    Interaction of a vortex induced by a rotating cylinder with a plane

    In this article,we study theoretically and numerically the interaction of a vortex induced by a rotating cylinder with a perpendicular plane. We show the existence of weak solutions to the swirling vortex models by using the Hopf extension method, and by an elegant contradiction argument, respectively. We demonstrate numerically that the model could produce phenomena of swirling vortex including boundary layer pumping and two-celled vortex that are observed in potential line vortex interacting with a plane and in a tornado

    Information and drug prices: evidence from the Medicare discount drug card program

    In early 2004, the U.S. Government initiated the Medicare Discount Drug Card Program (MDDCP), which created a market for drug cards that allowed elderly and handicapped subscribers to obtain discounts on their prescription drug purchases. Pharmacy-level prices for many drugs were posted on the program website weekly from May 29, 2004 to December 31, 2005, as the largest undertaking in the history of government-sponsored information release began with the hope of promoting competition by facilitating access to prices. A large panel of pharmacy-level drug price data collected from the Medicare website indicates that there was significant and persistent dispersion in prices across cards throughout the program. Moreover, the time-path of prices was non-monotonic; the prices declined initially when consumers were choosing cards but rose later when subscribers were unable to switch from one card to another. In contrast, contemporaneous control prices from on-line drug retailers, which were unrelated to the program, rose steadily over time, indicating that MDDCP prices evolved in a way different from the general evolution of prices outside the program. In view of the fact that the program rules prevented consumers from changing their cards at will, the evolution of MDDCP prices is consistent with certain models of dynamic price competition with consumer switching costs, such as Klemperer’s (1987a,b).     Seismic Analysis of the Reservoir-Earth Dam-Pore Fluid System Using an Integrated Numerical Approach

    In this paper, an integrated numerical approach is proposed for analyzing the seismic response of the reservoir-earth dam-pore fluid system subjected to earthquake loading. The fluid-mechanical coupling approach is deployed to capture the fluid-solid matrix coupling effects automatically. A hysteretic damping constitutive law is adopted to follow the modulus reduction and damping ratio curves. The Finn-Byrne equation is used to represent the shear-induced volumetric strain behavior of liquefiable materials. The interaction between the reservoir water and the dam boundary is treated as a dynamically updated pressure boundary condition. The deconvolution is accomplished by the equivalent linear program SHAKE. An automatic remeshing algorithm is employed to replace the badly distorted mesh with a new regular mesh whenever needed during the system evolution process. The system integrating these elements is constructed in the explicit finite-difference program FLAC, and applied to analyze the responses of a reservoir dam under seismic loading in both horizontal and vertical directions; the potential liquefied regions, earthquake-induced settlement and lateral spreading predicted by the simulation are presented

    Using the Bollen-Stine bootstrapping method for evaluating approximate fit

    Accepting that a model will not exactly fit any empirical data, global approximate fit indices quantify the degree of misfit. Recent research (Chen et al., 2008) has shown that using fixed conventional cut-points for approximate fit indices can lead to decision errors. Instead of using fixed cut-points for evaluating approximate fit indices, this study focuses on the meaning of approximate fit and introduces a new method to evaluate approximate fit indices. Millsap (2012) introduced a simulation-based method to evaluate approximate fit indices. A limitation of Millsap’s work was that a rather strong assumption of multivariate normality was implied in generating simulation data. In this study, the Bollen-Stine bootstrapping procedure (Bollen & Stine, 1993) is proposed to supplement the former study. When data are non-normal, the conclusions derived from Millsap’s (2012) simulation method and the Bollen-Stine method can differ. Examples are given to illustrate the use of the Bollen-Stine bootstrapping procedure for evaluating RMSEA. Comparisons are made with the simulation method. The results are discussed, and suggestions are given for the use of proposed method

    Cell contraction induces long-ranged stress stiffening in the extracellular matrix

    Animal cells in tissues are supported by biopolymer matrices, which typically exhibit highly nonlinear mechanical properties. While the linear elasticity of the matrix can significantly impact cell mechanics and functionality, it remains largely unknown how cells, in turn, affect the nonlinear mechanics of their surrounding matrix. Here we show that living contractile cells are able to generate a massive stiffness gradient in three distinct 3D extracellular matrix model systems: collagen, fibrin, and Matrigel. We decipher this remarkable behavior by introducing Nonlinear Stress Inference Microscopy (NSIM), a novel technique to infer stress fields in a 3D matrix from nonlinear microrheology measurement with optical tweezers. Using NSIM and simulations, we reveal a long-ranged propagation of cell-generated stresses resulting from local filament buckling. This slow decay of stress gives rise to the large spatial extent of the observed cell-induced matrix stiffness gradient, which could form a mechanism for mechanical communication between cells

    A resorcinarene for inhibition of Aβ fibrillation.

