    Molecular identification of Fusarium species isolated from transgenic insect-resistant cotton plants in Mexicali valley, Baja California

    Cotton production in the Mexicali valley is adversely affected by wilt and root rot disease associated with Fusarium species. In the present study, we sought to isolate and identify the Fusarium species in the rhizosphere of transgenic insect-resistant cotton plants grown in the Mexicali valley. Our analyses isolated four native fungi from the rhizosphere of cotton plants, namely, T-ICA01, T-ICA03, T-ICA04, and T-ICA08. These fungal isolates were categorized as belonging to Fusarium solani using their phenotypic characteristics and ITS region sequence data. Examination of the infection index showed that T-ICA03 and T-ICA04 caused systemic colonization (90%) of seeds followed by the occurrence of radicle and coleoptile decay. In contrast, T-ICA08 strain was less pathogenic against seed tissues (40%) in comparison to the other strains isolated. Our study showed that in transgenic insect-resistant cotton the disease “Fusarium wilt” is caused by the fungus, F. solani. Future studies are necessary to characterize the F. solani populations to determine whether phenological stages might influence the genetic diversity of the fungal populations present

    SN 2021hpr and its two siblings in the Cepheid calibrator galaxy NGC 3147: A hierarchical BayeSN analysis of a Type Ia supernova trio, and a Hubble constant constraint

    To improve Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) standardisability, the consistency of distance estimates to siblings -- SNe in the same host galaxy -- should be investigated. We present Young Supernova Experiment Pan-STARRS-1 grizygrizy photometry of SN 2021hpr, the third spectroscopically confirmed SN Ia in the high-stellar-mass Cepheid-calibrator galaxy NGC 3147. We analyse NGC 3147's trio of SN Ia siblings: SNe 1997bq, 2008fv and 2021hpr, using a new version of the BayeSN model of SN Ia spectral-energy distributions, retrained simultaneously using optical-NIR BgVrizYJHBgVrizYJH (0.35--1.8 μ\mum) data. The distance estimates to each sibling are consistent, with a sample standard deviation \lesssim0.01 mag, much smaller than the total intrinsic scatter in the training sample: σ00.09\sigma_0\approx0.09 mag. Fitting normal SN Ia siblings in three additional galaxies, we estimate a \approx90% probability that the siblings' intrinsic scatter is smaller than σ0\sigma_0. We build a new hierarchical model that fits light curves of siblings in a single galaxy simultaneously; this yields more precise estimates of the common distance and the dust parameters. Fitting the trio for a common dust law shape yields RV=2.69±0.52R_V=2.69\pm0.52. Our work motivates future hierarchical modelling of more siblings, to tightly constrain their intrinsic scatter, and better understand SN-host correlations. Finally, we estimate the Hubble constant, using a Cepheid distance to NGC 3147, the siblings trio, and 109 Hubble flow (0.01<zCMB<0.080.01 < z_{\rm{CMB}} < 0.08) SNe Ia; marginalising over the siblings' and population's intrinsic scatters, and the peculiar velocity dispersion, yields H0=77.9±6.5 km s1Mpc1H_0=77.9\pm6.5 \text{ km s}^{-1}\text{Mpc}^{-1}.Comment: Submitted to MNRAS; 30 pages, 22 figure

    Measurement of the Crab Nebula Spectrum Past 100 TeV with HAWC

    We present TeV gamma-ray observations of the Crab Nebula, the standard reference source in ground-based gamma-ray astronomy, using data from the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Gamma-Ray Observatory. In this analysis we use two independent energy-estimation methods that utilize extensive air shower variables such as the core position, shower angle, and shower lateral energy distribution. In contrast, the previously published HAWC energy spectrum roughly estimated the shower energy with only the number of photomultipliers triggered. This new methodology yields a much improved energy resolution over the previous analysis and extends HAWC's ability to accurately measure gamma-ray energies well beyond 100 TeV. The energy spectrum of the Crab Nebula is well fit to a log parabola shape (dNdE=ϕ0(E/7 TeV)αβln(E/7 TeV))\left(\frac{dN}{dE} = \phi_0 \left(E/\textrm{7 TeV}\right)^{-\alpha-\beta\ln\left(E/\textrm{7 TeV}\right)}\right) with emission up to at least 100 TeV. For the first estimator, a ground parameter that utilizes fits to the lateral distribution function to measure the charge density 40 meters from the shower axis, the best-fit values are ϕo\phi_o=(2.35±\pm0.040.21+0.20^{+0.20}_{-0.21})×\times1013^{-13} (TeV cm2^2 s)1^{-1}, α\alpha=2.79±\pm0.020.03+0.01^{+0.01}_{-0.03}, and β\beta=0.10±\pm0.010.03+0.01^{+0.01}_{-0.03}. For the second estimator, a neural network which uses the charge distribution in annuli around the core and other variables, these values are ϕo\phi_o=(2.31±\pm0.020.17+0.32^{+0.32}_{-0.17})×\times1013^{-13} (TeV cm2^2 s)1^{-1}, α\alpha=2.73±\pm0.020.02+0.03^{+0.03}_{-0.02}, and β\beta=0.06±\pm0.01±\pm0.02. The first set of uncertainties are statistical; the second set are systematic. Both methods yield compatible results. These measurements are the highest-energy observation of a gamma-ray source to date.Comment: published in Ap

