    Modeling pressure oscillations in Ramjets

    Pressure oscillations in ramjet engines are approximated as one-dimensional motions and treated within linear acoustics. The exhaust nozzle is represented by the admittance function for a short choked nozzle. New results have been obtained for the quasi-steady response of a normal shock wave in the diffuser. Acoustic fields in the inlet region and in the combustion chamber are matched to provide an analytical expression of the criterion for linear stability. Combustion processes are accommodated but not treated in detail. As examples, data are discussed for two liquid-fueled engines, one having axial dump and one having side dumps

    Results are presented of wind tunnel test conducted Hypersonic Shock Tunnel using a 0.010-scale 140A/B configuration orbiter model designated 51-0. The test objectives were: (1) to obtain force and moment data at various Mach numbers and Reynolds numbers from which viscous interaction effects on stability and control may be determined. (1) To provide flow visualization data from which the effects of control surface separation may be evaluated. and (3) To obtain pressure data in conjunction with force and moment data to assist in analyzing viscous interaction and flow separation effects. Data were obtained at angles-of-attack of 20 deg, 30 deg, 40 deg, and 50 deg. The Mach number range covered was from 10 to 16 and the viscous interaction parameter range was from 0.01 to 0.06

    Analysis of Performance Indices for Simulated Skeleton Descents

    In the winter Olympic sport of Skeleton, sliders sprint and load themselves onto the sled facing head forwards. The slider uses primarily their shoulders and torso to apply control to the direction of the sled as it progressively gains speed during its descent. These small control course keeping maneuvers alongside more severe use of toe tapping onto the ice will help determine the eventual trajectory of the sled. It is therefore of interest to consider for a possible trajectory what control actions will determine the fastest descent time and in particular what metrics should be examined. In this paper a three degree-of-freedom simulation has been developed to analyse the influence of different control strategies on the descent time of a bob-skeleton. A proportional-derivative (PD) controller is used to steer the simulation down a representation of the Igls ice-track. Parametric variations of the simulation's performance were analysed and compared to identify possible correlations for controllers assist the design of an optimal controller. Analysis of the results have identified positive correlations between descent time, transverse distance travelled and energy dissipation establishing that the fastest descent time is achieved by minimising the energy lost through the descent

    Repetitive control is a methodology for the tracking of a periodic reference signal. This paper develops a new approach to repetitive control systems design using receding horizon control with frequency decomposition of the reference signal. Moreover, design and implementation issues for this form of repetitive predictive control are investigated from the perspectives of controller complexity and the effects of measurement noise. The analysis is supported by a simulation study on a multi-input multi-output robot arm where the model has been constructed from measured frequency response data, and experimental results from application to an industrial AC motor

    PACOSS program overview and status

    Many future civilian and military large space structures (LSS) will have as performance objectives stringent pointing accuracies, short settling times, relatively fast response requirements, or combinations thereof. Many of these structures will be large, light weight, and will exhibit high structural modal density at low frequency and within the control bandwidth. Although it is possible in principle to achieve structural vibration control through purely active means, experience with complex structures has shown that the realities of plant model inaccuracies and sensor/actuator dynamics frequently combine to produce substandard performance. A more desirable approach is to apply passive damping technology to reduce the active control burden. Development of the technology to apply this strategy is the objective of the PACOSS (Passive and Active Control OF Space Structures) program. A key element in the PACOSS program is the Representative System Article (RSA). The RSA is a generic paper system that serves as a testbed for damping and controls studies. It also serves as a basis for design of the smaller Dynamic Test Article (DTA), a hardware testbed for the laboratory validation of analysis and design practices developed under PACOSS

    Structure and management issues of the emerging ornamental fish trade in Eritrea

    Following independence from Ethiopia in 1993, Eritrea resumed exploiting Red Sea and Arabian fish species for the ornamental trade in 1995 as a means to earn foreign exchange from sparsely exploited marine resources. This paper describes the findings of research conducted in 1997, in collaboration with the Eritrean Ministry of Fisheries. The capture, transport and export of aquarium fish were reviewed and potential impacts and the status of management were investigated through liaison with stakeholders and researchers. From 1995 to 1997 two companies exported approximately 60,000 fish per year, mainly to the USA, worth US$65,000 (export value). Seventyfive species (from 22 families) were exported. Damselfishes made up two-thirds of total exports but more valuable families (angelfishes and butterflyfishes) were more economically significant. To earn revenue for Eritrea, a 20% export tax was imposed, although this was calculated from declarations by the operators. The emerging nature of the trade allowed detailed monitoring by the Ministry of Fisheries. However, management efforts were constrained by a lack of capacity for enforcement and baseline research. Several potential effects of the trade exist but other, land-based impacts may be more pressing concerns for Eritrea’s reefs. Research priorities for management are discussed as well as the implications of mariculture of Eritrean species by other nations

The flow solver utilizes a pseudocompressibility approach combined with an approximate factorization scheme. This manual describes key operating features to orient new users.
