Reduction of Coxiella burnetii prevalence by vaccination of goats and sheep, the Netherlands
Recently, the number of human Q fever cases in the Netherlands increased dramatically. In response to this increase, dairy goats and dairy sheep were vaccinated against Coxiella burnetii. All pregnant dairy goats and dairy sheep in herds positive for Q fever were culled. We identified the effect of vaccination on bacterial shedding by small ruminants. On the day of culling, samples of uterine fluid, vaginal mucus, and milk were obtained from 957 pregnant animals in 13 herds. Prevalence and bacterial load were reduced in vaccinated animals compared with unvaccinated animals. These effects were most pronounced in animals during their first pregnancy. Results indicate that vaccination may reduce bacterial load in the environment and human exposure to C. burnetii
Costs of compliance with EU regulations and competitiveness of the EU dairy sector
The introduction of cross-compliance mechanism in the European Union with its 2003 CAPreform might affect the costs of production and thus competitiveness of the EU. Little evidence is available to asses the costs of compliance with regulations and it implication for trade. In this study a farm level competitiveness analysis of the impacts of the Nitrate Directive and the Identification & registration Directive focuses on the dairy sector in Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands and UK (within EU), and the US and New Zealand (outside EU). The findings from this study are integrated into a trade analysis which assesses the impact of compliance costs on competitiveness of the various trading nations in global trade. Representative farm studies were used as a basis for the cost increase calculations. Best-estimates of compliance are used from the existing literature and expert judgements. The negative impact of these measures (for nitrates, and animal identification and registration) on EU imports and exports are less than 3 percent. If a smaller increase in compliance takes place, these already relatively small trade impacts will be further diminished. When the standards for nitrate pollution taken by the US and New Zealand are taken into account along with full compliance assumption in all countries analysed, this would only slightly improve the EU exports. The trade impacts obtained when no changes are assumed to happen in key competitor countries can thus be argued as providing the upper bound of the likely trade impacts
Growth control of GaAs nanowires using pulsed laser deposition with arsenic over pressure
Using pulsed laser ablation with arsenic over pressure, the growth conditions
for GaAs nanowires have been systematically investigated and optimized. Arsenic
over pressure with As molecules was introduced to the system by thermal
decomposition of polycrystalline GaAs to control the stoichiometry and shape of
the nanowires during growth. GaAs nanowires exhibit a variety of geometries
under varying arsenic over pressure, which can be understood by different
growth processes via vapor-liquid-solid mechanism. Single-crystal GaAs
nanowires with uniform diameter, lengths over 20 m, and thin surface oxide
layer were obtained and can potentially be used for further electronic
characterization
Efficient single-photon emission from electrically driven InP quantum dots epitaxially grown on Si(001)
The heteroepitaxy of III-V semiconductors on silicon is a promising approach
for making silicon a photonic platform for on-chip optical interconnects and
quantum optical applications. Monolithic integration of both material systems
is a long-time challenge, since different material properties lead to high
defect densities in the epitaxial layers. In recent years, nanostructures
however have shown to be suitable for successfully realising light emitters on
silicon, taking advantage of their geometry. Facet edges and sidewalls can
minimise or eliminate the formation of dislocations, and due to the reduced
contact area, nanostructures are little affected by dislocation networks. Here
we demonstrate the potential of indium phosphide quantum dots as efficient
light emitters on CMOS-compatible silicon substrates, with luminescence
characteristics comparable to mature devices realised on III-V substrates. For
the first time, electrically driven single-photon emission on silicon is
presented, meeting the wavelength range of silicon avalanche photo diodes'
highest detection efficiency

We consider compactification of M-theory on X7 with betti numbers (b_0, b_1,
b_2, b_3, b_3, b_2, b_1, b_0) and define a generalized mirror symmetry (b_0,
b_1, b_2, b_3) goes to (b_0, b_1, b_2 -rho/2, b_3+rho/2)$ under which rho =
7b_0-5b_1+3b_2 -b_3 changes sign. Generalized self-mirror theories with rho=0
have massless sectors with vanishing trace anomaly (before dualization).

Singular perturbation techniques in the gravitational self-force problem
Much of the progress in the gravitational self-force problem has involved the
use of singular perturbation techniques. Yet the formalism underlying these
techniques is not widely known. I remedy this situation by explicating the
foundations and geometrical structure of singular perturbation theory in
general relativity. Within that context, I sketch precise formulations of the
methods used in the self-force problem: dual expansions (including matched
asymptotic expansions), for which I identify precise matching conditions, one
of which is a weak condition arising only when multiple coordinate systems are
used; multiscale expansions, for which I provide a covariant formulation; and a
self-consistent expansion with a fixed worldline, for which I provide a precise
statement of the exact problem and its approximation. I then present a detailed
analysis of matched asymptotic expansions as they have been utilized in
calculating the self-force. Typically, the method has relied on a weak matching
condition, which I show cannot determine a unique equation of motion. I
formulate a refined condition that is sufficient to determine such an equation.
However, I conclude that the method yields significantly weaker results than do

Cross-Comparison of Climate Change adaptation Strategies Across Large River Basins in Europe, Africa and Asia
A cross-comparison of climate change adaptation strategies across regions was performed, considering six large river basins as case study areas. Three of the basins, namely the Elbe, Guadiana, and Rhine, are located in Europe, the Nile Equatorial Lakes region and the Orange basin are in Africa, and the Amudarya basin is in Central Asia. The evaluation was based mainly on the opinions of policy makers and water management experts in the river basins. The adaptation strategies were evaluated considering the following issues: expected climate change, expected climate change impacts, drivers for development of adaptation strategy, barriers for adaptation, state of the implementation of a range of water management measures, and status of adaptation strategy implementation. The analysis of responses and cross-comparison were performed with rating the responses where possible. According to the expert opinions, there is an understanding in all six regions that climate change is happening. Different climate change impacts are expected in the basins, whereas decreasing annual water availability, and increasing frequency and intensity of droughts (and to a lesser extent floods) are expected in all of them. According to the responses, the two most important drivers for development of adaptation strategy are: climate-related disasters, and national and international policies. The following most important barriers for adaptation to climate change were identified by responders: spatial and temporal uncertainties in climate projections, lack of adequate financial resources, and lack of horizontal cooperation. The evaluated water resources management measures are on a relatively high level in the Elbe and Rhine basins, followed by the Orange and Guadiana. It is lower in the Amudarya basin, and the lowest in the NEL region, where many measures are only at the planning stage. Moduli backreaction and supersymmetry breaking in string-inspired inflation models
We emphasize the importance of effects from heavy fields on supergravity
models of inflation. We study, in particular, the backreaction of stabilizer
fields and geometric moduli in the presence of supersymmetry breaking. Many
effects do not decouple even if those fields are much heavier than the inflaton
field. We apply our results to successful models of Starobinsky-like inflation
and natural inflation. In most scenarios producing a plateau potential it
proves difficult to retain the flatness of the potential after backreactions
are taken into account. Some of them are incompatible with non-perturbative
moduli stabilization. In natural inflation there exist a number of models which
are not constrained by backreactions at all. In those cases the correction
terms from heavy fields have the same inflaton-dependence as the uncorrected
potential, so that inflation may be possible even for very large gravitino
