Early retired or automatized? Evidence from the survey of health, ageing and retirement in Europe
This paper measures the implications of the automation process in the labour market for the early retirement
decisions in 26 European countries. In order to perform the analysis, we use microdata from the Survey of Health,
Ageing and Retirement in Europe, occupation-level data on automation degree and automation risk and a
technological classification of occupations in 4 terrains. We find that the current technological change is playing a
significant role in the early retirement decisions, although it affects heterogeneously certain groups in the sample
(regarding gender, education level and job status). This fact leads to a contradiction between governments trying
to delay retirement ages and labour markets trying to expel workers earlier. Therefore, we conclude that, in order
to elaborate policies on ageing and retirement, the effect of new labour-saving technologies in older worker’s
decisions must be taken into account. We propose that the delay in statutory retirement ages should be
accompanied by training programs and/or policies promoting self-employment for workers at risk of ending their
working lives prematurely. Furthermore, the programs aimed to relocate middle-age workers displaced from
their original occupations should focus on finding a new occupation among those which are less affected by
automation processes. This work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation

The impact of artificial intelligence in the early retirement decision
This paper examines the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on early retirement
(ER) decisions in Europe. For the analysis, we utilize microdata from the Survey
of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe, along with occupation-level data on
AI advances and AI exposure. Initially, we investigate the influence of AI advances
and AI exposure separately, finding in both instances a significant reduction in ER
likelihood, though this only applies to workers with higher education. Subsequently,
we explore the interaction between AI advances and AI exposure concerning
ER probability. This interaction proves critical in determining AI’s impact on ER
transitions. Specifically, we observe a significant reduction in ER probabilities for
workers whose occupations exhibit high levels of AI advances and high expectations
for further implementation of this technology in the future. Finally, we jointly
analyse the interaction between AI advances, AI exposure, and education level. This
analysis highlights that workers’ ER probabilities may either increase or decrease in
response to the AI revolution, depending on their education level and the characteristics
of their occupations in terms of AI advances and AI exposure.
This study describes and evaluates a teaching experience that combines the use of financial press with the ‘writing to learn’ method, within the subject Intermediate Macroeconomics. The subject belongs to a field of economics which is characterised by a particularly high degree of mathematical abstraction and in which the accurate assimilation of theoretical content thus becomes essential. Thanks to the establishment of a collaboration agreement, students are offered the chance to publish press articles related to economic issues in a special supplement of El Periódico de Huelva. When comparing the academic performance of students who did or did not participate in the experience, the results appear to confirm the positive effects of using methods that promote active learning, such as the one used in this experienceUniversidad de Huelva: Proyectos de Innovación e Investigación para la mejora de la Docencia UniversitariaDepartamento de Economía General y Estadístic
The underground economy in times of crisis: an analysis of undeclared work in Europe
This study analyzes undeclared work as a key portion of the shadow economy in the EU-28, with special focus on its incidence, dynamics, structure, differences across countries and underlying determinants. To this end, linear regression and binary discrete choice models are applied to microdata drawn from 2 special Eurobarometers which are designed to explore undeclared work phenomenon in the years 2007 and 2013. Our results stress the importance of (i) the individual assessment of irregular and
individualistic behaviours; (ii) the perceived risk of being detected undertaking paid undeclared work; (iii) the occupation; and (iv) the aggregated conditions, as determinants of undeclared work. The implications of these results for the existing policy options for dealing with the shadow economy are also discussed
This paper describes a project of Educational Innovation that presents a workshop on economic press as part of the subjects of Economics taught in the degree in Business (DCE) and the degree in Labour Studies (CCTT) at the University of Huelva, Spain. The main objective of this workshop is to promote both self-regulated, collaborative learning, and motivation in the classroom. The methodology used in this workshop consists of guided study of economic news to help consolidate knowledge taught in the theory classes and to foster the application of theory to concrete problems, as well as to encourage reasoning and analysis of different articles in focus groups. The workshop was assessed by means of a questionnaire that allows identification of the impact of theoretical concepts on understanding and on student assessment and satisfaction. The results reveal that the workshop stimulates understanding of the theoretical concepts presented in economic theory.
POU1F1 transcription factor induces metabolic reprogramming and breast cancer progression via LDHA regulation
Metabolic reprogramming is considered hallmarks of cancer. Aerobic glycolysis in tumors cells has been well-known for almost a century, but specific factors that regulate lactate generation and the effects of lactate in both cancer cells and stroma are not yet well understood. In the present study using breast cancer cell lines, human primary cultures of breast tumors, and immune deficient murine models, we demonstrate that the POU1F1 transcription factor is functionally and clinically related to both metabolic reprogramming in breast cancer cells and fibroblasts activation. Mechanistically, we demonstrate that POU1F1 transcriptionally regulates the lactate dehydrogenase A (LDHA) gene. LDHA catalyzes pyruvate into lactate instead of leading into the tricarboxylic acid cycle. Lactate increases breast cancer cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. In addition, it activates normal-associated fibroblasts (NAFs) into cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs). Conversely, LDHA knockdown in breast cancer cells that overexpress POU1F1 decreases tumor volume and [18F]FDG uptake in tumor xenografts of mice. Clinically, POU1F1 and LDHA expression correlate with relapse- and metastasis-free survival. Our data indicate that POU1F1 induces a metabolic reprogramming through LDHA regulation in human breast tumor cells, modifying the phenotype of both cancer cells and fibroblasts to promote cancer progressionThis study was supported by FEDER/Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades- Agencia Estatal de Investigación-PGC2018-100776-B-I00 and from Conselleria de Cultura, Educación e Ordenacion Universitaria (GPC2014/001), AM-O was supported by an FPU grant (Ministerio de Educación—FPU14/00548)S
