For the present work, a 3-D numerical model has been implemented to simulate the thermal and fluid fields induced by an enclosure fire in an atrium and for smoke exhaust system assessment. This study is focused on the ‘Fire Atrium’, a new full-scale fire test facility of the Technological Metal Centre in Murcia, Spain. It is an aluminium prismatic squared base building of 19.5 m x 19.5 m x 20 m with several vents arranged in its walls and four exhaust fans at the roof

Provider Education to Increase Knowledge PrEP Prescribing in Older Adults who Identify as Members of the LGBTQ Community

Abstract Background: Reducing the spread of HIV can be facilitated through the use of pre-exposure prophylaxis or PrEP. Despite this, there are significant gaps in provider knowledge of PrEP prescribing. This problem is exacerbated when older adults, who are at greater risk for contracting the disease, require care. Objective: The purpose of this quality improvement project was to increase provider knowledge of PrEP prescribing in older adult patients who identify as members of the LGBTQ community. Methods: Using a pre-/post-intervention framework, providers working at a primary care clinic were recruited to participate in the project. Baseline knowledge of PrEP prescribing and sexual health care in older adults was assessed and this was followed by an educational intervention on these topics. Following education, provider knowledge was reassessed. Results: A total of eight providers were recruited for the project including six females (75%). The mean pre-test knowledge scores before the educational intervention was 55 and increased to 95 following education. Inferential comparison of the scores using a Mann-Whitney U-test indicated that the change in scores was statistically significant (P \u3c .001). Conclusions: Provider education of PrEP and PrEP prescribing in older adults is an evidence-based solution that can improve provider knowledge of the topic. The results suggest that action should be taken to maintain the project at the practice site while also seeking additional sites to expand provider education on PrEP

Proyecto de Graduación (Licenciatura en Ingeniería en Construcción) Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica, Escuela de Ingeniería en Construcción, 2010.As a result of this project, we created a tool oriented to this material to this material so important to the sector of construction called timber. This application facilitates the design progress of raw material under LRFD and ASD methods. The application was made in excel 2007 that generates summary sheets that work in turn reports to calculate and distinct for the use of professionals involved with this type of design. During the construction of the tool took into consideration the criteria of professionals involved with the design of wood. In addition to a series of information related to this issue that one way or another were the basis for reaching an appropriate application to reduce delivery times of projects. The completion of the project leads us to recognize the importance of such a tool, to facilitate decision marking involved in this project developed which involve important raw material in the field of construction. All this for the sole purpose of optimizing as much as possible surrounding the timber is sold nationwide.Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica. Escuela Ingeniería en Construcción

Quiescent and coherent cores from gravoturbulent fragmentation

[abridged] We investigate the velocity structure of protostellar cores that result from non-magnetic numerical models of the gravoturbulent fragmentation of molecular cloud material. A large fraction of the cores analyzed are ``quiescent'', and more than half are identified as ``coherent''. The fact that dynamically evolving cores in highly supersonic turbulent flows can be quiescent may be understood because cores lie at the stagnation points of convergent turbulent flows, where compression is at a maximum, and relative velocity differences are at a minimum. The coherence may be due to an observational effect related to the length and concentration of the material contributing to the line. The velocity dispersion of the our cores often has its local maximum at small offsets from the column density maximum, suggesting that the core is the dense region behind a shock. Such a configuration is often found in observations of molecular cloud cores, and argues in favor of the gravoturbulent scenario of stellar birth as it is not expected in star-formation models based on magnetic mediation. Cores with collapsed objects tend to be near equipartition between their gravitational and kinetic energies, while cores without collapsed objects tend to be gravitationally unbound, suggesting that gravitational collapse occurs immediately after gravity becomes dominant. Finally, cores in simulations driven at large scales are more frequently quiescent and coherent, and have more realistic ratios of Mvir/MM_{\rm vir}/M, supporting the notion that molecular cloud turbulence is driven at large scales.Comment: ApJ, in pres

Wetting of Nematic Liquid Crystals on Crenellated Substrates: A Frank–Oseen Approach

    Get PDF
We revisit the wetting of nematic liquid crystals in contact with crenellated substrates, studied previously using the Landau–de Gennes formalism. However, due to computational limitations, the characteristic length scales of the substrate relief considered in that study limited to less than 100 nematic correlation lengths. The current work uses an extended Frank–Oseen formalism, which includes not only the free-energy contribution due to the elastic deformations but also the surface tension contributions and, if disclinations or other orientational field singularities are present, their core contributions. Within this framework, which was successfully applied to the anchoring transitions of a nematic liquid crystal in contact with structured substrates, we extended the study to much larger length scales including the macroscopic scale. In particular, we analyzed the interfacial states and the transitions between them at the nematic–isotropic coexistence

Exploring the Interplay between CAD and FreeFem++ as an Energy Decision-Making Tool for Architectural Design

    Get PDF
The energy modelling software tools commonly used for architectural purposes do not allow a straightforward real-time implementation within the architectural design programs. In addition, the surrounding exterior spaces of the building, including the inner courtyards, hardly present a specific treatment distinguishing these spaces from the general external temperature in the thermal simulations. This is a clear disadvantage when it comes to streamlining the design process in relation to the whole-building energy optimization. In this context, the present study aims to demonstrate the advantages of the FreeFem++ open source program for performing simulations in architectural environments. These simulations include microclimate tests that describe the interactions between a building architecture and its local exterior. The great potential of this mathematical tool can be realized through its complete system integration within CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software such as SketchUp or AutoCAD. In order to establish the suitability of FreeFem++ for the performance of simulations, the most widely employed energy simulation tools able to consider a proposed architectural geometry in a specific environment are compared. On the basis of this analysis, it can be concluded that FreeFem++ is the only program displaying the best features for the thermal performance simulation of these specific outdoor spaces, excluding the currently unavailable easy interaction with architectural drawing programs. The main contribution of this research is, in fact, the enhancement of FreeFem++ usability by proposing a simple intuitive method for the creation of building geometries and their respective meshing (pre-processing). FreeFem++ is also considered a tool for data analysis (post-processing) able to help engineers and architects with building energy-efficiency-related tasks
