The Role of Multimodality Images Toward the Detection of Synchronous Breast Cancer (SBC) on a Woman with a Family History of Breast Cancer: a Case Report

Ultrasound-modulated optical tomography using four-wave mixing in photorefractive polymers

Ultrasound-modulated optical tomography uses a well focused ultrasound beam to modulate diffuse light inside soft biological tissues. This modality combines the advantages of ultrasound resolution with optical contrast. However, because of the low ultrasound modulation efficiency, the large background of un-modulated photons gives a low signal-to-noise ratio. Here we report a technique for detection of ultrasound-modulated light using a phase conjugated signal generated by four-wave mixing in a photorefractive polymer. The experimental results demonstrate the potential of this method to detect ultrasound-modulated optical signals in a highly scattering media with an excellent signal-to-noise ratio

The impact of Behçet's disease on intimate relationships in women: A qualitative study.

OBJECTIVE: Behçet's disease is a rare and incurable condition where the body's immune system attacks healthy tissue. Behçet's can cause blood clots and ulcerations to form in every organ and system in the body, including deep and painful genital ulceration. The psychological impact of the disease on intimacy and relationships is unexplored. This study aimed to explore how the disease impacts on female patients' intimate partner relationships. METHODS: Participants were seven female, UK patients with Behçet's disease who were in committed relationships. In depth, semi-structured interviews lasting approximately 80 minutes were conducted via video conferencing about participants' sexual functioning and intimate relationships. Data was analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. RESULTS: Patients' sexual relationships and intimacy were impacted by issues due to lack of knowledge of symptoms (misdiagnosis of herpes), issues due to symptoms (genital manifestations, painful sex, exhaustion), difficulties communicating with medical professionals, medication, partner support, and support from fellow Behçet's patients. DISCUSSION: Female Behçet's patients are at risk of developing psychological problems with intimacy due to symptoms, lack of knowledge of symptoms, and negative impacts of medication. Intimacy needs to be discussed in medical consultations so these issues can be addressed before a lack of intimacy negatively impacts relationships

Cáncer del tracto biliar; Estudio de entrevista; Investigación cualitativaCàncer del tracte biliar; Estudi d'entrevista; Recerca qualitativaBiliary tract cancer; Interview study; Qualitative researchIntroduction Patients living with biliary tract cancer (BTC) experience a decline in health-related quality of life (HRQoL). This study aimed to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the patient experience of BTC-related signs/symptoms and the impacts of these on daily functioning and HRQoL. Methods Patients with BTC participated in qualitative semi-structured concept elicitation interviews. Signs/symptoms and impacts of BTC were initially explored by targeted literature searches and interviews with five clinicians. Patient interviews were transcribed and coded using qualitative research software. Concept saturation was assessed over five interview waves. A sign/symptom or impact was defined as “salient” if mentioned by ≥ 50% of patients, with a mean disturbance rating of ≥ 5 (0–10 scale). A conceptual model of the patient experience of BTC-related signs/symptoms and impacts was produced. Results Twenty-three patients from the USA (78% women; median age: 54 years), diagnosed as having early (n = 3), locally advanced (n = 11) or metastatic (n = 9) disease, were interviewed. Sixty-six signs/symptoms and 12 impacts were identified. Of these, 46 signs/symptoms and 8 impacts were not identified from the targeted literature or clinician interviews. Concept saturation was reached by the fourth of five interview waves. Fourteen disease-related signs/symptoms (including fatigue/lack of energy, abdominal pain, lack of appetite, insomnia and diarrhoea) and three impacts (physical, emotional and cognitive impacts) were deemed “salient”. The conceptual model included 50 signs/symptoms and 12 impacts. Conclusion Patients with BTC reported a range of signs/symptoms and impacts that negatively affect daily functioning and HRQoL.This project was funded by AstraZeneca, Gaithersburg, MD, USA. Anterior relapse or posterior drift after intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy

This study aimed to evaluate the factors contributing to postoperative anterior relapse or posterior drift of the distal segment after intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy. A retrospective cohort study was conducted which included 31 patients who underwent setback surgery for mandibular prognathism by the intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy technique. Uni- and multivariate analyses were performed to determine the association of potential explanatory variables (sex, age, magnitude of setback, differences in setback magnitude between sides (right/left), duration of splint use, Angle’s classification of malocclusion, mandibular angle, and tightness of occlusion of the molars) with positional changes in the distal segment. The setback magnitude was only significant factor affecting (P = 0.015) for posterior drift, with significant posterior in setback magnitudes of less than 7.25 mm. Posterior drift after intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy is less likely if setback magnitude exceeds 7.25 mm. For setbacks less than 7.25 mm, posterior drift should either be carefully corrected postoperatively, or an alternative surgical technique should be used. The setback magnitude showed a significant association with the risk of posterior drift following intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy, and the determined cut-off value may serve as a predictor for postoperative outcomes
