ka and a transition towards a vegetated environment after 8 ka. Final stabilization of moraines occurred at 5 ka, which might reflect denudation acceleration during the Holocene humid phase

We first provide a comprehensive overview of the main reservoirs and mechanisms accounting for the contrasting variability of radiogenic isotope systematics in the sub-oceanic mantle and the relative homogeneity of its volcanic products, highlighting the paradigm change promoted by the use of Hf isotopes. Secondly, we summarize the different models invoked to explain the decoupling/(re-)coupling of Hf and Nd isotopes. Decoupling above the mantle array is often related to melt-peridotite interaction involving ancient protoliths, whereas coupled Hf-Nd or decoupling below the array are shown to be insufficient criteria to exclude the involvement of such protoliths. The Hf-Nd isotope variability of the SCLM is then addressed using a tectono-thermal classification based on the Global Lithospheric Architecture Mapping (GLAM) project. The extreme variability that characterizes the cratonic SCLM reflects the long-term preservation of depleted signatures overprinted by ancient and recent metasomatic episodes. Refertilized SCLM domains fingerprinted by variably decoupled Hf-Nd isotope systematics record subduction-related processes, which also appears to be instrumental in the recycling of continental material into the convective mantle. We show that there is a critical “chicken-and-egg” question underpinning debates on the spatio-temporal evolution of the SCLM: whether ancient signatures are pre-existing in the lithosphere (e.g. “lithospheric memory” during refertilization) or introduced into the convective mantle (i.e. recycling). Importantly, our compilation shows that fertile lithologies such as pyroxenites can also carry extremely depleted isotopic signatures. In particular, delamination of gravitationally unstable, pyroxenite-rich arc roots represents a volumetrically significant flux of material characterized by ancient radiogenic Hf and basalt-like Nd-isotope compositions that can, once recycled, account for the Hf variability observed between MORB suites. In this context, the characteristic HIMU-like or coupled Hf-Nd signatures observed in garnet-pyroxenite layers from orogenic peridotite massifs probably reflects long-term processing (re-coupling) of recycled lithospheric material in the convective mantle. In contrast, continental dispersal during rifting (± plume-related processes) appears to be mostly limited to buoyant SCLM remnants in the oceanic lithosphere, and these are unlikely to be recycled unless previously refertilized. This work brings a new geodynamic perspective to the ancient signatures identified as chemical and isotopic heterogeneities in the oceanic lithosphere and convective mantle.     Covariant affine integral quantization of the half-plane is studied and applied to the motion of a particle on the half-line. We examine the consequences of different quantizer operators built from weight functions on the half-plane. To illustrate the procedure, we examine two particular choices of the weight function, yielding thermal density operators and affine inversion respectively. The former gives rise to a temperature-dependent probability distribution on the half-plane whereas the later yields the usual canonical quantization and a quasi-probability distribution (affine Wigner function) which is real, marginal in both momentum p and position q.Comment: 36 pages, 10 figure

    La prévention et le sexting : un état des lieux

    Le dĂ©veloppement social et relationnel des adolescent-e-s et des jeunes adultes s’effectue aujourd’hui avec celui d’Internet et des nouvelles technologies. Dans ce contexte, les interactions et la transmission d’informations numĂ©riques sont facilitĂ©es et peu restreintes, ce qui peut mener Ă  un certain nombre d’enjeux en termes d’usage des technologies et de gestion de l’image numĂ©rique. Le sexting fait partie de ces problĂ©matiques. Cette pratique pouvant, de maniĂšre gĂ©nĂ©rale, se dĂ©finir comme l’échange Ă©lectronique de matĂ©riel personnel Ă  caractĂšre sexuel ou intime, peut parfois mener Ă  des situations dramatiques lorsque, par exemple, le contenu d’un message est transfĂ©rĂ© sans consentement Ă  d’autres personnes. AprĂšs avoir menĂ© une premiĂšre recherche exploratoire qualitative sur la pratique du sexting chez les jeunes, la thĂ©matique de la prĂ©vention relative au sexting s’est avĂ©rĂ©e particuliĂšrement intĂ©ressante Ă  approfondir. En effet, trĂšs peu de jeunes ont rapportĂ© se rappeler de messages ou campagnes de prĂ©vention autour du sexting spĂ©cifiquement. Au vu de ces rĂ©sultats, nous avons considĂ©rĂ© qu’il Ă©tait essentiel d’établir un Ă©tat des lieux de l’offre prĂ©ventive sur la thĂ©matique du sexting, plus particuliĂšrement dans le canton de Vaud, afin de vĂ©rifier les dires de certains jeunes sur le manque d’intervention et de discussion sur le sexting et ses possibles dĂ©rives. A travers cet Ă©tat des lieux et ce rapport, nous proposons donc un catalogue permettant de rĂ©pertorier et d’offrir une vue d’ensemble des diffĂ©rents acteurs-trices et ressources Ă  disposition dans le cadre de la prĂ©vention relative Ă  la pratique du sexting auprĂšs des jeunes