    Amyloid-β peptides (Aβ) fibrillation is the hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, it has been challenging to discover potent agents in order to inhibit Aβ fibrillation. Herein, we demonstrated the effect of resorcinarene on inhibiting Aβ fibrillation in vitro via experimental and computational methods. Aβ were incubated with different concentrations of resorcinarene so as to monitor the kinetics by using thioflavin T binding assay. The results, which were further confirmed by far-UV CD spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy, strongly indicated that the higher concentration of resorcinarene, the more effective the inhibition of Aβ fibrillation. A cytotoxicity study showed that when sea urchin embryos were exposed to the resorcinarene, the majority survived due to the resorcinarene low toxicity. In addition, when the resorcinarene was added, the formation of toxic Aβ 42 species was delayed. Computational studies of Aβ fibrillation, including docking simulations and MD simulations, illustrated that the interaction between inhibitor resorcinarene and Aβ is driven by the non-polar interactions. These studies display a novel strategy for the exploration of promising antiamyloiddogenic agents for AD treatments

    Heteroepitaxy of N-type β-Ga2O3 Thin Films on Sapphire Substrate by Low Pressure Chemical Vapor Deposition

    This paper presents the heteroepitaxial growth of ultrawide bandgap β-Ga2O3 thin films on c-plane sapphire substrates by low pressure chemical vapor deposition. N-type conductivity in silicon (Si)-doped β-Ga2O3 films grown on sapphire substrate is demonstrated. The thin films were synthesized using high purity metallic gallium (Ga) and oxygen (O2) as precursors. The morphology, crystal quality, and properties of the as-grown thin films were characterized and analyzed by field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, electron backscatter diffraction, photoluminescence and optical, photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy, and temperature dependent van der Pauw/Hall measurement. The optical bandgap is ∼4.76 eV, and room temperature electron mobility of 42.35 cm2/V s was measured for a Si-doped heteroepitaxial β-Ga2O3 film with a doping concentration of 1.32 × 1018 cm−3

    Properties of the warm magnetized ISM, as inferred from WSRT polarimetric imaging

    We describe a first attempt to derive properties of the regular and turbulent Galactic magnetic field from multi-frequency polarimetric observations of the diffuse Galactic synchrotron background. A single-cell-size model of the thin Galactic disk is constructed which includes random and regular magnetic fields and thermal and relativistic electrons. The disk is irradiated from behind with a uniform partially polarized background. Radiation from the background and from the thin disk is Faraday rotated and depolarized while propagating through the medium. The model parameters are estimated from a comparison with 350 MHz observations in two regions at intermediate latitudes done with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. We obtain good consistency between the estimates for the random and regular magnetic field strengths and typical scales of structure in the two regions. The regular magnetic field strength found is a few microGauss, and the ratio of random to regular magnetic field strength is 0.7 +/- 0.5, for a typical scale of the random component of 15 +/- 10 pc. Furthermore, the regular magnetic field is directed almost perpendicular to the line of sight. This modeling is a potentially powerful method to estimate the structure of the Galactic magnetic field, especially when more polarimetric observations of the diffuse synchrotron background at intermediate latitudes become available.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, accepted by A&

    Sex differences in the relationship of hip strength and functional performance to chronic ankle instability scores

    BACKGROUND: While decreased hip abductor strength, functional performance, and self-reported instability scores have all been shown in association with CAI, any sex difference in the relationship between these indicators is unclear. This study was to determine whether sex differences are present in the relationship between these indicators in individuals with CAI. METHODS: Thirty-two women and twenty-nine men with unilateral CAI took part. Hip abductor strength and functional performance were respectively assessed using a hand-held dynamometer and the figure-8-hop test. All 61 participants scored the Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT) for self-reported ankle instability. Independent sample t-tests and correlation analysis were conducted. RESULTS: Normalized hip abductor strength and functional performance measures for females were lower than for males. The self-reported ankle instability CAIT score, where higher values represent less instability, was significantly and positively correlated with both normalized hip abductor strength (p = 0.003) and functional performance (p = 0.001) on the affected side in females, but not in males (p = 0.361 and p = 0.192 respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Sex differences were observed in that there were significant relationships between normalized hip abductor strength, functional performance, and CAIT scores in female CAI participants, but not males, suggesting that CAI evaluation and rehabilitation strategies should be sex-specific. HIGHLIGHTS: In females with CAI, hip abductor strength and functional performance showed significant relationships with self-reported instability scores. Correspondingly, in clinical practice with individuals with CAI, evaluation criteria may be formulated according to these observed sex differences. Sex differences should be factored into the evaluation and treatment of CAI individuals. Hip strength assessment should be employed with CAI individuals. Hip strengthening and functional hopping may be recommended for the rehabilitation of CAI, especially in female patients
