    Tsongkhapa as Dzokchenpa: Nyingma Discourses and Geluk Sources Despite their frequent depiction as polar opposites, the Nyingma and Geluk tradiitons of Tibetan Buddhism have important and sometimes surprising points of connection. The focus of this article is the Geluk founder Tsongkhapa’s (1357–1419) relation to Nyingma teachers, doctrines, and practices. My more specific concern is to examine a particular, relatively long-standing Nyingma discourse suggesting that Tsongkhapa was a crypto-Dzokchenpa. The main “proof-text” for this claim is The Garland of Supreme Medicinal Nectar, which records questions about Dzokchen posed by Tsongkhapa to the buddha/bodhisattva Vajrapāáč‡i through the medium of his Nyingma teacher Lodrak Namkha Gyaltsen (or Lekyi DorjĂ©, 1326–1401), and the answers conveyed by Lekyi DorjĂ©. The dialogue covers questions about the purity, nature, categories, and potential pitfalls of the practice of the Great Perfection. Here, I (a) outline some Nyingma claims about Tsongkhapa’s enthusiasm for (or even partiality to) Dzokchen and his relation to Padmasambhava, (b) discuss the contents of the Garland of Supreme Medicinal Nectar and two other Lekyi DorjĂ©-related texts, (c) set the Garland and the shorter texts within the context of Tsongkhapa’s overall corpus and projects, (d) reflect on the perspectives of later Gelukpa masters who are taken by Nyingmapas to confirm Tsongkhapa’s partiality to Dzokchen, and (e) offer a concluding assessment of the validity, function, and import of the Nyingma claims to the effect that Tsongkhapa was a crypto-Dzokchenpa, finding the textual evidence to be weak, but the discourse itself to be religiously significant

    The Expanding Social Network of Ionotropic Glutamate Receptors: TARPs and Other Transmembrane Auxiliary Subunits

    Ionotropic glutamate receptors (iGluRs) underlie rapid, excitatory synaptic signaling throughout the CNS. After years of intense research, our picture of iGluRs has evolved from them being companionless in the postsynaptic membrane to them being the hub of dynamic supramolecular signaling complexes, interacting with an ever-expanding litany of other proteins that regulate their trafficking, scaffolding, stability, signaling, and turnover. In particular, the discovery that transmembrane AMPA receptor regulatory proteins (TARPs) are AMPA receptor auxiliary subunits that are critical determinants of their trafficking, gating, and pharmacology has changed the way we think about iGluR function. Recently, a number of novel transmembrane proteins have been uncovered that may also serve as iGluR auxiliary proteins. Here we review pivotal developments in our understanding of the role of TARPs in AMPA receptor trafficking and gating, and provide an overview of how newly discovered transmembrane proteins expand our view of iGluR function in the CNS

    Mapping climate discourse to climate opinion: An approach for augmenting surveys with social media to enhance understandings of climate opinion in the United States

    Surveys are commonly used to quantify public opinions of climate change and to inform sustainability policies. However, conducting large-scale population-based surveys is often a difficult task due to time and resource constraints. This paper outlines a machine learning framework—grounded in statistical learning theory and natural language processing—to augment climate change opinion surveys with social media data. The proposed framework maps social media discourse to climate opinion surveys, allowing for discerning the regionally distinct topics and themes that contribute to climate opinions. The analysis reveals significant regional variation in the emergent social media topics associated with climate opinions. Furthermore, significant correlation is identified between social media discourse and climate attitude. However, the dependencies between topic discussion and climate opinion are not always intuitive and often require augmenting the analysis with a topic’s most frequent n-grams and most representative tweets to effectively interpret the relationship. Finally, the paper concludes with a discussion of how these results can be used in the policy framing process to quickly and effectively understand constituents’ opinions on critical issues.publishedVersio

    An experimental and computational study of tip clearance effects on a transonic turbine stage

    This paper describes an experimental and computational investigation into the influence of tip clearance on the blade tip heat load of a high-pressure (HP) turbine stage. Experiments were performed in the Oxford Rotor facility which is a 1Âœ stage, shroudless, transonic, high pressure turbine. The experiments were conducted at an engine representative Mach number and Reynolds number. Rotating frame instrumentation was used to capture both aerodynamic and heat flux data within the rotor blade row. Two rotor blade tip clearances were tested (1.5% and 1.0% of blade span). The experiments were compared with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) predictions made using a steady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) solver. The experiments and computational predictions were in good agreement. The blade tip heat transfer was observed to increase with reduced tip gap in both the CFD and the experiment. The augmentation of tip heat load at smaller clearances was found to be due to the ingestion of high relative total temperature fluid near the casing, generated through casing shear.This work was sponsored by Rolls-Royce plc and the Isle of Man Government.This is the author accepted manuscript.
