Symmetry breaking perturbations and strange attractors
The asymmetrically forced, damped Duffing oscillator is introduced as a
prototype model for analyzing the homoclinic tangle of symmetric dissipative
systems with \textit{symmetry breaking} disturbances. Even a slight fixed
asymmetry in the perturbation may cause a substantial change in the asymptotic
behavior of the system, e.g. transitions from two sided to one sided strange
attractors as the other parameters are varied. Moreover, slight asymmetries may
cause substantial asymmetries in the relative size of the basins of attraction
of the unforced nearly symmetric attracting regions. These changes seems to be
associated with homoclinic bifurcations. Numerical evidence indicates that
\textit{strange attractors} appear near curves corresponding to specific
secondary homoclinic bifurcations. These curves are found using analytical
perturbational tools
Parabolic resonances and instabilities in near-integrable two degrees of freedom Hamiltonian flows
When an integrable two-degrees-of-freedom Hamiltonian system possessing a
circle of parabolic fixed points is perturbed, a parabolic resonance occurs. It
is proved that its occurrence is generic for one parameter families
(co-dimension one phenomenon) of near-integrable, t.d.o. systems. Numerical
experiments indicate that the motion near a parabolic resonance exhibits new
type of chaotic behavior which includes instabilities in some directions and
long trapping times in others. Moreover, in a degenerate case, near a {\it flat
parabolic resonance}, large scale instabilities appear. A model arising from an
atmospherical study is shown to exhibit flat parabolic resonance. This supplies
a simple mechanism for the transport of particles with {\it small} (i.e.
atmospherically relevant) initial velocities from the vicinity of the equator
to high latitudes. A modification of the model which allows the development of
atmospherical jets unfolds the degeneracy, yet traces of the flat instabilities
are clearly observed
Universal behaviour of entrainment due to coherent structures in turbulent shear flow
I suggest a solution to a persistent mystery in the physics of turbulent
shear flows: cumulus clouds rise to towering heights, practically without
entraining the ambient medium, while apparently similar turbulent jets in
general lose their identity within a small distance through entrainment and
mixing. From dynamical systems computations on a model chaotic vortical flow, I
show that entrainment and mixing due to coherent structures depend sensitively
on the relative speeds of different portions of the flow. A small change in
these speeds, effected for example by heating, drastically alters the sizes of
the KAM tori and the chaotic mixing region. The entrainment rate and, hence,
the lifetime of a turbulent shear flow, shows a universal, non-monotone

Precision Measurements of Stretching and Compression in Fluid Mixing
The mixing of an impurity into a flowing fluid is an important process in
many areas of science, including geophysical processes, chemical reactors, and
microfluidic devices. In some cases, for example periodic flows, the concepts
of nonlinear dynamics provide a deep theoretical basis for understanding
mixing. Unfortunately, the building blocks of this theory, i.e. the fixed
points and invariant manifolds of the associated Poincare map, have remained
inaccessible to direct experimental study, thus limiting the insight that could
be obtained. Using precision measurements of tracer particle trajectories in a
two-dimensional fluid flow producing chaotic mixing, we directly measure the
time-dependent stretching and compression fields. These quantities, previously
available only numerically, attain local maxima along lines coinciding with the
stable and unstable manifolds, thus revealing the dynamical structures that
control mixing. Contours or level sets of a passive impurity field are found to
be aligned parallel to the lines of large compression (unstable manifolds) at
each instant. This connection appears to persist as the onset of turbulence is

