Semiparametric Cross Entropy for rare-event simulation
The Cross Entropy method is a well-known adaptive importance sampling method
for rare-event probability estimation, which requires estimating an optimal
importance sampling density within a parametric class. In this article we
estimate an optimal importance sampling density within a wider semiparametric
class of distributions. We show that this semiparametric version of the Cross
Entropy method frequently yields efficient estimators. We illustrate the
excellent practical performance of the method with numerical experiments and
show that for the problems we consider it typically outperforms alternative
schemes by orders of magnitude

Superfluid Optomechanics with Phononic Nanostructures
In quantum optomechanics, finding materials and strategies to limit losses
has been crucial to the progress of the field. Recently, superfluid 4He was
proposed as a promising mechanical element for quantum optomechanics. This
quantum fluid shows highly desirable properties (e.g. extremely low acoustic
loss) for a quantum optomechanical system. In current implementations,
superfluid optomechanical systems suffer from external sources of loss, which
spoils the quality factor of resonators. In this work, we propose a new
implementation, exploiting nanofluidic confinement. Our approach, based on
acoustic resonators formed within phononic nanostructures, aims at limiting
radiation losses to preserve the intrinsic properties of superfluid 4He. In
this work, we estimate the optomechanical system parameters. Using recent
theory, we derive the expected quality factors for acoustic resonators in
different thermodynamic conditions. We calculate the sources of loss induced by
the phononic nanostructures with numerical simulations. Our results indicate
the feasibility of the proposed approach in a broad range of parameters, which
opens new prospects for more complex geometries.Comment: 20 pages, 19 figure
One-dimensional sigma-models with N=5,6,7,8 off-shell supersymmetries
We computed the actions for the 1D N=5 sigma-models with respect to the two
inequivalent (2,8,6) multiplets. 4 supersymmetry generators are manifest, while
the constraint originated by imposing the 5-th supersymmetry automatically
induces a full N=8 off-shell invariance. The resulting action coincides in the
two cases and corresponds to a conformally flat 2D target satisfying a special
geometry of rigid type. To obtain these results we developed a computational
method (for Maple 11) which does not require the notion of superfields and is
instead based on the nowadays available list of the inequivalent
representations of the 1D N-extended supersymmetry. Its application to
systematically analyze the sigma-models off-shell invariant actions for the
remaining N=5,6,7,8 (k,8,8-k) multiplets, as well as for the N>8
representations, only requires more cumbersome computations.Comment: 10 pages; one reference adde
Division Algebras and Extended N=2,4,8 SuperKdVs
The first example of an N=8 supersymmetric extension of the KdV equation is
here explicitly constructed. It involves 8 bosonic and 8 fermionic fields. It
corresponds to the unique N=8 solution based on a generalized hamiltonian
dynamics with (generalized) Poisson brackets given by the Non-associative N=8
Superconformal Algebra. The complete list of inequivalent classes of
parametric-dependent N=3 and N=4 superKdVs obtained from the ``Non-associative
N=8 SCA" is also furnished. Furthermore, a fundamental domain characterizing
the class of inequivalent N=4 superKdVs based on the "minimal N=4 SCA" is
given.Comment: 14 pages, LaTe
Development of biomass fast proximate analysis by thermogravimetric scale
[EN] EN norms set the methods for determining the ash and volatile content in biomass. These establish the use of a muffle to heat the samples at temperatures of 550 degrees C and 900 degrees C respectively, with a minimum analysis time of 4 h as standard method. The objective of this work was to reduce significantly the analysis times, making very short heating periods using a thermogravimetric scale (TGA), and to apply an equation to the residual weight to obtain the weight of ash, volatiles and fixed carbon in biomass samples. We analyzed the factors: the temperature ramp, atmosphere and airflow in the determination. In this work new validated methods were developed with an analysis time of 10-20 min.