    The Milky Way Bulge: Observed properties and a comparison to external galaxies

    The Milky Way bulge offers a unique opportunity to investigate in detail the role that different processes such as dynamical instabilities, hierarchical merging, and dissipational collapse may have played in the history of the Galaxy formation and evolution based on its resolved stellar population properties. Large observation programmes and surveys of the bulge are providing for the first time a look into the global view of the Milky Way bulge that can be compared with the bulges of other galaxies, and be used as a template for detailed comparison with models. The Milky Way has been shown to have a box/peanut (B/P) bulge and recent evidence seems to suggest the presence of an additional spheroidal component. In this review we summarise the global chemical abundances, kinematics and structural properties that allow us to disentangle these multiple components and provide constraints to understand their origin. The investigation of both detailed and global properties of the bulge now provide us with the opportunity to characterise the bulge as observed in models, and to place the mixed component bulge scenario in the general context of external galaxies. When writing this review, we considered the perspectives of researchers working with the Milky Way and researchers working with external galaxies.     Identificación de las prioridades nacionales de investigación en COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) y otros virus respiratorios con potencial pandémico: Descripción del proceso peruano

    Research priorities are a fundamental component of national health research systems. In the year 2021, the National Institute of Health led the process of identifying the "national research priorities in COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) and other respiratory viruses with pandemic potential: Preparing for the next pandemic, 2022-2026”. The process was developed following the previous methodology for identification of research priorities used by the Instituto Nacional de Salud (Perú), which was to be adapted to a virtual environment, with four phases. Six strategic objectives to be achieved were formulated and served as an umbrella for the identification of national priorities, a total of 21 research priorities were identified. It is recommended that a plan for the implementation of research priorities be formulated and executed and that the Ministry of Health, through its different instances, take the necessary steps to obtain and allocate resources to the generation of evidence within the framework of priorities.Las prioridades de investigación son un componente fundamental de los sistemas nacionales de investigación en salud. En el año 2021, el Instituto Nacional de Salud lideró el proceso de identificación de las “prioridades nacionales de investigación en COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) y otros virus respiratorios con potencial pandémico: Preparándonos para la siguiente pandemia, 2022-2026”. El proceso siguió la metodología previamente utilizada por el Instituto Nacional de Salud (Perú) para la identificación de prioridades de identificación, la que se tuvo que adaptar a un entorno totalmente virtual, con cuatro fases. Se formularon seis objetivos estratégicos a alcanzar y que sirvieron de paraguas para la identificación de las prioridades nacionales, se identificaron en total 21 prioridades de investigación. Se recomienda se formule y ejecute un plan de implementación de las prioridades de investigación y que el Ministerio de Salud a través de sus diferentes instancias realice las gestiones necesarias para conseguir y destinar recursos a la generación de evidencia en el marco de las prioridades

    Prostate response to prolactin in sexually active male rats

    BACKGROUND: The prostate is a key gland in the sexual physiology of male mammals. Its sensitivity to steroid hormones is widely known, but its response to prolactin is still poorly known. Previous studies have shown a correlation between sexual behaviour, prolactin release and prostate physiology. Thus, here we used the sexual behaviour of male rats as a model for studying this correlation. Hence, we developed experimental paradigms to determine the influence of prolactin on sexual behaviour and prostate organization of male rats. METHODS: In addition to sexual behaviour recordings, we developed the ELISA procedure to quantify the serum level of prolactin, and the hematoxilin-eosin technique for analysis of the histological organization of the prostate. Also, different experimental manipulations were carried out; they included pituitary grafts, and haloperidol and ovine prolactin treatments. Data were analyzed with a One way ANOVA followed by post hoc Dunnet test if required. RESULTS: Data showed that male prolactin has a basal level with two peaks at the light-dark-light transitions. Consecutive ejaculations increased serum prolactin after the first ejaculation, which reached the highest level after the second, and started to decrease after the third ejaculation. These normal levels of prolactin did not induce any change at the prostate tissue. However, treatments for constant elevations of serum prolactin decreased sexual potency and increased the weight of the gland, the alveoli area and the epithelial cell height. Treatments for transient elevation of serum prolactin did not affect the sexual behaviour of males, but triggered these significant effects mainly at the ventral prostate. CONCLUSION: The prostate is a sexual gland that responds to prolactin. Mating-induced prolactin release is required during sexual encounters to activate the epithelial cells in the gland. Here we saw a precise mechanism controlling the release of prolactin during ejaculations that avoid the detrimental effects produced by constant levels. However, we showed that minor elevations of prolactin which do not affect the sexual behaviour of males, produced significant changes at the prostate epithelium that could account for triggering the development of hyperplasia or cancer. Thus, it is suggested that minute elevations of serum prolactin in healthy subjects are at the etiology of prostate abnormal growth