Menâs and Womenâs Health Beliefs Differentially Predict Coronary Heart Disease Incidence in a Population-Based Sample
Objective. To examine gender differences in the association between beliefs in heart disease preventability and 10-year incidence of coronary heart disease (CHD) in a population-based sample. Methods. A total of 2,688 Noninstitutionalized Nova Scotians without prior CHD enrolled in the Nova Scotia Health Study (NSHS95) and were followed for 10 years. Risk factors, health behaviors, and incident CHD were assessed. Participants responded âyesâ or ânoâ to a question about heart disease preventability. Survival models, adjusted for age, income, total and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and systolic blood pressure, were used to estimate the relation between health belief and incident CHD. Gender differences in the relation between health beliefs and health behaviors were assessed. Results. Gender was a significant moderator of the relation between belief and CHD incidence; specifically, women who believed heart disease could be prevented were less likely to have incident CHD events compared with women who believed heart disease could not be prevented (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.36, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.24-0.55, p < .001). This relation was not found for men. Belief was also related to smoking behavior for women (ÎČ = â0.70, odds ratio [OR] = 0.50, 95% CI = 0.33-0.74, p = .001) but not for men. Smoking significantly mediated the relation between health beliefs and incident CHD for women (z = â1.96, p = .05), but not for men. Conclusion. Health belief in prevention and subsequent smoking was an important independent predictor of incident CHD in women but not in men
Stock assessment of the blue crab in Chesapeake Bay 2005: Final report
The blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) is an icon for the Chesapeake Bay region. The commercial fisheries for blue crab in the Bay remain one of the most valuable fishery sectors in the Bay. Ecologically, blue crab is an important component of the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem. Thus, sound management to ensure the sustainability of this resource is critical.
The first bay wide assessment for blue crab was undertaken in 1995 and completed in 1997. It concluded that the stock was moderately to fully exploited and at average levels of abundance. Subsequent to this assessment concerns over the continuing status of blue crab were raised because of declines in abundance and harvests. In response to concerns from stakeholders, a Bi-State Blue Crab Advisory Committee was established in 1996. Work by this committee lead to the establishment in 2001 of biomass and exploitation thresholds and an exploitation target reference points. Since 2001, the status of the blue crab stock has been updated annually and its status determined relative to the reference points. Over the ensuing years, the approach to determining the status of blue crab in the Chesapeake Bay has been modified, but a new inclusive assessment has not been conducted
Computational Method for Phase Space Transport with Applications to Lobe Dynamics and Rate of Escape
Lobe dynamics and escape from a potential well are general frameworks
introduced to study phase space transport in chaotic dynamical systems. While
the former approach studies how regions of phase space are transported by
reducing the flow to a two-dimensional map, the latter approach studies the
phase space structures that lead to critical events by crossing periodic orbit
around saddles. Both of these frameworks require computation with curves
represented by millions of points-computing intersection points between these
curves and area bounded by the segments of these curves-for quantifying the
transport and escape rate. We present a theory for computing these intersection
points and the area bounded between the segments of these curves based on a
classification of the intersection points using equivalence class. We also
present an alternate theory for curves with nontransverse intersections and a
method to increase the density of points on the curves for locating the
intersection points accurately.The numerical implementation of the theory
presented herein is available as an open source software called Lober. We used
this package to demonstrate the application of the theory to lobe dynamics that
arises in fluid mechanics, and rate of escape from a potential well that arises

The relationship between video display terminals (VDTs) usage and dermatologic manifestations : a cross sectional study
BACKGROUND: Recently, it has been observed that Video Display Terminals (VDTs) usage for long periods can cause some dermatological manifestations on the face. An analytical cross-sectional study was designed in order to determine this relationship. METHODS: In this study, 600 office workers were chosen randomly from an organization in Tehran (Iran). The subjects were then divided into two groups based on their exposure to VDTs. 306 workers were considered exposure negative (non VDT user) who worked less than 7 hours a week with VDTs. The remainders 294 were exposure-positive, who worked 7 hours or more with VDTs. The frequency of dermatologic manifestations was compared in these two groups. RESULTS: In the exposure-positive and exposure-negative groups, the frequency of these dermatologic manifestations were 27 and 5 respectively. After statistical analysis, a P.value of < 0.05 was obtained indicating a statistically significant difference between these two groups for dermatological manifestations. CONCLUSION: According to our study, there is a relationship between dermatologic manifestations on the face and exposure to VDTs
